The Three Teachings Converge into One: The Path of the Mortal and the Saintly is the Same

The Three Ones opened their mansion, gathering a multitude of immortals who, upholding the old ways, came surging forth to inquire about Zen.

A profound principle can dispel a thousand-foot wave; the lotus's light points to the universe.

It is said that the auspicious time for the grand opening ceremony of the Sanyi Palace has arrived.

Kong Shen, acting as the master of ceremonies, announced loudly, "The grand ceremony for the founding of the Sanyi Palace begins—"

Su Qingxuan stepped forward three times, bowed to heaven and earth, and greeted the guests from all directions, then said loudly:

"Today, Su Qingxuan establishes the Sanyi Palace here to spread the way of the unity of the three religions."

The temple was newly established and extremely simple, but we are grateful for the continued support of all fellow practitioners.

Qingxuan was deeply grateful to have come to witness the ceremony.

"The Three Ones" means that the three teachings return to one, all laws return to one, and the ordinary and the holy return to one.

My path is neither Confucianism, nor Taoism, nor Buddhism, yet it is Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism all at once.

I wish to join with all fellow Daoists here to study the Great Dao and jointly realize its truth.

Having said that, he took the gold pen that Kong Shen handed him.

He wrote the three characters "Sanyi Palace" in mid-air.

The three characters transformed into golden light and flew towards the palace gate.

The originally blank plaque suddenly displayed three large characters.

Suddenly, a golden light shone brightly, illuminating thousands of miles.

Among the guests, some nodded to themselves, while others disagreed, but all applauded and congratulated.

Just then, a cold snort suddenly came from the horizon:

"What arrogance! The three religions united? You think you're worthy?"

Everyone looked in the direction of the sound and saw three streaks of light rushing towards them.

Three people appeared after landing.

The leader was a Taoist priest in black robes with a sinister face;

On the left is a red-robed Buddhist monk with a face full of horizontal lines;

On the right was a scholar in brocade robes, with an arrogant expression.

Seeing this, Kong Shen frowned and said in a low voice:

"Junior Brother Su, be careful. These three are notorious troublemakers in the eighteen heavens."

The man in black robes is Yu Xiaozi, the leader of the radical faction of Taoism;

The man in the red robe is Fayan, a Dharma protector ascetic in Buddhism.

The man in brocade robes is Meng Xingjian, the head of the Confucian school's Lisheng Hall.

They have always been radical and stubborn; I suspect they've come with ill intentions.

Su Qingxuan's expression changed slightly, but he stepped forward and cupped his hands in greeting:

"Fellow Daoists, you are guests from afar. Please take your seats and observe the ceremony."

Yu Xiaozi sneered:

"No need for pretense. Su Qingxuan, you are someone who ascended from the lower realm..."

Having only been in the Heavenly Realm for a few days, he dares to presume to claim "the unification of the three religions."

"You even want to open your own school and teach students? Do you have that kind of ability?"

The monk Fayan's voice boomed like a bell: "How can the essence of Buddhism be confused with Taoism and Confucianism?"

Your "Trinity Palace" is nothing but heresy, a cult that corrupts the will of Heaven!

Meng Xingjian is eccentric and unpredictable.

"The Venerable Wenru Tianzun is magnanimous and forgiving, and will not hold a grudge against such a madman as you."

Today we must clean house and act on behalf of Heaven.

"Demolish your Trinity Palace, lest it bring harm to the Heavenly Realm!"

Among the guests, some wore expressions of anger, while others remained silent, observing the situation.

Some people are secretly hoping for a good show.

The four fairies were already standing behind Su Qingxuan.

With the crimson-tasseled spear in hand, Xiao Lingxi had completed her Daoist incantation.

Xiao Lingyue radiated a faint Buddhist light, while Lin Wanqing half-opened her book.

If these three dare to make any rash moves, they will definitely take action.

Su Qingxuan gave them a look, signaling them to calm down.

He looked at the three of them and said calmly:

"Fellow Daoists, you believe that the three teachings cannot be unified. May I ask your reasons?"

Yu Xiaozi said proudly:

"The Tao follows nature, emphasizing tranquility and non-action; how can it be compared to the Confucian's elaborate rituals and teachings?"

Is this a conflation of the Buddhist concept of passive detachment from the world?

Fa Yan said, "The Buddha's teachings are boundless, guiding all sentient beings. Confucianism and Taoism are both minor paths."

Meng Xingjian sneered: "Confucianism is based on the fundamental principles of human relations and social order, and it places great importance on etiquette."

It is the foundation of governance of the three realms.

