Doomsday Reboot: My Superpowers Absorb Everything
Chapter 41 The Shadow of the Container and the Church Bells
On the day the scarred woman's son's fever broke, Lin Ye was in the fortress's map room, circling the location of the old town church with a red pen. The church on the map was surrounded by dense red dots, each dot representing an area where red ecchymosis hyphae gathered, like a patch of blood that was spreading.
"The Black Crow Church has turned the church into a new breeding ground." Skinny Monkey leaned on his iron spear, the scales on his left leg already able to bend flexibly. "Scarred Sister-in-law said that there is a huge cultivation chamber on the third basement floor of the church, with six containers soaking inside, and they are injected with live human blood three times a day."
Suya walked in carrying a bowl of medicine, a faint green energy glowing around its rim. Inside was a potion to strengthen the child. "Can the container be saved?" she asked, looking at the red dot on the map. "Like the child in the cryogenics."
Lin Ye's silver skin warmed slightly. He thought of the child with the tumor on his chest, who was now helping out in the greenhouse with Lin Xi. Except for the occasional faint flush on his skin, he was no different from any other child. "It depends on the degree of infection." He drew a circle next to the church with a red pen. "Sister-in-law with the scar said that Container Six has begun to exhibit mirroring abilities. I'm afraid..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but all three understood—a fully awakened Red Sha container was no different from a self-evolving Red Sha corpse, and might even be more dangerous.
Just then, Lin Xi ran in carrying a ceramic jar filled with several plump sunflower seeds. These seeds had sprouted from the cracks in the concrete jungle, and the flower heads were already the size of a palm. "Brother, Sister Su Ya, look!" she exclaimed, holding up the seeds and laughing. "These seeds grow even better in the red clay soil!"
Lin Ye picked up a seed. As the silver veins approached, he could feel a faint red aura energy mixed within, yet it was firmly locked at the core by the sunflower's vitality. "They're devouring the mycelium." Lin Ye's eyes lit up. "Su Ya, use these seeds to cultivate new scale vines; perhaps they can counteract the container's mirroring ability!"
Su Ya immediately grabbed the ceramic pot and rushed towards the greenhouse, green energy dancing at her fingertips, clearly eager to begin her experiment. Lin Xi watched her retreating figure and suddenly tugged at Lin Ye's sleeve: "Brother, the guy in the freezer said the church bells are strange; every time they ring, lots of red-skinned corpses run there."
Lin Ye's heart skipped a beat. He remembered the mutated vultures attracted by the bell in the ruins of the cannery; it turned out that Black Crow Hall was using sound to control the Red Sha Corpse. "Skinny Monkey," he grabbed the map, "go tell Old Zheng to prepare ten shields made of scale vines, and also stock up on serum bullets. We'll set off first thing tomorrow morning."
The night before he set off, Lin Ye went to see the child in the freezer. The boy was sitting by the campfire, drawing on the ground with a piece of charcoal. He was drawing a church with black crows flying above its spire and six blurry figures standing at the entrance, each with a red dot painted on their chest.
"They're crying," the boy suddenly said, his voice still a little hoarse. "I can hear them crying every night. They're soaking in the water, unable to move."
Lin Ye squatted down beside him, his silver hair gently brushing against the back of the boy's hand. The boy's skin flushed slightly, then quickly faded. "Are they your friends?" Lin Ye asked softly.
The boy nodded, and the charcoal forcefully drew a line on the ground, separating the church from the six figures: "We used to work in the cannery. The people from the Black Crow Hall said that as long as you behave, you can be cured of red sha disease."
Lin Ye didn't ask any more questions, but simply patted his head. Some cruel truths are perhaps better left for children to know too early.
The next morning, Lin Ye, along with Skinny Monkey, Old Zheng, and ten elite Iron Hoof Alliance soldiers, set off for the old city under the cover of morning mist. The scarred woman wanted to go with them, but Lin Ye stopped her—her son still needed care, and the fortress needed someone to take charge.
The closer you get to the old town, the stronger the smell of red parasites becomes in the air. The buildings on both sides of the street are covered with mycelium, like they are wrapped in a thick layer of blood scabs. Occasionally, you can see a few red parasite corpses crawling in and out of the mycelium, moving several times faster than ordinary mutants.
"Be careful, these red-skinned corpses seem to be intelligent." The skinny monkey thrust his iron spear at a red-skinned corpse that lunged at him from the windowsill. The spear tip had barely touched the corpse's skin when it was struck hard by the mirrored iron spear, the impact numbing his hand. "Damn it, we've encountered a mirror image before even reaching the church!"
