Doomsday Reboot: My Superpowers Absorb Everything

Chapter 47 The Devourer's Strange Movements and the Messenger of the Icefield

As the sunflower's flower head turned eastward in the morning light, Lin Ye stood before the underground prison of the fortress, gazing at the sealed core of the Devourer. A fine layer of white frost had condensed on the scale-vine iron sheet outside the glass jar, while the gray fleshy tumor inside was much more active than it had been three days ago, its small mouth opening and closing as if breathing.

"It's absorbing the yin energy from the prison." Zhao Shan leaned on his cane, his knuckles white from the effort. "Last night, during the lunar eclipse, I heard a grinding sound coming from the jar, like something was trying to crawl out."

Lin Ye's silver patterns gently adhered to the iron sheet. The moment the blue-purple energy seeped in, the tumor suddenly writhed violently, and countless small mouths opened at the same time, spewing out a gray mist that condensed into a blurry human face on the glass—the outline of the Bone King!

"It's mimicking the energy it's devoured!" Suya's green energy immediately enveloped the glass jar, attempting to suppress the tumor's abnormal movement. "If this continues, it will become a second Bone King!"

Skinny Monkey ran in carrying a lead-filled iron rod, with strips of cloth soaked in white-scaled snake bile wrapped around it: "Old Zheng said to use this to smash it, and he'll definitely turn it to dust!"

"Don't touch it!" Lin Ye pressed down on his shoulder, the energy of the silver pattern colliding violently with the gray mist of the tumor. "It's deliberately provoking us, trying to absorb more energy and burst out of its shell."

Just then, the tumor suddenly shrank, like a squashed sponge, instantly absorbing all the preservative solution in the glass jar. Immediately afterward, a crack appeared on the surface of the tumor, revealing a shimmering red light inside—fragments of the red stamen nucleus it had previously devoured!

"It's absorbing the energy from the red sha!" Zhao Shan's voice was filled with fear. "This thing can evolve!"

Lin Ye acted decisively, unleashing a burst of silver energy that condensed into a thick energy cocoon outside the glass jar, completely isolating the tumor from the outside world. "Stabilize it first." He wiped the sweat from his brow. "Su Ya, use your vines to weave an energy net around the cell. Anyone who gets close will have to be checked."

Having dealt with the Devourer's core, Lin Ye had just returned to the ground when he was stopped by soldiers in the watchtower. "Chief Lin, a strange person has come from the north, saying he wants to see you, and he's brought a... talking snow fox."

Standing in the open space at the fortress entrance was a man wrapped in thick animal hides, his skin a pale white from years of being deprived of sunlight, his eyelashes icy. Beside him crouched a pure white fox, its tail bushy like an umbrella, its amber eyes surveying the steel forest. Suddenly, it spoke, its voice like shattered ice: "The energy here is very clean."

The man removed the scarf covering half his face, revealing a scar running from his brow bone to his chin: "I am a messenger from the Ice Plains, named Ling Feng. This is my companion, Xue Ling." He pulled out a frozen token from his robes, engraved with a snowflake-shaped totem. "We come from 'Ice Prism Fortress,' and we have important business with you."

Lin Ye's silver markings warmed slightly upon contact with the token, revealing an extremely cold energy within—completely different from the icy energy of the White Scale Serpent, carrying a chilling aura. "Ice Prism Fortress?" he thought, recalling Zhao Shan's mention of the northern forces. "You also have the Red Sha infection there?"

Ling Feng's face darkened: "It's worse than the red bruises. 'Frozen corpses' have appeared on the ice plains. Anyone bitten by them will instantly freeze and become a new frozen corpse. Our fortress lord said that only those who master the energy of the white scales can subdue them, so he sent me to find you."

Xue Ling suddenly jumped onto Lin Ye's shoulder, bringing her nose close to his silver-patterned eyes: "Your energy contains the aura of the White Scale Serpent, but it's not pure; it's mixed with the scent of red rashes and lightning." She swayed her tail. "According to the ancient records of Ice Ridge Fortress, the White Scale Serpent has three hearts: one in an underground lake, one in the ice plains, and the other... in the Corpse Mother's lair."

Lin Ye's heart skipped a beat. Three hearts? They had only ever seen the white-scaled snake in the underground lake; could there be others?

"The core of the frozen corpse is a black ice crystal," Ling Feng added, "containing tiny snake scales, exactly like the fragments of the white-scaled snake's heart depicted in ancient texts. We suspect that the white-scaled snake of the ice field has been devoured by the frozen corpse."

