Chapter 30: The Holiday in Progress and Speculations about Magic
Xavier opened his eyes in the stairwell.
The night was deep outside the window, and the living room was quiet, with only the occasional cooing sound coming through the door.
In the next room, Beth and Darren's voices could be faintly heard.
He turned over and looked at the small window beside him. Moonlight streamed through the glass and fell on his pillow.
"If lifespans really do last for hundreds of years..."
He muttered to himself, "By then, the other versions of myself from other worlds wouldn't exist anymore."
Thinking about this, he suddenly felt a little dazed.
If I am still alive, then my counterparts in other worlds are dead.
And then what? Does the shared space still exist? Will those memories, those forces, fade away?
he does not know.
Perhaps we'll never know.
Xavier closed his eyes and pulled the blanket tighter around himself.
In the next room, Beth was still whispering something, and Darren responded in a low voice.
These sounds made him feel at ease.
-
The holiday went by quickly.
Even while at home, Xavier continued to exercise every day.
During the day, she tried to help her mother cook and researched recipes, and of course, she also prepared recipes for the house-elves at Hogwarts.
In the evenings, he would read books in his room or watch movies with his parents.
Darren took him to watch shows like Terminator 2 and The Silence of the Lambs, while Beth preferred watching Sherlock Holmes episodes broadcast on ITV.
It's just a bit of a pity that he can't practice spells.
First, the space is too small; second, if the spell goes wrong—for example, accidentally turning Beth's sofa into a pig—then the situation would be difficult to clean up.
Moreover, the Ministry of Magic has a track record and can detect spell fluctuations, and it is illegal for minors to use magic outside of school.
While traces of magic are generally unreliable for children from wizarding families, Xavier is a Muggle, and if any traces of spellcasting are detected, things could get very complicated.
"I need a way to train and improve myself without using a wand or casting spells, while still consuming magic power."
Xavier sat in the stairwell, staring at the star stickers on the ceiling.
His thoughts gradually became clearer.
Wizards are much stronger than ordinary people, and his physical abilities far surpass those of wizards of the same age.
But physical strength doesn't guarantee protection in the magical world—no amount of strength can withstand a "stun" spell from a dark wizard casting a curse.
Xavier had an idea—could magic strengthen the body?
It's not the kind of subtle, gradual influence, but rather a conscious effort to train.
Magic is a form of energy that is closely linked to the wizard's body and mind.
Since magic can be released through a wand, is it possible to let magic circulate within the body to directly nourish it?
This idea came from the internal energy circulation method of Rainbow Cat Deer Selection, where internal energy can circulate in the meridians to strengthen the muscles, bones and internal organs of martial artists.
Although magic is different from internal energy, perhaps the principles are the same?
One evening, Xavier sat on the edge of his bed, closed his eyes, and tried to feel the magic within him.
After a long time, just when he was about to give up, Xavier began to have some ideas—
It was a warm feeling, like a quiet flame hidden inside the body.
Normally it lies dormant within the body, only to be "activated" when a spell is cast, flowing to the wand and being consumed.
Xavier tried to "push" the flame with his mind, making it move slowly along his arm.
At first it was very slow, like pushing a huge rock.
But the magic seemed to "recognize" his body—after all, it had lived there for eleven years.
Slowly, it seemed to begin to flow.
One lap, two laps, three laps...
With each cycle, he felt his body warmer. It wasn't the uncomfortable heat of a fever, but rather the comfort of soaking in warm water.
Xavier opened his eyes and looked at his hands in surprise.
"Really?"
He tried a few more times to confirm that it wasn't his imagination.
The magic can indeed circulate within the body, and this circulation seems to make the body more "transparent"—like lubricating a machine.
"Magic enhancement - feasible." He wrote these words in his notebook and then drew a big circle around them.
Of course, this is just the beginning.
How effective it will be, whether there are any side effects, and how long it will take to see noticeable changes—these are all unknowns.
He plans to read more related books after returning to school.
He believed that such obvious things must have been recorded by the wizards who were willing to experiment on their own bodies.
-
During his vacation, Xavier did one more thing.
He often went to the library to read books, focusing on the chapters about "anti-witch campaigns".
The book mentions that medieval witch hunts lasted for hundreds of years.
At Hogwarts, some young wizards have said that most of those burned to death were innocent people, and some wizards even took pleasure in being burned.
However, it cannot be denied that some genuine wizards were also harmed.
Besides the scarcity and lack of secrecy among wizards, there may be another reason: some Muggle nobles possess the means to combat wizards.
These methods are not magic—at least not magic in the traditional sense.
Xavier found some of the European history books a headache, and many more were vague, merely mentioned in passing.
But Xavier noticed a detail: the ancestors of many noble families were descendants of famous knights.
Knights of the Round Table.
Merlin was a wizard, but he was also King Arthur's mentor. He taught King Arthur not only magic, but also combat skills and the art of governing.
The Knights of the Round Table displayed superhuman strength and endurance. Perhaps this was not simply the result of training, but a power that originated from magic but manifested in a different form.
"Knights and wizards may walk two different paths."
Xavier drew a sketch in his notebook.
One path is that of the wizard—using wands and spells to project magic and alter the outside world.
The other path is that of a knight—by forging their body and internalizing a certain energy to strengthen themselves.
These two paths are not mutually exclusive.
Merlin is both a wizard and a mentor to knights.
He understands magic, and he understands combat.
"Is it possible for a person to walk on two roads at the same time?"
Xavier wrote down this question.
He didn't have an answer, but he felt it was worth a try.
-
He then thought of spellcasters in other cultures.
Shamans enter a trance state through drumbeats and dance, communicating with the spirits of nature. Their spells do not have standard incantation syllables, yet they are equally effective.
African tribal shamans rarely use wands or chant Latin spells, but they can communicate with the spirits of their ancestors, cast curses, and heal diseases.
Their power system differs from that of European wizards, but no one can deny that it is magic.
They even have their own magic academy—Vagad—which is one of the eleven known magic schools in the world and the largest of them all.
I've heard that their students are proficient in staffless spellcasting and astronomy, alchemy, and self-transformation—the Animagus.
The wand was invented in Europe, and African sorcerers did not use it widely until the 20th century. In Waggadu, many spells are cast by using fingers or gestures.
Different paths lead to the same destination.
Xavier wrote,
"Therefore, wands and spells are merely tools, not the essence of magic. The essence of magic is the combination of will and energy."
If this assumption holds true, then even without a wand and without the ability to cast spells, he should still be able to use magic in other ways.
These ideas are rough and immature, but at least they represent a direction.