Lin Ye's energy blade cleaved through two red-skinned corpses, the silver patterns on the blade gleaming with blue light: "Don't use repetitive moves, their mirror images have a delay." He deliberately swept his energy blade horizontally, and when the red-skinned corpses mirrored the same movements, he suddenly changed his move and stabbed at their chests, accurately hitting the throbbing tumor.
The crimson corpse let out a piercing scream, its body rapidly shrinking and turning into a pool of red slime. Taking advantage of the situation, Old Zheng used his scale vine shield to smash open the mycelial wall in front of him, revealing a path leading to the church.
The church spire loomed in and out of the morning mist. The clock hands were stopped at 3:17, yet a faint ticking sound could be heard, as if someone were turning gears inside. Lin Ye gestured for everyone to stop, and Yinwen's senses followed the sound of the bells—there were at least a hundred red-skinned corpses gathered in the center of the hall, kneeling and worshipping towards the altar, as if performing some kind of eerie ritual.
"They're waiting for the bells to ring," the skinny monkey said in a low voice, the tip of his iron spear pointed at the church door. "Scarred Sister-in-law said that the bells will ring every noon, and then the red-scarred corpses will rush out of the church to grab living people to feed their containers."
Lin Ye glanced at the sky; there were still two hours until noon. "We'll go in through the side door and head straight to the third basement level." He pointed to a small door on the west side of the church, where the mycelium was relatively sparse. "Old Zheng will take three men to guard the stairs, Skinny Monkey will come down with me, and the rest of you will keep watch on the outside. When you hear the bells, use sunflower seeds to create smoke to distract the Red Sha Corpse's vision."
After assigning tasks, everyone sprang into action. The lock on the side door had long been corroded by mycelium, and Lin Ye easily pried it open with his energy blade. The corridor behind the door reeked of blood. More than a dozen dried corpses hung on the walls, all suspended from the beams by wire. Their skin clung to their bones like paper, and each had a neat hole in its chest, clearly indicating that their hearts had been ripped out while they were still alive.
"The Black Crow Hall feeds their vessels with the hearts of living people." The skinny monkey's voice trembled, his grip on the iron spear creaking. "These beasts..."
Lin Ye pressed down on his shoulder, signaling him to be quiet. The staircase at the end of the corridor led underground, the handrail covered in mycelium, sticky and slippery to the touch, like the skin of some kind of creature. With each step down, the air grew colder, and the faint sounds of liquid sloshing and suppressed sobs could be heard, as if countless people were trapped inside the walls.
The entrance to the third basement level was blocked by a heavy iron door, engraved with the same raven totem as the one used in the cannery, except the totem's eyes were red, staring at them eerily. Lin Ye's silver patterns adhered to the iron door, and dark purple energy flowed along the patterns. Suddenly, the iron door shook violently, and the sound of shattering glass came from inside.
"They sensed it!" The skinny monkey held his iron spear to his chest. "The container is inside!"
Lin Ye increased his energy output, and the silver-patterned blue light clashed violently with the red light of the iron gate, emitting a piercing shriek. Just as the iron gate was about to be blasted open, the church bells suddenly rang out—"Dong—Dong—Dong—"
The bell tolled dull and eerie, as if striking everyone's heart. The sobbing from the third basement level suddenly turned into a piercing scream, and the energy reaction behind the iron door surged wildly. Countless red pustule mycelia poured out from the crack in the door, like an angry red snake, coiling towards Lin Ye's arm.
"Oh no! The container has been awakened!" Lin Ye's energy shield blocked the mycelium in time, and he pulled the skinny monkey backward. "Get to the ground!"
As soon as the two rushed up the stairs, they saw Old Zheng leading a group of people fighting a group of red-skinned corpses. These red-skinned corpses were faster than the ones they had encountered before, and they could instantly replicate the soldiers' attack moves. Several Iron Hoof Alliance soldiers had already been injured by their own mirror-image moves and were lying on the ground groaning in pain.
"Use sunflower powder!" Lin Ye shouted, scattering the seed powder from his backpack into the air. The powder, upon contact with the red-skinned corpse, immediately burst forth with golden light, like countless tiny blades cutting through the mycelium, causing the corpse's movements to noticeably slow down.
Suya's newly cultivated scale vines were indeed effective! Lin Ye was overjoyed and was about to take the opportunity to rush out of the church when a deafening roar suddenly came from the third underground floor. The entire church was shaking, and countless cracks appeared in the ground. Red mycelium gushed out from the cracks and instantly wrapped around the ankles of the three soldiers.
"It's container number six!" The skinny monkey's iron spear pierced the throat of a blood-red corpse. Turning back, his face was deathly pale. "It's broken through the incubation chamber!"