Taoism and Buddhism are both practices outside the secular world; how can they be compared?

Upon hearing this, Su Qingxuan laughed instead; it was just another tired, old cliché.

In the human realm, he began debating scriptures with others from a young age.

From the Mingde Altar to the Golden Palace, from the Central Plains to the frontier,

The journey of spiritual practice is accompanied by debates and questions.

Unexpectedly, upon arriving in the Heavenly Realm, I encountered the same old problems.

Su Qingxuan suppressed his smile and continued gently, "

The words of these three fellow practitioners precisely illustrate the deep-seated sectarianism among the three religions.

You only see the differences between the three religions, but not their similarities.

Do you not know that the Tao follows the natural way, and also emphasizes helping the world?

Buddhism guides people and also emphasizes cultivating virtue;

Does Confucian ethics align with the Way of Heaven?

He paused, then his voice carried throughout the room:

The Daoist Master said: "The highest good is to control water, for water benefits all things and is still."

The Buddha said: "Unconditional great compassion, universal empathy."

The Confucian master said: "If you want to establish yourself, help others to establish themselves; if you want to achieve success, help others to achieve success."

Although the three religions have different doctrines, are their underlying intentions the same?

All of this is for the benefit of all living beings and to bring peace to the three realms!

"As for methods of cultivation, Taoism focuses on refining qi, Buddhism on cultivating the mind, and Confucianism on cultivating the body."

They are meant to complement each other.

Why must we distinguish between them, and draw a line?

These words resonated with many guests who nodded in agreement.

Yu Xiaozi retorted angrily, "You're quite the smooth talker!"

No matter how eloquently you speak,

This won't change the fact that you're trying to mix the three religions and subvert the orthodox tradition!

I've also heard that you are a 'saint', good!

Today, I'll test you, this 'saint,' to see just how much you're really worth!"

After saying that, he actually made a move and struck Su Qingxuan with a palm.

The palm strike was fierce and contained the true techniques of the Daoist sect; the cultivator was actually at the mid-stage of the Golden Immortal realm!

The guests gasped in surprise.

To take action right at the opening ceremony of the mansion, Yu Xiaozi is truly unscrupulous.

Su Qingxuan also moved, raising his hand and pointing.

A touch of golden light emanated from the fingertip.

It transformed into a golden lotus flower, facing the palm strike.

Your path is too narrow, so although your palm strikes are powerful, they are merely techniques.

If the principles are not profound, then techniques are like trees without roots.

My path is one of inclusiveness, therefore even though the lotus is delicate...

Just then, a sigh came from the horizon:

"Yu Xiao, come back."

The figure of Taiqing Tianzun appeared in the clouds.

Although it was just an avatar, it still commanded the entire audience.

He looked at Yu Xiaozi and the other two, and slowly said:

The conflict between the three religions has lasted for 100,000 years.

The path Su Qingxuan has walked is beyond your comprehension, yet it is the hope for the future of the Three Realms.

If you are not convinced, you may go back and cultivate yourselves properly.

In the future, we will determine who is superior through principles, not through the display of force.

The three men, including Yu Xiaozi, exchanged glances, and finally bowed to the Heavenly Venerable before leaving dejectedly.

The Celestial Venerable then said to Su Qingxuan:

"Qingxuan, you don't need to worry about what happened today."

Now that Trinity Palace is established, it should be managed well.

Remember, though the road is long, you will arrive at your destination if you keep walking.

"I will remember this." Su Qingxuan bowed solemnly.

The Celestial Venerable's incarnation dispersed, and the grand ceremony for establishing the palace continued.

After this incident, no one dared to question the Trinity Palace to its face anymore.

The guests had witnessed Su Qingxuan's methods, and none of them dared to make a move.

The ceremony lasted until evening before the guests gradually dispersed.

After seeing off the last group of guests, Su Qingxuan and the four fairies returned to the Sanyi Palace.

A vegetarian feast has been prepared inside the hall; although there are no delicacies,

However, it was a spiritual food personally prepared by Xiao Lingxi and a divine wine warmed by Lin Wanqing.

Five people sat around a table, raising their glasses to drink together.

Xiao Lingxi laughed, "Today was truly exhilarating! Seeing Yu Xiaozi's humiliated expression was so satisfying!"

Chi Ying frowned: "These three will definitely not let this go. We must be careful in the future."

Lin Wanqing nodded with concern: "The Heavenly Realm may seem peaceful, but there are undercurrents surging beneath the surface."

The radical and stubborn forces within these three religions are considerable; perhaps today is just the beginning.

