Douluo Continent: I can overdraft the future in advance
Chapter 48 Wang Yan
Luo Yun and Chen Jiyong found a class.
Just as I sat down, I heard light, steady footsteps coming from the doorway.
A young man in a white teacher's uniform walked into the classroom. He looked to be in his early thirties, with a thin face, wearing silver-rimmed glasses, and his hair was neatly combed. He was carrying a stack of documents and exuded a gentle yet rigorous academic air.
Wang Yan.
He walked up to the podium, put down the documents, glanced across the classroom, and a faint smile played on his lips.
"I am your new homeroom teacher, Wang Yan."
The classroom fell silent.
"Class One is a mixed class of offensive and control types." He flipped through the roster, his gaze lingered on the list for a moment, then he looked up. "For the appointment of the class monitor, I propose Luo Yun. Does anyone have any other opinions?"
No one spoke in the classroom.
Wang Yan waited for a moment, and seeing that no one spoke, he nodded.
"Since no one objects, the class monitor is decided. Next, we'll elect the vice class monitor."
After a vote, a vice class monitor was finally elected.
"Zhou Ze, twelve votes." Wang Yan looked up at the boy. "Zhou Ze, from today onwards you are the vice class monitor of Class One."
The boy whose name was called stood up and nodded slightly to the class. He wasn't tall and had an ordinary appearance, but his eyes were bright and held a calm demeanor when he looked at people. Luo Yun remembered him—during the freshman assessment, he was the captain of another team, his martial soul was a strange scythe, a power-attack type, and he led his team into the top sixteen.
"The vice class monitor's duties are to assist the class monitor in managing the class and to act as class monitor when the class monitor is absent." Wang Yan closed the roster. "That concludes today's lesson. Everyone, please familiarize yourselves with the new environment. Luo Yun will stay behind for a moment."
Wang Yan's office was at the other end of the corridor, and it was a bit larger than Zhou Yi's office.
"Have a seat." Wang Yan pointed to the chair opposite the desk and went around to sit down behind the desk.
Luo Yun sat down, waiting for him to speak.
Wang Yan didn't rush to speak. He took out a folder from the drawer, opened it, and found Luo Yun's information—all the records from enrollment registration to the freshman assessment, with sticky notes on each page marking key information.
"I've reviewed your information many times." Wang Yan looked up at Luo Yun. "Eleven years old, a Great Soul Master, second Soul Ring is quasi-thousand years old, Martial Soul is Ice Falcon. Your physical abilities far surpass those of your peers."
He closed the folder and placed his hands on the table, crossed over each other.
"But that's not what interests me most."
Luo Yun looked at him.
"It's your martial soul." Wang Yan's eyes lit up, his tone filled with the excitement unique to academic researchers. "Has your martial soul changed? Ice Falcon, a mid-level bird martial soul, ice attribute, it shouldn't have such a low temperature."
Luo Yun remained silent for two seconds. He couldn't reveal the existence of the system, and while he could speak of some aspects of the ice marrow from the far north, he couldn't reveal everything either.
"In the far north, when I was hunting for my second spirit ring, I encountered some special circumstances." Luo Yun carefully chose his words. "Before it died, the Ice Crystal Grass absorbed a spiritual treasure called Ice Marrow. Its energy was locked in the spirit ring and entered my body. The Ice Marrow modified my spirit ring and also modified my martial soul."
Wang Yan's eyes lit up even more. He took out a small notebook from the drawer and quickly jotted down a few notes.
"Ice Marrow...that's something you can only come across once in a lifetime." He looked up. "And then? Your martial soul changed after that?"
"Yes." Luo Yun nodded. "The energy of the Ice Marrow settled in the Soul Ring and Martial Soul, slowly fusing together. After I returned from the far north, the form of the Martial Soul's possession changed."
Wang Yan made a few more notes in his notebook, then looked up, his gaze becoming even more focused.
"I suspect that your martial spirit origin may be more than just the Ice Falcon."
Luo Yun's heart skipped a beat. Wang Yan's judgment coincided with his guess—ever since the day he underwent the Ice Marrow transformation of his martial soul, he had vaguely felt that his ice attribute temperature was abnormal. Master Fang had mentioned it, Zhou Yi had mentioned it, and now Wang Yan had brought it up again.
"I'm not entirely sure myself," Luo Yun said, not giving a direct answer. "But I can feel that my martial soul is slowly changing. Every time my soul power increases, the temperature of the ice drops a little."
