Chapter 111 Grandfather and Grandson
They left Okinawa early the next morning.
The car was parked at the airport entrance, and the sunlight shone on its white body, reflecting a dazzling light.
Tianyan got out of the car, carrying a small suitcase, and stood beside the car, looking at the runway in the distance.
An airplane was taxiing, the roar of its engine growing louder as it approached and then receded into the distance, eventually disappearing into the horizon.
Gojo Satoru jumped off the car, stretched, his knuckles making a crisp cracking sound, sunglasses perched on his nose, a lollipop dangling from his lips, looking like he had just finished a pleasant trip.
"Finally, it's time to go back," he said, his tone carrying a sense of "I had a lot of fun, but I'm still a little reluctant to leave."
Riko Tenten got out of the car, still holding a whale shark plush toy in her arms, and stood next to Misato Kuroi, looking at the airport terminal entrance with a complicated expression.
Xia Youjie walked at the back, got out of the car, stood there, looking at the distant sky, lost in thought.
Nanami Kento and Haibara Yu walked ahead, already inside the terminal, waiting for them at the entrance. Haibara Yu waved in their direction, his face bearing that signature, energetic smile.
"Hurry in! We're going to be late!"
As the plane took off, Riko Tennen sat by the window, watching the islands outside grow smaller and smaller. Her eyes were a little red, but she didn't cry. She just stared out the window, her lips pressed tightly together, her fingers gently stroking the armrest of her seat.
Misato Kuroi sat next to her, holding her hand, without saying a word.
Gojo Satoru sat behind them, wearing sunglasses, with his legs crossed and chewing gum. He looked much the same as when he arrived, but his gaze would occasionally fall on the back of Tennori Riko's head, and there was something indescribable in his eyes.
Xia Youjie sat in the last row, leaning back in his seat with his eyes closed, it was unclear whether he was asleep or lost in thought. His complexion was much better than before, but there was still a hint of gloom between his brows.
Tianyan sat at the front, leaning against the window, looking out.
The plane flew through the clouds, and sunlight streamed in through the window, warming his face.
The airport was bustling with people, and the noise mingled with the flight information broadcast over the loudspeakers, echoing through the spacious waiting hall.
A little boy stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, looking up at the plane taxiing outside. His eyes were wide open, his mouth was slightly agape, and his face was full of curiosity and excitement.
His short pink hair shimmered softly in the sunlight, and his bright eyes, like two polished black gems, were fixed intently on the plane that was getting further and further away.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!"
He tugged at the sleeve of the old man beside him, his voice clear and resonant, carrying a striking weight in the noisy hall: "Look! An airplane! A huge airplane!"
The old man next to him wore an old gray coat, his hair was gray, and the wrinkles on his face were like a cracked riverbed, but his posture was very straight. He stood there like an old pine tree that had weathered many storms, except for a red mark on his head that looked a bit strange.
He looked down at the little boy beside him, a slight smile curving his lips, a smile that carried a kind and doting meaning.
"That's an airplane, Yujin." The old man's voice was hoarse but clear, and he pronounced each word very clearly.
"Airplane." The little boy repeated the word, as if savoring its meaning, then his eyes brightened even more. "Grandpa, how high can an airplane fly?"
"Very high," the old man said, "higher than a bird can fly."
"Wow!"
The little boy exclaimed in surprise, pressed his face against the glass, and his breath condensed into a thin layer of white mist on the glass. He wiped it away with his hand and continued to stare at the plane that was getting smaller and smaller.
The little boy nodded, turned his face away from the glass, turned around, and looked up at the old man with an innocent, curious light in his eyes: "Grandpa, did we come here to fight this monster called an airplane?"
The old man's gaze returned from the sky to his grandson's face, which was filled with excitement and curiosity. He paused for a second, then reached out and gently placed his hand on his grandson's head; his palm was rough and calloused.
Then he squatted down and looked the little boy straight in the eyes.
"No, the one we're looking for isn't called a monster."
He said in a soft but earnest voice, "Call the curse spirit."
"Cursed spirits." The little boy repeated, nodding as if reciting the word silently in his mind. Then he looked up at the old man, a bright smile spreading across his face. "So, do we have to fight lots and lots of cursed spirits?"
"Yes," he said, his voice low but clear, "We need to fight many, many cursed spirits so that you can grow quickly."
"Let's go, Hishito."
He looked out the window at the plane that had become a tiny dot, then stood up, took the little boy's hand, and turned to walk towards the airport exit.
The little boy followed behind him, his steps light and quick, his pink hair swaying slightly in the wind. He would occasionally turn his head to look at the increasingly distant sky outside the window, his eyes bright.
"Grandpa, what does a cursed spirit look like?"
"They have all kinds."
"Are there anything bigger than an airplane?"
"have."
"Then I want to fly in planes too! To fight those powerful cursed spirits!"
The old man's lips curved slightly: "The big one is not bad either, but the small one also needs to be beaten."
"Little one?" The child looked up at his grandfather.
The old man glanced down at his grandson, a strange look flashing across his face: "The kind that's the same size as a person."
......
Higher vocational college.
Riko Tennen stepped out of the car, looked up at the ancient building before her. The gray stone walls appeared somewhat eerie in the twilight, the dark brown tiled roof was covered with withered leaves, and the two black pines by the entrance swayed gently in the wind, making a rustling sound.
She stood there, her hands hanging at her sides, her fingers slightly curled, and her lips pressed tightly together.
Misato Kuroi walked up behind her, put her hand on her shoulder, and said nothing.
Riko turned her head and glanced at her, forcing a smile that seemed to say, "I'm fine, don't worry." But there was something indescribable in her eyes, like fear, or some deeper, more complex emotion.
Gojo Satoru got out of the car, hands in his pockets, walked over to Tennari Riko, tilted his head and glanced at her: "What's wrong? Scared?"
Riko glared at him, her mouth open as if to say something, but she swallowed the words back. She just stared at him, her eyes reddening and her lips trembling slightly.
Gojo Satoru looked at her expression, paused for a second, then reached out and patted her on the head with a light touch, as if soothing a cat with its fur standing on end.
"Don't be afraid."
He said, his voice not loud, but very clear: "We're here."