Xiao Lingyue continued, "The demonic obstacle has arisen. Young Master, you are in great danger today. That Yu Xiaozi disregarded his status as a Golden Immortal and acted decisively. We do not know the deeper reason behind it."

The path to unifying the three religions is destined to be fraught with difficulties. However…

The fairies then exchanged smiles and raised their cups to drink together.

Outside the window, the moon in the sky looks exceptionally large.

The bright moon has just risen, casting a gentle glow upon it.

The lights of Trinity Palace looked especially warm in the night.

The five had just finished their banquet when a servant boy suddenly announced from outside the hall:

I hereby inform the Palace Master that several fellow Daoists outside the palace request an audience.

He said he admired the teachings of the sages and came specifically to become their disciple.

Su Qingxuan and the fairies exchanged glances, all feeling surprised.

The grand opening ceremony had just ended when someone came to visit late at night, showing great urgency.

"Please ask them to wait in the side hall. I will be there shortly."

After giving his instructions, Su Qingxuan smiled at them and said:

"I don't want anyone to come and surrender so soon."

Lin Wanqing pondered for a moment and said, "If it's simply about becoming an apprentice, that's easy. However..."

At today's grand ceremony, the young master displayed his abilities and gained the support of the Heavenly Venerable.

It seems someone with ulterior motives is trying to test us.

Chi Ying stood up: "I'll go with you."

Xiao Lingxi and Xiao Lingyue also wanted to go, but Su Qingxuan waved his hand:

If they are truly sincere in seeking a master, having too many people around will only scare them away.

Although the side hall is not as grand as the main hall, it is still elegant.

At this moment, five people were standing in the hall: three men and two women.

They were all dressed simply and looked to be no more than twenty or thirty years old.

Their cultivation levels were both at the early stage of Human Immortal, clearly indicating that they were cultivators who had recently ascended to immortality.

But it is unknown which part of the human realm they come from.

Su Qingxuan raised his hand in a gesture of support:

"Fellow Daoists, there's no need for such formalities. Please have a seat."

He sat down comfortably at the head of the table and asked in a gentle voice:

"What brings you all here so late at night?"

The leader was a slender young man with bright eyes and sparse eyebrows.

His body was like a sharp sword; he stepped forward and said:

"This junior, Li Changfeng, is an ascended cultivator from the lower realm, the 'Qingyun Continent,' originally a swordsman."

These four were my fellow villagers when I was in the mortal realm:

Zhao Mingcheng, Zhou Ruolin, Sun Bushao, Qian Duoduo.

Zhou Ruolin is a beautiful woman.

Sun Bushao was a short, fat man.

Qian Duoduo is a round-faced young man with a cheerful-sounding name.

They remained in the Heaven of Reception because their path to heaven was incomplete and they had no orthodox sect to accept them.

But it seems like... recruiting people, stealing offerings, extorting money... which is not what we want.

Today I heard that the Sage has established his own government, and I also saw the Sage at the grand ceremony.

A single sentence revealed the true essence of the three religions; a single finger defeated Yu Xiaozi.

Therefore, I admire him greatly and have come to become his disciple.

We wish to follow the sage and cultivate the path of the unity of the three teachings.

Having said this, the five of them knelt down in unison: "We humbly beg the Emperor to take us in!"

Su Qingxuan scanned the five people with his divine sense and saw through their foundations.

These five people are all of above-average quality, pure in heart, and without any evil intentions.

"I observe that you originally cultivated the way of the sword; why have you switched to the method of unifying the three teachings?"

Su Qingxuan asked.

Li Changfeng looked up, a resolute glint in his eyes:

"The Azure Cloud Continent, where I reside, can also be called the 'Sword Dao Continent'."

Everyone cultivates the way of the sword; Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are secondary.

Because swordsmanship training is relentless, once one unlocks the secrets of enlightenment, progress is rapid, and ascension is not difficult.

Su Suqingxuan suddenly realized: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism practice rely on the transmission of mental methods.

We must proceed step by step, proceed cautiously, and not rush or hastily.

Only by accumulating profound knowledge and experience can one have a chance to rise to the top.

Swordsmanship is sharp and effective, making ascension easy, but its foundation is weak.

Just like the techniques of Yu Xiaozi, there is a natural distinction between lightness and heaviness, thickness and thinness in one's own way.

Li Changfeng's voice came again: "But I think that although the way of the sword is advantageous, it is biased."

Sword cultivators only value sharpness, but they find it difficult to cultivate their character and do not comprehend the Great Dao, thus ultimately falling into the lower realm.

