Mr. Death in the Steam World
Chapter 24 A Night of Venting and Slaughter
Not far from the rose garden, behind a small hill, mist suddenly appeared, and the group tumbled out.
"Cough cough..." The Cheshire Cat looked at his hands, his face extremely pale. "My powers have been shut down, and I can no longer use spatial teleportation."
Having said that, it felt its blood rush to its head and vomited a stream of blood.
The transmission was forcibly interrupted during the process, causing considerable damage to its internal organs.
The White Rabbit bent down and carried the Cheshire Cat on its shoulder, looking somewhat dazed.
"No, how could that be? The hat, the hat..."
The Mad Hatter's betrayal hit him harder than anyone imagined.
"Never mind, Rabbit, you know that guy in the hat has always..."
"We're brothers!"
The white rabbit turned to glare at the Cheshire Cat on its shoulder, but seeing the blood spilling from the cat's mouth, it could no longer utter a single word.
He covered his face, sat down heavily on the ground, and began to sob softly, creating an extremely oppressive atmosphere.
Phils wanted to say something comforting, but didn't know what to say, so she looked to Moen for help.
"What's the use of crying?" Moen said bluntly.
"We're not far from where the poker gang just left us, so the risk of being found is extremely high."
"By the time you finish crying, the Mad Hatter will probably have scattered our ashes."
"If there's anything you can't figure out, let's go beat that traitor to a pulp together. You can slap him while you ask him questions; wouldn't that be more satisfying than you crying and sobbing like this?"
His words were unpleasant to hear, and Phils was getting anxious, tugging at Moen's clothes, but Moen had no intention of stopping.
Although he only spent a dozen or so hours with the White Rabbit, he knew that the White Rabbit would definitely listen to him.
After hearing Moen's words, White Rabbit's shoulders trembled violently. He slowly lowered his hand, revealing his red-rimmed eyes.
"You're right, what's the point of crying?"
Seeing the Cheshire Cat's approving look, he quickly composed himself and returned to normal.
"Thanks, kid. Come with me. I know a place... that traitor and the soldiers shouldn't be able to find it."
......
The pocket watch in the sky was still ticking, with only 24 hours left before Moen and Phils were banished.
Four people—or rather, two people, a rabbit, and a cat—hurriedly made their way along the edge of the rose garden before nightfall.
Along the way, they occasionally heard the shouts of the playing card soldiers, but thanks to the soldiers' loud shouts, they were able to find ways to avoid them from a distance.
Finally, the white rabbit stopped in front of a mountain wall covered with vines.
"Phew, thankfully this place is still here."
He parted the vines, revealing a low opening, just large enough for one person to bend down and enter.
"This is it, come in with me."
Moen squeezed in sideways, with Phils following closely behind.
The cave was small, with some dry grass and a few stone slabs on the ground. In the corner were several rusted iron cans, probably grain storage containers left over from many years ago.
The white rabbit gently placed the already sleeping Cheshire Cat on the haystack.
"When the three of us first entered the dream world, we spent our first night here. The Queen probably doesn't know about this place."
"That crazy guy would never guess that we had the guts to hide here, after all, it's not far from the Castle of Hearts."
As they talked, the moonlight climbed onto the treetops, and the night in the fairyland completely descended.
Now that the Cheshire Cat, the manager of Wonderland Night, has fallen asleep, the nightmare monsters from the outside world can only be dealt with by the White Rabbit, Moen, and Phil...
"Phils?"
Moen turned around, but only heard a steady snoring sound.
He awoke as if from a dream; he was a dead man and didn't need sleep, but Phils had genuinely endured a full day and night through sheer willpower.
Falling into the mirror world, meeting the White Rabbit, walking at night, discussing at a tea party, the Mad Hatter's betrayal...
So much happened in that day and night.
He looked at Phils's tired sleeping face and, to be honest, her sleeping posture was very unladylike, especially with the sound of her snoring.
But seeing the dark circles under her eyes, Mo En felt a lump in his throat.
If he were stronger, Phils wouldn't have had to go through all this.
Well, the two of us, White Rabbit and I, are enough to keep watch. Let her sleep a little longer.
A blue light quietly shone in his hand.
He transferred most of the "Vibrant Fragrance" effect, which had been working silently all along, to Phils, hoping she could recover quickly.
Seeing that Phils's brows were gradually relaxing, he took a deep breath and slowly walked out of the cave. The white rabbit called out to him in surprise.
"Hey kid, what are you doing...?"
"Keeping watch, and letting off some steam at the same time."
Seeing that Moen's expression was not quite right, White Rabbit remained silent for a few seconds, then walked out with him.
"That's fine, keeping it bottled up isn't a solution."
"Those playing card soldiers don't come out at night, and that traitor never goes out at night either. I'm not in a good mood either, so why don't we go together?"
Moen nodded silently.
The two stepped out of the cave. A light drizzle began to fall outside. Moen looked up, and raindrops pattered on his face. He couldn't help but clench his fists.
He was still too weak to cope with the sudden changes.
He recalled the time when he faced the Flower of the Other Shore, how the Flower of the Other Shore easily took Clara away, and how he was powerless to stop it.
If he were strong, he could blow the head off the Flower of the Other Shore with a single shot, sparing Clara from suffering.
If he is strong enough, he can fight his way into the Castle of Hearts without making everyone wait in this cramped cave.
He wants to become stronger, strong enough to handle any unexpected events and to achieve anything he desires.
The white rabbit seemed to sense his worries and came over to pat him on the shoulder.
"What's wrong, kid? Didn't you tell me during the day that 'crying is useless'? How come you're acting like this now?"
"Mr. White Rabbit, I am still too weak."
Moen didn't explain the context of his statement, so White Rabbit didn't quite understand it.
But it didn't say much, only pointing to the Nightmare Cards active in the distance.
"I don't know why you think that way. You're still young and have endless possibilities."
"However, let me tell you, if you feel weak, you can go and bully those who are weaker than you."
"What kind of robber logic is this?" Moen couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"Thank you, Mr. White Rabbit." He glanced at the swarm of Nightmare cards and narrowed his eyes. "Tonight, I might go a little crazy."
The white rabbit smiled and nodded.
The Nightmare Card slowly approached them, concentrating its mind to prepare for battle. Unexpectedly, Moen actually charged into the card pile with a revolver.
This caught him off guard, and just as he was about to go to provide support, a burst of gunfire suddenly rang out.
Amidst the tattered card fragments, before the White Rabbit even arrived, Moen had already charged towards another pile.
Relying on the "war to sustain war" he had acquired the previous night, his bullets seemed inexhaustible, and the gunfire was almost constant.
White Rabbit's eyelids twitched wildly. If they continued killing like this, they would probably be exposed even if they weren't.
Left with no other choice, it chanted a spell and set up a simple magic circle to isolate the surrounding area from the outside world.
"You call this weakness?" he muttered to himself.
When the first rays of morning sunlight shone on Moen's face, he finally snapped out of his frenzied killing spree and felt completely refreshed.
Beside him, countless nightmare cards crumbled into dust and scattered in the wind.
Harvesting progress: 1000%
Harvesting death brings blessings.
[Target: Nightmare Card of the Queen of Hearts]
This was the first time Moen had known that the Death Note's harvesting progress could be increased to over 100%.
Looking at the purple sphere of light slowly rising in front of him, he reached out his hand.
[Night of Venting and Slaughter (Purple): Whenever you are bathed in the darkness, your abilities will increase with the number of enemies you kill (up to a maximum of 500%).]