Lin Ye looked back and saw a huge figure slowly rising from the entrance of the third underground level. It was three meters tall and covered with dark red carapace. Its face had no features, only a constantly throbbing red tumor. It was Container No. 6! Its arms could transform at will, sometimes into sharp claws and sometimes into spears. As soon as it appeared, it tore apart two red corpses that tried to approach.
"This thing is even more terrifying than the Eye of the Corpse Mother!" Old Zheng's scaly vine shield was struck by the container's claws, instantly leaving three deep gashes. "It can devour its own kind to strengthen itself!"
The church bells continued to toll, and more and more bloodied corpses poured in from outside, surrounding them completely. Lin Ye watched the soldiers fall one after another, then glanced at the approaching Container Six, and suddenly made a decision.
"Skinny Monkey, get Old Zheng and the others out of here!" Lin Ye's silver markings erupted with unprecedented light, and dark purple energy condensed into a huge energy ball in his palm. "I'll cover you!"
"Then what are you going to do?" the skinny monkey shouted anxiously, desperately blocking the attack of a red-skinned corpse with his iron spear.
"I have a plan!" Lin Ye threw the energy ball at container number six, the explosion temporarily forcing it back. "Tell Suya to cover the area around the church with sunflower seeds, and light them when I give the signal!"
Skinny Monkey gritted his teeth, grabbed the injured Old Zheng, and led the remaining soldiers out of the encirclement. Lin Ye watched their figures disappear into the morning mist, then turned to face the oncoming horde of red-skinned corpses. Silver markings flashed wildly on his right arm, like a burning purple-blue flame.
Container Six roared, its arm transforming into a giant hammer that slammed down on Lin Ye. Lin Ye's energy shield instantly deployed, but he was forced back several steps, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He could feel the container's energy continuously increasing; with each red-skinned corpse it devoured, its armor grew thicker.
The church bells suddenly rang urgently, as if urging something on. Lin Ye's silver pattern suddenly pointed to the cross behind the altar, where the walls were thicker than elsewhere and without a trace of red fungus—clearly the hiding place of the Black Crow Church.
He feinted to avoid the container's attack, then turned and charged toward the cross. The moment the energy blade cleaved through the wall, he indeed saw a passage leading deeper inside, where he could faintly hear people talking.
"Grab him! Don't let him ruin the ceremony!" A hoarse voice came from the passageway; it was the Black Crow Hall leader who had taken over the church after Bloodface's death.
Ignoring the roars behind him, Lin Ye plunged into the passage. He knew that to completely destroy this place, he not only had to deal with Container Six, but also find the "ritual" core that could control everything.
Behind the stone door at the end of the passage came a chilling sound of sloshing liquid. Lin Ye used his energy blade to cleave open the stone door, and the sight before him made him gasp – five enormous incubation chambers stood side by side, each containing a blurry humanoid figure with a tumor on its chest throbbing rhythmically. In the center of the chambers stood a bronze altar with six iron chains attached to it, each chain connecting to a chamber. The chains were covered with strange runes and glowed red with the sound of a bell.
"The ritual is just one step away." The Black Crow Hall leader stood beside the altar, holding a golden goblet filled with blood. "Once the core of Container Six is fused into it, the perfect Corpse Mother Container will be created!"
Lin Ye's silver pattern suddenly became intensely hot. He saw that the groove below the altar was covered with a thick layer of white scale snake scales. Clearly, the Black Crow Hall had known about the existence of the white scale snake for a long time and even wanted to use its scales to stabilize the energy of the container.
"Your death is nigh!" Lin Ye's energy blade transformed into a streak of light, heading straight for the leader of the Black Crow Hall.
Just then, a deafening roar came from the entrance of the passage. The enormous figure of Container Six blocked the entrance, its red fleshy growth staring intently at the altar, clearly also attracted by the energy here.
With the altar ceremony before him and the raging vessel behind him, Lin Ye found himself in a predicament similar to that he had faced in the valley. But this time, he held in his palm the golden powder extracted from sunflower seeds, the silver glint of which shone brighter than ever before.
The church bells continued to ring, but another sound was faintly mixed in—the sound of vines growing in the steel forest, the sound of horns coming from the direction of the fortress, and the faith and hope that countless people had gathered together.
Lin Ye took a deep breath and sprinkled the golden powder onto the altar. The energy of the silver patterns spread along the powder, intertwining with the blue light of the white scale snake scales to form a dazzling pillar of light.
"Want to create a Corpse Mother? First, ask the seed in my hand if it agrees!"
His roar echoed through the corridor, carrying a desperate resolve and an unwavering determination to protect everything. The battle had only just entered its most crucial phase.