Wang Yan nodded, remained silent for a moment, and then said something that surprised Luo Yun.
I want to observe you a bit.
"observe?"
"It's not an invasive experiment," Wang Yan quickly explained. "It's just periodically recording changes in your martial soul, ice attribute temperature, and soul power growth curve. It won't take up too much of your time, nor will it affect your normal cultivation."
He paused, then his tone became sincere.
"I've always been very interested in the study of spirit mutations. Your case is very special—you were born with the Ice Sparrow spirit, which evolved into the Ice Falcon, and your ice attribute temperature is far beyond normal levels. Such cases are rare throughout the entire continent. If your transformation process could be recorded, it would be very valuable for the study of spirit techniques."
Luo Yun looked at him without saying a word. His impression of Wang Yan was similar to that in the original work—a scholar who truly loved research, not the kind of person who would do anything for fame and fortune.
"Okay." Luo Yun finally nodded, "But I have one condition: the content of the observation cannot be disclosed without my permission."
Wang Yan paused for a moment, then smiled: "No problem. I agree."
"Okay." Luo Yun handed the paper back to him.
Wang Yan took the paper, his expression visibly relaxing: "Then it's settled. Starting this Sunday."
After leaving Wang Yan's office, Luo Yun went straight back to his dormitory.
He needed to find a quiet place to absorb the bone from the Frozen Eagle's left arm.
He opened the box, and a chilling aura surged out once more. This time, he didn't suppress the reaction within his body, but instead allowed the Ice Falcon Martial Soul to surge within him, letting the miniature meridians in his arms operate wildly. That familiar aura was like a key, unlocking a door within his body that had always been closed.
He took out the left arm bone of the Frozen Eagle and held it in his left hand.
The moment the soul bone was in hand, a bone-chilling coldness exploded from the palm, spreading upwards along the meridians of the left arm, rushing straight to the shoulder, chest, and spine.
I don't know how much time has passed.
The chill gradually faded, replaced by an unprecedented sense of fullness.
Luo Yun took a deep breath and activated his Martial Soul.
A blue, icy light surged from his body, covering his arms and upper body. He raised his right hand, activated his first soul skill, and exhaled a cloud of icy mist. The room instantly filled with a white mist, the area of which was about the same as before, but the temperature was noticeably lower.
A 30% increase, or at least more.
Luo Yun withdrew his soul skill and was about to dissipate the martial soul possession when he suddenly froze.
He sensed it—deep within his martial spirit, at the core of that icy blue light, something was moving.
Luo Yun closed his eyes, trying to capture that feeling. But every time he was about to touch it, the aura receded, as if it wasn't the right time yet.
He opened his eyes and frowned.
The Frozen Eagle Soul Bone not only enhanced his soul skills but also touched the origin of his martial soul.
He suddenly remembered what Wang Yan had said—"Your martial spirit origin may not be as simple as the Ice Falcon."
If his martial soul is really not just the Ice Falcon, then what is it?
The Ice Sparrow evolves into the Ice Falcon. What will the Ice Falcon evolve into next? Ice-attribute bird-type martial souls are considered above average; anything above that is a high-level martial soul. What are some examples of high-level ice-attribute bird-type martial souls? Ice Phoenix? Ice Luan?
But those martial spirits are of too high a grade. How could someone with innate soul power level three awaken a martial spirit of that level?
A thought suddenly flashed through Luo Yun's mind.
Great Master.
Ten thousand years ago, Yu Xiaogang's martial soul was Luo Sanpao, a mutated dog with extremely low innate soul power, which everyone considered a useless martial soul. However, later research proved that Luo Sanpao was not a useless martial soul, but rather that its innate deficiency caused the martial soul to mutate, downgrading it from a high-level martial soul to a low-level one.
If a person's innate soul power is insufficient, but their martial soul itself is of a high grade, will it "disguise" itself as a low-grade martial soul due to insufficient innate conditions? Once acquired conditions improve, soul power increases, and physique strengthens, will the martial soul slowly "awaken" and return to its original grade?
Luo Yun took a deep breath, suppressing his excitement. It was too early to draw conclusions, but his martial soul was indeed constantly evolving with each fortuitous encounter, from the Ice Sparrow to the Ice Falcon, from ordinary ice attribute to near-extreme ice temperature. If this trend continued, the grade of his martial soul would continue to rise.
What he needs to do is continue to look for opportunities that can stimulate the evolution of his martial soul.
