Chapter 49 Mission Hall
Chapter 49 Mission Hall
At 9:00 AM the next day, in the mission hall of the Imperial Academy in the capital.
This place is located in the east campus of the college. It's a standalone three-story building with a square exterior and no fancy decorations. But once you go inside, it's noisy and chaotic.
The entire wall in front of the lobby is a holographic screen, divided into five sections from left to right, corresponding to Class D, Class C, Class B, Class A, and Class C, respectively.
Level 1 and Level S missions. The mission entries on the screen refresh every minute. When a new mission pops up, it will flash green. Missions that have been stolen will flash red and then disappear.
To the right of the S-rank quests, there's a smaller gray area with two or three quests permanently displayed; those are SS-rank quests. Occasionally, SSR-rank quests will appear, but those usually require a mentor to lead the team, and ordinary students don't even have the opportunity to see them.
The hall was more crowded than a vegetable market.
The younger students huddled around the D and C level blocks, chattering excitedly as they stared at the task entries on the screen. The older students were scattered around the B and A level blocks, some alone, some in small groups, their expressions much more composed than the younger students.
There were the fewest people in front of the S-level block, but the few standing there all had different auras.
When Su Qianxue and Murong Hui entered the hall, the first thing they noticed was not the mission screen, but the ridiculously lively scene in the center of the hall.
"Come on, we're one short! We need an earth-type tank for a B-grade spirit mine clearing mission! Do you have a tank? Shield warriors preferred, those with taunt skills are a plus!"
A bald, burly man stood in the central open space, shouting at the top of his lungs. He held up a sign with the words "Grade B Spirit Ore - Team Recruitment - Earth Element Tank in Urgent Need" scrawled on it. Below it was a simple line drawing of a shield, the drawing of which was appalling.
Next to him, another older boy in a floral shirt was also recruiting: "Super experts are taking A-level missions! 1000 spirit stones per person, we'll start when we're full! Registration closes in ten minutes! Only two spots left!"
As he spoke, he counted the people queuing behind him on his fingers.
The four people in line looked at each other, their faces clearly saying, "Is this person reliable?"
Even more outrageous was a girl with a ponytail in the corner, hugging a pink plush cushion, with a handwritten sign in front of her that read, "Any handsome guys willing to help me with tasks? I can provide emotional value. Rank B or higher is acceptable. Free handmade cookies included."
.
Below the sign was a plate of beautifully packaged cookies, tied with a bow.
There were quite a few onlookers, but not many people spoke to her. However, three boys were squatting nearby eating her cookies, discussing whether they were bought.
Su Qianxue glanced at the chaos, but didn't stop walking. She walked straight through the crowd towards the A-level and S-level blocks.
Murong Hui followed behind, muttering to herself, "The academy's mission hall looks just like a job fair."
"It's like this every year," a senior girl passing by remarked. "It gets even more outrageous at the end of the month when everyone's rushing to get credits; some people even set up stalls here selling mission guides."
The two walked to the front of the S-level area. It was much quieter here, with only a few people standing in front of the screens watching.
Su Qianxue's gaze swept back and forth between A-level and S-level.
She had already reviewed all the A-level mission entries last night. Spirit ore anomalies, escorting medicinal herbs, and exploring secret realms—the highest rewards were only 600 academic points plus some spirit stones and resources.
S-level is different. Each one starts at two thousand credits.
But the difficulty of S-level is undeniable.
The disappearance of Cangyun City and the abandoned fortress on the southern border—neither of these are things a freshman should be dealing with.
Her Light-based skills are too immature.
The Blade of Light, Healing Light, and Shield of Light are just taking shape, and Judgment of Light is still not accurate enough. Yesterday's sparring session with Murong Hui proved this point: insufficient melee attack power and inadequate ranged accuracy.
I'm not entirely confident about getting an S-class rating.
If you get an A grade, the reward isn't good enough.
Just as I was hesitating, someone patted me on the back.
"Su Qianxue".
Murong Hui had returned sometime earlier after completing the formalities, and now she had a bronze mission token in her hand.
"Yes, you're here. Have you chosen your mission?"
Murong Hui waved the mission board: "I've made my choice. S-rank. Do you want to join me? Splitting the rewards between us is better than you trying to get an A-rank by yourself."
"What mission?"
Murong Hui flipped the quest card over, and the text on it surfaced under the influence of spiritual power:
[S-Rank Mission - Number 0372]
[Mission Description: In the abandoned fortress area on the southern border of the Dragonrise Empire, Imperial scouts have reported discovering energy reactions resembling ancient ruins. You are required to proceed to confirm the nature of the energy source, complete preliminary exploration, and bring back relevant intelligence.]
[Danger Level: S. Possible encounter with Tier 7 or higher dragon-type beasts.]
[Reward: 3000 academic credits + 200 military merit points in the capital.]
Su Qianxue finished reading.
Three thousand academic credits and two hundred merit points. This reward is indeed generous.
"Judging from the reward, it's going to be quite difficult." Murong Hui put away the mission token. "Even senior students might not dare to take it."
"But if we go together, you're level six, I'm level six, and your cat is level seven (Emperor level). Together we can handle a level seven beast without much trouble."
Su Qianxue didn't agree immediately, but went through the risk assessment in her mind.
The southern border, far from the capital, has no reinforcements nearby. The abandoned fortress means the terrain is unknown and there may be traps. She would struggle to fight level 7 and above beasts alone, but with Murong Hui and Yi Chen by her side, they could manage.
As for other unexpected events—her past life experience told her that the risks of S-rank missions were never those written in the mission description, but rather those not written in it.
But she needs academic credits, and she also needs practical experience.
"Okay." Su Qianxue nodded.
"Shall we go? Teleport there now?" Murong Hui raised an eyebrow.
"it is good."
The two turned and walked deeper into the hall.
The mission hall has a teleportation array on its basement level. After paying a teleportation fee, you can directly access teleportation nodes throughout the Empire. There is one on the southern border.
The two figures disappeared at the entrance of the passage.
No one in the hall paid any attention to this scene. S-rank missions are accepted every day, and every day people return empty-handed.
But there was one pair of eyes that never left Su Qianxue.
In the corner, a young man in an ordinary student uniform lowered his head and pressed the communication symbol on the inside of his sleeve three times.
The message has been sent.
The message contained only one line: Su Qianxue, destination: southern border of the Dragon Empire.
The Royal Family Residence.
The communication talisman beeped once in the study.
Wang Bo put down his teacup, took out the communication talisman, and glanced at it.
He had no expression at all.
.
He simply raised two fingers of his right hand.
The attendant standing at the door of the study bowed and withdrew.
No words are needed.
This matter had been planned long ago. The revenge for the loss of his son had been brewing ever since the night he flew away from the academy on his black-scaled fire dragon.
They can't make a move at the Royal Academy, and they can't make a move in the capital city.
But the southern border?
That desolate, abandoned fortress area, a godforsaken place, where anyone who died would have no way of finding out the cause of death.