Skinny Monkey walked over carrying an iron rod. Upon hearing the words "frozen corpse," he couldn't help but interject, "Even more powerful than the Red-Skinned Corpse? Can it withstand my bone blade?"

Xue Ling scoffed, "Your bones would be as brittle as popsicles in front of a frozen corpse."

Lin Ye ignored their bickering and focused his gaze on Ling Feng's lips, which were purple from the cold: "Let's go into the fortress first. Su Ya, prepare some hot soup and find them two warm rooms."

The story of Ice Ridge Fortress was even more bizarre than Lin Ye had imagined. Ling Feng said that the frozen corpses on the ice plains appeared three months ago. Initially, they were just ordinary zombies, but after being covered by a strange blizzard, they suddenly turned into monsters covered in ice. Not only were they fast, but they could also breathe out cold air to freeze everything.

"Most of our ability users are ice-based, so they can't hurt them at all." Ling Feng drank his hot soup, and his pale face finally regained some color. "The lord's daughter was bitten by a frozen corpse and turned into an ice block. She still stands in the square of Ice Ridge Fortress."

Xue Ling curled up by the fireplace, her tail sweeping the ground: "Ancient texts say that the three hearts of the White Scale Serpent correspond to three energies—purification from the underground lake, sealing from the ice field, and destruction from the Corpse Mother's Nest." It raised its head, a hint of solemnity flashing in its amber eyes, "The frozen corpses can control the cold because they devoured fragments of the sealing heart."

Zhao Shan suddenly put down his soup bowl: "I know where the Corpse Mother's lair is." He pulled out a yellowed map from his pocket and pointed to the northernmost glacier marker. "Dr. Chen mentioned in his notes that the earliest Corpse Mother experiments were conducted under the glacier, where there is a huge underground laboratory."

Lin Ye's silver markings suddenly flared up intensely, and images flashed through his mind—the red light within the Devourer's core beneath the ruins of the Bone Castle; the frozen corpses on the ice plains, snake scales within black ice crystals; and the white-scaled snake in the underground lake, its eerie blue eyes concealing sorrow.

"There must be a connection between these three." He clenched his fist, the lightning on the silver pattern flickering slightly. "The Devourer can absorb energy, the frozen corpse carries fragments of the White Scale Serpent's seal, and the Corpse Mother's lair... may very well hold the Heart of Destruction."

Ling Feng suddenly stood up, ice crystals falling from his animal-hide coat: "You're willing to come with me to the ice plains?"

Lin Ye looked at Su Ya; her green energy was dancing at her fingertips, clearly indicating she was ready. Skinny Monkey patted his chest, "How could I miss out on such a lively event? Perfect opportunity to try out the Ice Shard Spear Old Zheng just forged for me!"

"We need to make some preparations," Lin Ye said to Ling Feng. "The Devourer's core is still unstable, so we need to find someone to stay and guard the fortress."

Ultimately, they decided to leave the scarred woman and Old Zheng behind, while Zhao Shan also stayed due to health reasons to be responsible for researching the Devourer Core and the White Scale Serpent. Lin Ye, along with Su Ya, Skinny Monkey, Amu, and ten elite soldiers, followed Ling Feng to the Ice Plains.

On the night before their departure, Lin Ye went to the underground prison again. The Devourer Core was much quieter inside the energy cocoon, and faint snowflake patterns appeared on the gray tumor—clearly, it had absorbed the energy of the Ice Prism Fortress Token brought by Ling Feng.

"What exactly are you?" Lin Ye asked softly to the glass jar.

The tumor suddenly twitched, and a small mouth on its surface spelled out indistinct words: "...container..."

Lin Ye's heart pounded. Another vessel! Could the Devourer also be one of the vessels created by the Bone King?

He didn't ask any more questions and turned to leave the prison. Whatever the Devourer was, the most urgent task was to deal with the frozen corpses on the ice plains and find the Heart of Destruction in the Corpse Mother's lair.

The next morning, the group set off. Ling Feng rode a pure white mutated horse, with Xue Ling perched on his shoulder, occasionally issuing commands to avoid hidden ice crevices. Lin Ye's silver markings glowed slightly in the cold wind, and he could feel the extreme cold energy emanating from the distant ice plains, like a lurking behemoth.

After about five days of walking, ice began to form on the ground, and the air was as cold as a knife. Suya's green energy circulated slowly in this environment, barely managing to keep the vines from freezing. The skinny monkey, his icy spear covered in frost, still waved it excitedly: "They say the mutated bear claws of the Ice Plains can make the best daggers. Once we find a frozen corpse, I'll carve one for you!"

