Qin Dynasty: Ying Zheng is my brother, I am the Bad Commander

Chapter 15, Questioning the Heart in Ghost Prison

"Ninth Young Master, the two princes imprisoned here are the Prince of Anping and the Prince of Longquan, who were responsible for escorting the military supplies," Zhang Liang introduced in a low voice. "Since the incident, the King was furious and imprisoned the two of them, but because of their status as members of the royal family, the jailers dare not make things too difficult for them."

Han Fei nodded, tilted his head back and took a swig of wine: "Let's go see my two unfortunate uncles."

Deep inside the prison cell.

In the two reasonably well-decorated cells, Anping Jun and Longquan Jun were imprisoned respectively.

Anping Jun was a thin, timid, and cowardly middle-aged man who was huddled in the corner, trembling and muttering to himself.

Lord Longquan, a burly man with a fierce face and a volatile temper, was shouting at the prison door, "Insolence! I am a prince! I am the king's own brother! How dare you lock me up here! Let me out! I want to see my brother!"

Han Fei walked up to the prison door of Lord Longquan and waved with a smile: "Uncle, stop shouting. No one will care if you shout until your voice is hoarse. Here, your nephew has brought you some good wine."

Lord Longquan was taken aback when he saw Han Fei, then roared, "Han Fei? What are you doing here? Did you come to laugh at me?"

"Oh, Uncle Wang, you're too kind." Han Fei gestured for the jailer to open the cell door, went inside, and placed the wine pot on the table. "I've taken over the case of the ghost soldiers robbing the soldiers' pay, and I've come specifically to ask you two uncles about the situation back then. After all, this is a matter of life and death for you two uncles."

Upon hearing the words "life and fortune," Anping Jun from the next cell suddenly lunged at the bars, his voice trembling as he cried out, "Fei'er! Fei'er, you must save Uncle Wang! There really is a ghost! There really is a ghost!"

Han Fei turned around, looked at Lord Anping, and a glint of shrewdness flashed in his eyes: "Oh? Lord Anping, Uncle, you said there's something fishy going on? What exactly is going on?"

Anping Jun swallowed hard, his eyes wide with terror as he recalled, "That night... it was raining heavily... we camped in Duanlong Valley... suddenly... suddenly a gust of cold wind blew by... and those ghost soldiers... those souls of Zheng crawled out from the ground! They were impervious to swords and spears... our soldiers could cut them as if they were hitting stone... and then... and then that 100,000 taels of gold... right before everyone's eyes... turned to ashes! Vanished!"

"Fei'er! That's divine retribution! The spirits of the dead from Zheng have returned to claim our lives! We don't want to die!"

Lord Longquan also stopped his clamor, his face pale as he echoed, "That's right! They are ghost soldiers! I saw it with my own eyes! They are simply beyond human resistance!"

Han Fei listened quietly, a faint smile always on his lips.

After the two finished speaking, he slowly poured himself a glass of wine and took a small sip.

"My two uncles, since it is a ghost soldier seeking a life, there is something I do not understand."

Han Fei put down his wine cup, his gaze instantly turning sharp as a knife, piercing straight into the hearts of the two men.

"Since those ghost soldiers hated Korea so much that they slaughtered all the escorting soldiers, why did they spare the two royal uncles who were not only the commander but also members of the Korean royal family?"

Anping Jun and Longquan Jun were shocked, looked at each other, and stammered, unable to say a word.

"This...this might be...maybe the ghost soldiers just didn't have time yet..." Anping stammered in his explanation.

"Not enough time yet?" Han Fei sneered. "They killed all the guards, stole all the gold, but left only the two most valuable targets? These ghost soldiers really know how to 'respect the old and care for the young'."

Han Fei stood up and slowly paced around the prison.

"The talk of ghosts and gods is nothing but empty talk. But the disappearance of 100,000 taels of gold is a real fact. My father has given me ten days to solve the case. If I fail, I will certainly be punished, but my two uncles are the culprits behind the loss of military funds..."

Han Fei stopped, turned around and looked at the two of them, making a throat-slitting gesture.

"I'm afraid I can't escape death."

"Moreover, he will bear the infamy of 'embezzling military funds,' leaving a lasting stain on his reputation."

Lord Longquan slammed his fist on the table: "Han Fei! Stop spreading these alarmist rumors! We are royalty! My brother won't kill us!"

"Father may be reluctant, but... some people may not want you to live," Han Fei said pointedly. "Those five judges who died tragically are the best example. Do you two uncles really think that as long as you insist it was ghost soldiers robbing the supplies, you can rest easy?"

"If the real mastermind is trying to cover up the murders and turn this case into a closed one, do you two uncles think you're safe in jail?"

These words were like a bucket of ice water, poured hard over their heads.

Anping-kun's legs went weak, and he collapsed to the ground: "Then... what should we do?"

Han Fei sat back down at the table, a bright smile on his face. "It's simple. Tell me the truth. That night, besides the so-called 'ghost soldiers,' what else was unusual? Or rather... who suggested you take the path through Broken Dragon Valley?"

Anping Jun and Longquan Jun exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with struggle and fear.

They were afraid of the mastermind behind it all, but Han Fei's words made them feel an imminent threat of death.

"Yes...yes..." Anping-kun was about to speak.

Longquanjun glared at him sharply, stopping him: "Shut up! Do you want to die?"

Longquanjun turned to Han Fei, gritting his teeth, and said, "Han Fei, we're telling the truth! It's the ghost soldiers robbing our pay! If you don't believe me, go ahead and investigate! Don't try to get anything else out of us!"

Han Fei, seeing Longquan Jun's fierce but cowardly demeanor, had already made up his mind.

These two people, one cowardly as a mouse, the other seemingly tough but actually foolish.

They clearly knew something, or were being threatened by someone.

"Alright, since you two uncles insist that it's the work of ghosts and spirits, then I won't force you." Han Fei stood up, patted his sleeves, and said, "However, I have a few words for you two uncles."

"Humans are sometimes more terrifying than ghosts. And the only way to survive in the hands of ghosts is to become more evil than ghosts, or... find someone who can catch ghosts."

After saying this, Han Fei stopped and turned to walk out of the prison.

"Zhang Liang, let's go."

After walking some distance, Zhang Liang asked in a low voice, "Brother Han, they're clearly hiding something. Why not continue the interrogation?"

Han Fei shook the wine pot and laughed, "Zifang, interrogation is like fishing. The bait has been cast, so you have to give the fish some time to bite. If you push too hard, the line will snap."

"And..." Han Fei glanced back at the gloomy cell, "I've already gotten the answer I wanted."

"Oh?" Zhang Liang asked, puzzled.

"Although they didn't say it explicitly, their fear betrayed them." Han Fei's eyes gleamed with wisdom. "They weren't afraid of ghosts, but of people. This means that the ghost soldiers' robbery of the supplies was indeed a human conspiracy! As long as it's human, it will always leave flaws."

"Next, let's go check out Dragon Severing Valley. I want to see just who these 'ghost soldiers' really are!"