After ascending to heaven, I realized even more that cultivation in the celestial realm, if focused solely on swordsmanship...

Then it will be difficult to make any further progress, let alone glimpse the whole picture of the Great Dao.

Today I heard the sage speak of "the three teachings returning to one, all methods returning to one, and the ordinary and the holy returning to one."

Only then did I realize that this was the path I had been seeking.

Zhao Mingcheng said in a simple voice:

"I...I just think what the sage said makes sense."

Zhou Ruolin said softly, "This junior also practices swordsmanship and water magic."

Today, upon hearing the sage's words, "The highest good is to control water," I realize the shortcomings of my past practices.

It only captured the form, not the spirit.

Sun Bushao and Qian Duoduo also expressed their sincere feelings.

After listening, Su Qingxuan pondered for a moment.

He established the temple with the intention of teaching disciples and spreading the teachings.

These five people are of good character and can be the first batch of disciples.

Su Qingxuan said slowly, "If you are truly willing to learn,

I'll be staying at Trinity Palace for now, and start by learning the basics.

If I remain steadfast in this path after three years, how about formally becoming an apprentice then?

The five were overjoyed upon hearing this and quickly kowtowed, saying, "Greetings, Master!"

Su Qingxuan waved his hand: "Let me ask you all."

It is clear that the unity of the three teachings is not simply about practicing all three methods simultaneously.

Instead, we should extract its essence and integrate it thoroughly.

The path of spiritual cultivation is more than ten times more difficult than simply practicing one method.

Are you still willing?

"Yes!" the five shouted in unison.

"Okay." Su Qingxuan nodded with satisfaction.

"It's getting late, you should all stay here for now."

"Come to the Hall of Three Unity at dawn tomorrow, and I will teach you the initiation method."

After saying this, he summoned the boy on duty and arranged for the five people to stay temporarily in the guest courtyard.

After the five people withdrew, the four fairies emerged from the back hall.

It turned out they were still worried and came secretly.

Xiao Lingxi laughed, "Brother Su, you're taking on five disciples already!"

Lin Wanqing said, "The arrival of these five people is suspicious. Don't you think it's a bit too coincidental, young master?"

The government was open during the day, and people would come to surrender at night.

They were all independent cultivators without a master.

Chi Ying coldly replied, "If this is a spy sent by someone with ulterior motives, I will show no mercy."

Xiao Lingyue clasped her hands together and said, "Amitabha! Sister Chiying, please don't let your killing intent be so strong."

In my observation, these five people are simple-minded and do not seem like spies.

However... one should always be wary of others; it's best to observe and test them discreetly.

Su Qingxuan smiled: "Wanqing's concerns are valid, but Chiying's actions are too extreme."

I have used my divine sense to investigate, and there are no restrictions or marks on their bodies.

What he said didn't seem like a lie. However...

Whether someone was behind it all remains unknown.

Let's see how they behave in the future, and observe them gradually.

He paused, then said, "Now that the Sanyi Palace is established, it is inevitable that it will take on disciples and spread its teachings."

These five are just the beginning. I intentionally set some rules:

Those who enter the Trinity Palace are not asked about their background or cultivation level; only a pure heart is required.

The Sanyi Palace requires no fame or fortune; anyone willing to learn the way of the unity of the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) is welcome to join.

Anyone is welcome to try. Pass the assessment, and you'll be accepted.

Lin Wanqing's eyes lit up: "This method is excellent! However, how should the assessment be determined?"

"Simple." Su Qingxuan had already planned it out.

"The integration of the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) prioritizes character and moral development. The assessment consists of two stages:"

The first test, "Asking the Heart," examines the steadfastness of one's resolve in the path.

Do they possess the compassion to save the world and deliver all living beings?

The second stage, "Practice," involves creating an illusion or assigning tasks.

Observe whether their actions conform to the righteous path.

Xiao Lingxi clapped her hands: "That's great! Then I can help with alchemy too!"

"Refine some pills to test one's character!"

Chi Ying said, "I can set up a training ground to test their willpower."

Xiao Lingyue said, "I can observe his mind in the meditation room."

Lin Wanqing chuckled: "Then I'll take charge of the written exams to see how strong their foundations are."

It can also be tailored to the specific circumstances and individual needs of the student.

The five of them had reached a decision, and since it was getting late, they each returned to their respective courtyards to rest.

The next morning, before dawn, it was still early to leave.

Li Changfeng and his four companions were already waiting in front of the Sanyi Hall, their expressions respectful.

At exactly 7:00 AM, Su Qingxuan walked out of the Hall of Three Ones.