Lin Ye didn't reply. His silver markings suddenly pointed northwest, where the extreme cold energy was exceptionally dense, mixed with a faint aura of red rashes. "There's trouble ahead." He reined in his horse, his energy blade gleaming blue-purple in the sunlight. "Prepare for battle."

After crossing an icy slope, the sight before them made everyone gasp – hundreds of frozen corpses surrounded a small snowdrift, their skin bluish-gray, their joints covered in ice, and their eyes gleaming with an eerie blue light. Within the snowdrift, a struggling human figure could be vaguely seen, clad in the uniform of Ice Ridge Fortress.

"They are our scouts from the fortress!" Ling Feng's voice trembled, and the mutated horse pawed at the ground uneasily.

Xue Ling suddenly bristled: "Watch out! There's an 'Ice Corpse King' among them; its heart has the most snake scale fragments!"

Lin Ye followed Xue Ling's gaze and saw a monster standing in the center of the frozen corpse horde. It was twice the size of an ordinary frozen corpse, with a black ice crystal embedded in its chest. Sure enough, a small white scale could be seen inside.

"Suya, apply an insulating agent to protect everyone's weapons!" Lin Ye's energy blade burst forth with light. "Skinny Monkey, come with me to rescue them! Amu, provide cover with your bow and arrows!"

The battle erupted instantly. Lin Ye's energy blade slashed at the frozen corpse; the bluish-purple energy collided with the eerie blue chill, producing a sizzling sound, and the frozen corpse's icy outer shell melted instantly. The skinny monkey's ice-sharp spear was equally formidable; the white scale powder at the spearhead rapidly disintegrated the frozen corpse's body.

Although Suya's green energy circulated slowly, once infused into the vines, it caused thorny green shoots to sprout on the ice, tripping over many frozen corpses. Amu's arrows accurately targeted the frozen corpses' eyes, forcing one back with each shot.

The Ice Corpse King was clearly enraged. It roared to the sky, and the surrounding frozen corpses suddenly froze, the ice on their bodies rapidly thickening into hard ice armor. Then, the black ice crystals on the Ice Corpse King's chest burst forth with blinding light, and countless ice spikes shot from the ground toward Lin Ye and his companions.

"Use the Silver Pattern Energy to block!" Lin Ye shouted, and a blue-purple energy shield unfolded, blocking all the ice spikes. The moment the Silver Pattern made contact with the ice spikes, it absorbed some of the cold air, and a thin layer of white frost appeared on its surface.

"Its energy contains the sealing power of the White-Scaled Serpent!" Xue Ling's voice was filled with surprise. "Your silver markings can devour it!"

Lin Ye's eyes lit up. He stopped defending and instead condensed his silver energy into a blade, thrusting it towards the Ice Corpse King's black ice crystals. The Ice Corpse King attempted to block with its ice armor, but it was instantly melted by the blue-purple energy, and the energy blade precisely pierced through the ice crystals!

The black ice crystals shattered under the energy blade, the white scale fragments within transforming into streaks of white light that merged into the silver patterns of the forest. The Ice Corpse King let out a shrill scream, its massive body rapidly disintegrating into a pool of icy water. The surrounding frozen corpses, out of control, also melted, revealing the frozen corpses of ordinary zombies beneath.

Lin Ye helped the scout up from the snowdrift. Silver patterns gently brushed across his frozen body, and white light intertwined with blue-purple energy, gradually restoring color to the scout's skin. "Ice Prism Fortress... how is it?" the scout's voice was weak.

Ling Feng gripped his hand tightly: "We've come to rescue you, hang in there!"

Lin Ye looked at the newly added white lines on the silver pattern and could feel a new power flowing within him, cold and resilient, like the chilling winds of the icy plains, yet carrying a protective warmth. He knew that this was only the beginning of their journey across the icy plains; the real challenge awaited them in the Corpse Mother's lair.

The distant glacier gleamed golden in the setting sun, resembling a colossal tomb. Lin Ye gripped his energy blade tightly, its silver patterns shimmering in the cold wind. Carrying the newly acquired sealing power and the unwavering faith of his companions, he continued his journey into the unknown depths of the icy plains.

Behind them, among the shattered black ice crystal fragments, a small piece remained unmelted, shimmering with a ghostly blue light in the twilight, like a peering eye, silently burrowing into a crack beneath the ice.
