Chapter 40 A Cause and a Effect
Shi Guang collapsed to the ground. Grandpa came up with a broom, thinking the house had been burgled. He was stunned when he saw Shi Guang and Zhang Rui.
What are you doing?
Time remained silent.
Did you lose something?
Time nodded.
"Go find it where you lost it, what are you rummaging through my place for?"
Where you lost it, go back there to look for it.
Time suddenly stood up and rushed downstairs.
Lakeside.
The water is still the same color, and the wind is still blowing in the same direction.
Time stood on the shore, watching the water for a long time.
He took out his phone and called He Jiajia.
Come to the lake and play a game of chess with me.
When He Jiajia arrived, Zhang Rui had already helped set up the chessboard, thanks to Shi Guang's arrangement.
Everything was exactly as it was back then; he remembered it clearly.
Are you alright?
He Jiajia sat down and looked at the time.
"Playing chess."
The two began to place their pieces, one step, two steps, three steps... in the exact same order as before.
When the game reached its forty-third move, time seemed to stand still.
It was right here that Chu Ying's voice rang in his ears.
There was no sound today.
"I'm not going anymore." Shi Guang stood up.
He Jiajia also stood up: "What's wrong with you?"
Time didn't answer. It took off its coat and shoes, and then suddenly jumped into the lake.
The water was very cold and poured into his ears, nose, and mouth.
He didn't struggle, letting himself sink.
There was nothing at the bottom of the lake.
They grabbed his arms with both hands and dragged him ashore.
The three of them were soaking wet and sat on the cement ground.
He Jiajia, panting heavily, glared at Shi Guang: "Are you crazy?"
Time lay on the ground, gazing at the sky, repeating the same phrase over and over: "He's gone...he's gone..."
"Who left?"
After resting for a while, Zhang Rui went over and lifted Shi Guang from the ground.
"Walk."
He brought Shi Guang back to the dojo, led him to his dormitory, rummaged through the closet for a clean set of clothes, and tossed them to Shi Guang.
"Put it on."
Time stood there, dripping wet, as if it hadn't heard a thing.
Zhang Rui pulled him directly into the bathroom and changed his clothes.
The clothes were clearly a size too big, with the sleeves covering half of his fingers.
Shi Guang remained unresponsive, her eyes red-rimmed.
After a long while, as if coming to her senses, she finally uttered, "He's really gone?"
Before Zhang Rui could answer, he suddenly knelt on the ground and started crying.
"Why...why did he leave...?"
He said he wouldn't leave...
He said the moon will always be there...
Zhang Rui squatted down and gently placed his hand on his shoulder.
"Cry."
Time keeps crying.
After crying until she was exhausted, she sat on the ground in a daze, her eyes red and swollen, her mind wandering.
Zhang Rui poured him some water, but he didn't drink it; he just took the cup and put it aside.
There was really no other way, so I had to leave him alone for a while and go downstairs to see if there was anything to eat.
Judging from Shi Guang's appearance, he definitely hasn't eaten anything.
As soon as she stepped outside, she ran into Ban Heng, who looked concerned and asked what was going on.
Zhang Rui shook his head slightly, saying nothing and not knowing how to say it.
Ban Heng thought for a moment and said, "Why don't you take Shi Guang to Lan Yin Temple?"
"Lanyin Temple?"
"There's a small temple in the mountains, it's very efficacious. Take him there to pray, maybe he'll understand something. Besides, the scenery there is beautiful, it'll help him relax."
Zhang Rui thought for a moment, then dragged Shi Guang out the door.
After eating something in the cafeteria, Ban Heng drove the two of them into the mountains.
Zhang Rui sat in the passenger seat, leaving Shi Guang alone in the back.
The mountain road was bumpy, and the car swayed and climbed slowly.
The trees on both sides grew denser, and sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting patches of light on the car windows.
"This temple is quite old," Ban Heng said as he drove. "It's said to have been passed down from the Southern Liang Dynasty, but I don't know the specifics. The monks in the temple aren't very talkative, but they're very kind."
When Shi Guang heard the words "Nanliang", his fingers twitched slightly.
The car was parked at the entrance of the mountain. The temple was not large, and the incense offerings did not seem very popular.
Ban Heng didn't go inside; he waited for them in the car.
Shi Guang and Zhang Rui walked in. The courtyard was quiet, with only the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves.
A young monk came out from inside, saw them, and put his hands together in prayer.
"Sir, what can I do for you?"
Time opened its mouth, but didn't know what to say.
Zhang Rui asked, "I heard your temple originated from the Southern Liang dynasty?"
The monk glanced at them and nodded: "According to the senior monks, it seems so, but I'm not entirely sure myself. How about I take you to see the abbot?"
The young monk led the two inside, through a courtyard, and into a meditation room.
A monk, around forty years old and slightly overweight, sat in the meditation room, wearing a gray monk's robe. He was reclining on the couch, holding a palm-leaf fan in his hand, fanning himself idly.
Hearing the noise, it opened one eye, looked at the two of them, and then closed it again.
"Master, these two benefactors have some questions to ask."
"I understand, you may leave."
The monk withdrew, and the lazy monk sat up, put the palm-leaf fan aside, and looked at Shi Guang and Zhang Rui.
His gaze lingered on Shi Guang for a moment, then on Zhang Rui.
Then he looked at the clock and spoke his first words.
"Why are you the only one who came?"
Time didn't understand his meaning: "What do you mean by 'I'm all alone'?"
The lazy monk did not answer. He picked up the teapot on the table, poured himself a cup of tea, and slowly took a sip.
Do you know the saying, "A cause and effect are intertwined"?
Time is unpredictable.
The lazy monk looked at him and slowly said, "Lan Yin refers to a beautiful predestined relationship. Xu Guo refers to a fleeting ending. These four words mean that good things in this world are not lasting, colorful clouds easily disperse and glass is fragile. Meeting is fate, and parting is also fate."
"But I don't want to be apart."
"Master, I heard that our temple was passed down from the Southern Liang Dynasty? Is there any record of who built it?"
Upon hearing Zhang Rui's question, the lazy monk was slightly surprised, but still replied, "The monks in the temple have been nameless for generations, leaving no name behind, and their names are not recorded."
"Did the people who built the temple leave anything behind?"
The lazy monk swayed as he got up, went into the back room, and came out a while later with a folding fan in his hand.
The moment Shi Guang saw the fan, his eyes lit up: "This is...!"
"My lord, nothing in this world can be forced. To have met you is already the greatest blessing."
The lazy monk handed the fan to Time, leaned back on the couch, picked up the palm-leaf fan, and fanned himself idly.
It was almost dark when we left.
Ban Heng was still waiting at the mountain gate, smoking by the car door. When he saw them come out, he put out his cigarette.
"How is it?"
Time didn't speak; it opened the car door and got in.
Zhang Rui got into the passenger seat and fastened his seatbelt.
Ban Heng glanced at Shi Guang in the rearview mirror, asked no more questions, and started the car.
The car swayed and bumped as it drove down the mountain, and dusk rolled in from all directions.
Shiguang sat in the back seat, clutching the fan in his hand, looking at the blurry mountain shadows outside the window.
"elder brother."
"Um."
"Thank you."
"Um."
Time remained silent, and the car continued its journey, its headlights illuminating the road ahead.
The mountain breeze blew in through the cracks in the window, carrying the scent of pine resin and earth.