He wore a Qing dynasty robe and had a gentle expression.

The four fairies also arrived and stood on either side.

"Greetings, Master; greetings, Four Fairy Maidens." The five hurriedly bowed.

Su Qingxuan nodded, gesturing for them to stand up, then said seriously:

"Today I will teach you the method of entry."

The unity of the three religions is based on the word "one".

This is the origin, the true heart, and the great way.

You originally practiced swordsmanship, water magic, or other methods.

They emphasize magic and neglect the fundamental principles, achieving rapid ascension while maintaining a shallow foundation in the Dao.

The practice of Sanyi Palace emphasizes the foundation of mental cultivation.

Today I will begin by teaching you the 'Foundation Building' chapter.

After speaking, Su Qingxuan sat down cross-legged, and the five others quickly followed suit.

"The foundation of Confucianism lies in 'rectifying the mind and cultivating sincerity';

In Taoism, the foundation building stage involves "refining essence into qi";

The foundation of Buddhism lies in "enlightening the mind and seeing one's true nature".

The three methods have different paths, but in reality they are interconnected.

Cultivating a righteous mind and sincere intentions is the foundation for understanding one's true nature.

To refine essence into qi, one must have a pure mind.

To understand one's true nature, one also needs a calm and peaceful mind...

"Today I will first teach you the 'Three-in-One Foundation Building Technique'."

This method integrates Confucian qi cultivation, Taoist guiding exercises, and Buddhist visualization.

It was created by my ancestors. Listen carefully...

He slowly recited the mantra, each line distinct.

He then used his divine sense to imprint the essential teachings of cultivation into the consciousness of the five people.

Although this Foundation Building Technique is only an introductory method, it already demonstrates the wonder of the unity of the three teachings.

The five people had never heard of such a thing before, and they listened with rapt attention.

An hour later, the instruction was completed.

Su Qingxuan said, "You should all stay here and cultivate diligently. I will come to check on your progress at any time."

"Yes!" The five people respectfully responded and immediately closed their eyes to digest what they had learned that day.

Su Qingxuan nodded to the four fairies, then got up and left.

The four women also went about their own business:

Lin Wanqing went to Wenhua Pavilion to organize the classics, while Xiao Lingxi went to Qingxu Pavilion to familiarize herself with the alchemy furnace.

Xiao Lingyue went to the Prajna Pavilion for meditation, while Chi Ying went to the training ground to practice her spear skills.

Three more days passed.

That morning, Su Qingxuan was meditating in Guiyi Courtyard.

Suddenly, I sensed a fluctuation of spiritual energy in the direction of the guest courtyard.

He scanned the area with his divine sense and noticed a change in Li Changfeng's aura.

It seems a breakthrough is imminent.

"Oh? That's quite a talent." Su Qingxuan smiled slightly.

In a flash, he was already beside Li Changfeng.

Li Changfeng sat cross-legged on a futon, his body surging with spiritual energy.

He was originally at the early stage of the Human Immortal realm, but now his aura is rising steadily.

Your high comprehension and rapid breakthroughs are a good thing.

Their steady and gradual approach is also perfectly acceptable.

Just then, the four fairies arrived upon hearing the news.

Upon seeing Li Changfeng's breakthrough, everyone offered their congratulations.

Xiao Lingxi's eyes darted around, and she suddenly said:

"Brother Su, I think the foundations of those three sects are too weak."

If one were to begin practicing the unity of the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism), it might be a case of "the body not being able to absorb the benefits."

Why don't we each pass on some of our skills?

"I noticed that Zhou Ruolin also practices water magic."

She has an affinity with my Taoist water-based methods; I can teach her some Taoist water techniques.

Lin Wanqing also said, "Zhao Mingcheng is honest and straightforward, which perfectly embodies the Confucian principle of 'sincerity'."

I can also teach him some Confucian methods of cultivating inner strength.

Xiao Lingyue looked at Sun Bushao:

What does it mean for people's hearts to turn towards goodness? What does it mean for the three realms to be in harmony? What does it mean for ordinary people and saints to walk the same path?

Su Qingxuan smiled and said, "When people's hearts turn towards goodness, it is the benevolence of Confucianism, the compassion of Taoism, and the mercy of Buddhism."

The ideal of universal harmony in the Three Realms means that all beings in the Three Realms only seek the Dao, not any particular sect.

The path of sages and ordinary people is the same; sages guide ordinary people with noble aspirations, and ordinary people possess noble ambitions.

Both ordinary people and sages can cultivate themselves; everyone can become a sage.
