Dream of the Red Chamber: I can see the hidden labels of the beauties.

33. Superficially submitting and complying while secretly acting against orders.

Jia Can thought about his meeting with the Emperor Emeritus the next day, a matter that concerned whether he could personally kill Jia Zhen and other crucial matters for his future. He absolutely could not break his promise.

He realized he needed to find a way to prevent the three maids and servants who came to closely monitor him from stopping him and following him.

After a moment's thought, glancing at the broken door, an idea suddenly came to mind. A glint of shrewdness flashed in his eyes, and he spoke to Cui Lü and the other two with a slightly polite tone:

"Master is so kind. I'll have to trouble you three from now on. As you can see, my yard is a mess, covered in dust, and the cabinets and chests are all crooked. It's been a long time since anyone has properly cleaned or tidied it up."

"Moreover, the door to the main room was kicked down by Rong-ge'er when he came earlier. Look, there's not even anything to cover it up."

"I can't even sleep. It's the middle of the night, and the wind is blowing in. I'm sure I'll catch a cold."

As he spoke, his gaze swept over the three of them, then he gave the order:

"Alright then, I'll trouble the three of you tonight to clean the yard thoroughly, tidy it up inside and out, and also fix this door so I can get a good night's sleep."

Upon hearing this, the three exchanged bewildered glances, their respectful expressions freezing on their faces.

They spoke politely, but they didn't really respect Jia Can at all.

Everyone in the household knew that Jia Can was cowardly, timid, and even worse than a servant.

Their main task here was to monitor Jia Can. As for serving Jia Can, it was just for show; no one took it seriously.

Unexpectedly, Jia Can actually took advantage of the situation and started instructing them on how to work.

They're being treated like laborers, cleaning the yard and repairing the doors.

This was completely unexpected. For a moment, all three of them were stunned, no one moved, and no one answered.

Seeing this, Jia Can raised an eyebrow slightly, his eyes turned cold, and he questioned in a deep voice:

"What? You're not willing? Fine, I'll go find the master right now and explain things to him, and have him send three more people who are willing to serve me."

After saying that, he made a move to walk out, and took a step out.

The three then realized what was happening. The head maid, Cuilu, quickly stepped forward, blocking Jia Can's path, and said urgently with a smile on her face:

"Second Master Can, you misunderstand. We are willing, of course we are willing. The master sent us here to serve you, and these are things we should do."

"We'll get right there. You can just sit here comfortably. You don't need to go looking for the master anymore."

They knew Jia Zhen's temperament very well. If Jia Can went to find Jia Zhen at this time, regardless of the outcome, Jia Zhen would blame them first and they would be sure to be scolded.

Moreover, it was already late, and Jia Zhen had already gone to bed. If their peaceful sleep was disturbed because of the three of them, not to mention what Jia Can would do to Jia Zhen, the three of them would definitely get a beating.

After Cui Lü finished speaking, she winked at the other two, signaling them to obey Jia Can first.

The maidservants and old women, well aware of the implications, echoed his sentiments:

"Yes, Second Master, we are willing. This is what we should do. There is no need for you to go to the Master."

"Just sit here and relax. The door will be fixed soon, and you'll be able to sleep peacefully."

Upon hearing this, Jia Can's expression softened somewhat, and he gently waved his hand:

"Alright, you guys hurry up, it's getting late, I need to rest, so be quick!"

The three of them readily agreed. No matter what, they would first dissuade Jia Can from going to find Jia Zhen, and everything else would be negotiable.

Seeing Jia Can turn and go into the inner room, disappearing behind the screen, the three of them breathed a sigh of relief, exchanged glances, and quietly left the main room, going into the courtyard.

As soon as she came out, the maidservant began to complain:

"I don't know how to fix doors. I can clean and pour water, but that door is falling apart. How am I supposed to fix it? Do you guys know how to fix doors?"

The old woman who did the menial work also shook her head, looking troubled.

"I don't know how either. This door isn't something you can just nail down a couple of times; you need a craftsman to do it. But where are we going to find a craftsman in the middle of the night?"

Cui Lü was a bit more astute than the other two, and her mind worked faster. She glanced around to make sure Jia Can hadn't followed her out before lowering her voice and saying:

"Keep your voices down, don't let Master Can hear us. Let's just pretend for now and get through tonight first."

"Sweep the yard, wipe the house, and as for the door, just prop it up and make it look like we're the ones doing the repairs."

"Tomorrow we'll report to the master again and ask for his instructions on how to handle this matter. After all, the master is the rightful master, and we'll do whatever he says."

The maids and old women all thought it was a good idea and nodded in agreement.

After discussing it, the three of them split up and began to act.

Cui Lü led the maid to fetch brooms and buckets, while the old woman went to the woodshed to find some sticks and ropes, intending to secure the broken door in place.

Soon, the sound of brooms sweeping and tidying could be heard in the courtyard. Three figures were busy working under the candlelight, and it looked quite professional.

Although the three of them were trying their best to pretend, even pretending was exhausting.

Most importantly, they were also worried that Jia Can would find out they were just fooling around, so they had to make some noise.

They deliberately made a swishing sound while sweeping and made some clanging noises when moving things, so that Jia Can inside would hear them and think they were working hard.

Therefore, when the three of them felt they had done enough, they were all exhausted and covered in sweat.

Her emerald green hair was damp with sweat and stuck to her forehead. A dark sweat stain appeared on the back of the maid's short jacket. The old woman was panting heavily, one hand supporting herself against the wall.

After wiping the sweat from her forehead, the head maid, Cuilu, prepared to inform Jia Can that the work was finished and that she could go back to rest.

He took two steps up to the roof, just about to call for someone.

Unexpectedly, Jia Can walked out of the main room, his face ashen, and questioned in a deep voice:

"What have you been doing? I told you to clean everywhere and fix the doors, and this is how you've done it?"

The three of them were startled, their bodies trembled violently, and before they could catch their breath, they stumbled and fell to Jia Can's side.

Emerald Green spoke first, sounding somewhat aggrieved and flustered:

"Second Master, we're innocent! We did everything according to your instructions. The rooms and courtyard were cleaned and tidied up spotlessly. Look at the ground, you can even see your reflection in it."

"This... this door is temporarily secured. We're not craftsmen, we don't have the tools, and we can't do a proper repair. Please bear with it, Second Master. Tomorrow we'll ask the Master for permission to have a craftsman come and fix it for you."

Jia Can sneered inwardly, thinking, "If you go and inform Jia Zhen, I'll be the one who suffers."

These three were clearly spies sent by Jia Zhen to monitor him. If he sent them to report back, Jia Zhen would surely cause trouble again.
