I revived the Demonic Sect in North America
Chapter 12 I'll come and satisfy you right now
The cafeteria at River Valley High School was spacious and noisy, filled with the mixed smells of fried food, cooked vegetables, and disinfectant.
The four people lined up in the queue like a human centipede.
Today's lunch served in the cafeteria is a standard set meal.
A chicken breast cutlet, fried to a golden brown and coated in a thick layer of breadcrumbs, is served with a spoonful of bland green peas and corn kernels, a mound of suspiciously colored mashed potatoes, and a hard, round dinner bread.
The beverage is low-fat milk or apple juice in a carton.
When it was Li Ang and Bruce's turn, they skillfully affixed their student cards to the card reader.
The machine emits an electronic beep:
"Beep—Free lunch verified."
The so-called free lunch is a campus welfare policy promoted by the U.S. federal government.
It provides nutritionally adequate basic meals specifically for students from families with incomes below the federal poverty line.
Bruce received his free lunch card upon enrollment.
Li Ang, on the other hand, successfully applied for the grant a few months ago after going through layers of review by community social workers and the school committee, using his sister Fiona's income certificate and medical bills.
Liu Yue, who was following behind the two, glanced at them curiously and said to the cafeteria lady:
"Does the cafeteria only offer one type of set meal?"
The Black woman serving food glanced at Liu Yue sideways:
"Yes, little girl, there's only one set meal, and all the dishes are the same. If you want to order something extra, you have to go outside the school."
Liu Yue nodded and took the tray, then took out her new student card and stuck it on the card reader, just like Liu Yue had done.
Because she is not a recipient of minimum living allowance, she was charged even though she ordered the same set meal.
The machine emits different deduction notification sounds:
"Beep—$2.75 consumed."
It was Zhang Han's turn to get his food.
Without even glancing at the standard meals, he pointed directly to the individually packaged Caesar salad bowl in the refrigerated display case and said imperiously:
Give me this!
After swiping the card, the machine will give a voice prompt:
"Beep—$4.5 consumed."
This salad bowl is the most expensive item in the cafeteria.
Furthermore, according to regulations, students who are eligible for free lunches are not allowed to purchase them.
The salad bowl contained lettuce, purple cabbage, pieces of roasted chicken, bacon bits, and Parmesan cheese, all mixed together in a clear plastic bowl.
Zhang Han picked up the bowl of exquisite salad and walked past Li Ang and Bruce.
His gaze swept quickly over the plates of Li Ang and the other person.
The contempt that Liu Yue had just suppressed resurfaced at the corner of his mouth.
The four of them found a table against the wall and sat down.
The atmosphere was somewhat awkward.
Liu Yue tried each item with great interest, but only dabbled in them.
Then she stopped, staring intently at Li Ang's handsome face, seemingly more attracted to him.
Bruce, however, was most interested in the huge fried chicken cutlet on the plate, so he grabbed it with his hands and wolfed it down.
Zhang Han, on the other hand, acted like an idiot, taking small bites of salad with feigned modesty, thinking he was being elegant, as if he were performing some kind of ritual.
Li Ang took a few bites of mashed potatoes, then casually turned to Bruce and asked:
"By the way, Bruce, you mentioned before that you have relatives living near the Jerome Avenue subway station? I have a small social survey assignment that I'd like to do, and I'd like to find out about the safety situation in that area. Could you ask around for me?"
Bruce perked up immediately upon hearing this.
He first swallowed the chicken in his mouth with difficulty, then took a sip of milk to smooth it out, and said with great interest:
"Oh! You mean the Jerome Avenue subway station in Morris Heights? Well, you've come to the right person. That awful place is a hot topic among New York gangsters lately!"
At this point, Bruce glanced smugly at Liu Yue and Zhang Han, lowered his voice, and said mysteriously:
"You know, Li Ang, my cousin has always followed the Blood Gang's boss, Daddy, and he's got some connections in Morris Heights. He's talked to me a lot about the news in this area lately."
Liu Yue's eyes suddenly lit up:
"What?! The New York mob? Bloody boss Daddy? Wow! Is this for real?! So cool! Bruce, stop keeping us in suspense and tell us!"
When Zhang Han saw Liu Yue's enthusiastic expression, he stopped digging into his salad with his fork and frowned.
He wanted to persuade Liu Yue not to get involved in these low-level topics, but he was afraid that if he spoke up, Liu Yue would criticize him and he would lose face again.
He hesitated, looking as if he wanted to say something but stopped, his face showing a constipated expression.
Bruce became even more smug upon seeing this and chuckled:
"Hehe, don't rush, little girl, I'll satisfy you right away."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Han's face immediately darkened, looking as if his mother had died.
However, faced with Bruce's mountain-like physique, Zhang Han didn't dare to utter a sound.
I rationally chose to silently sulk.
Liu Yue wasn't angry, but she gave Bruce a sharp, indignant shove.
Li Ang, somewhat anxious, hurriedly said:
"This is very important to me, don't joke around, Bruce."
Seeing Leon's serious expression, Bruce raised his hands in surrender and said:
"My bad, I'm sorry, Li Ang, I shouldn't have joked about your girlfriend."
Zhang Han's face darkened further, his eyes practically shooting out knives as if he wanted to kill Bruce.
Liu Yue was both embarrassed and delighted this time.
She didn't argue, but kept stealing glances at Li Ang, finding him more and more handsome the more she looked at him.
Li Ang was left speechless, both amused and exasperated.
Is that the key point? He wants to know the specific situation around the subway station.
This could be a matter of life and death for Officer Karen.
Bruce coughed and continued:
"That's how it is. There used to be a mix of gangs in that area. The biggest and most ruthless was the Latino Kings, those Latino guys. They had the biggest territory and the strictest rules. Next were my cousin's Bloods and their arch-rivals, the Cripples."
However, the larger groups were actually vying for smaller quantities of goods. These were mostly local thugs, like the Motley Park kids—small in number, but familiar with the area and not to be trifled with.
Li Ang keenly caught the key point in Bruce's words and quickly asked:
"You mean before? What, has anything new changed?"
"Hehehe, Li Ang, you truly live up to my reputation as a man Bruce acknowledges. You immediately grasped the crux of the problem."
Bruce stretched out his greasy hand, gave Leon a thumbs-up, and continued:
"My cousin told me that things have been tense around the Jerome Avenue subway station lately. Just last week, I don't know if it was some resident or a rival gang causing trouble, but they actually threw Molotov cocktails at the borough office building to protest the poor security."
Upon hearing this, everyone was immediately taken aback.
Liu Yue's eyes lit up with delight, and she exclaimed:
"Wow! Molotov cocktails! So cool! No wonder this is the free America, it's like something out of a Hollywood movie! We Dongda students are too weak, no one would dare to do something like this!"
Li Ang glanced at Liu Yue without making a sound, almost thinking that Liu Yue was impersonating someone to criticize America.
However, Liu Yue's expression was very excited, and she did not seem to be faking it at all.
Li Ang was somewhat surprised, witnessing once again the world's biodiversity.
It turns out there really are oddballs in this world who envy the freedom and chaos of other countries, and even hope that their own country will have some trouble to add to their excitement.
Is this what a rich girl looks like? Interesting.
Li Ang tried to steer the conversation back on track:
"What happened next? The police must have taken some action, right?"
