Douluo Continent: I can overdraft the future in advance
Chapter 19 First Combat Experience
Three days later, Luo Yun and Master Fang arrived at Icewind Town, the last town in the northern border of the Heavenly Soul Empire.
The two found a hotel to stay in. The hotel wasn't big; the first floor was a tavern, and the second floor had guest rooms.
The room was small, with two narrow beds, a table, and a stove.
Luo Yun tossed his package onto the bed and sat down. His legs were a little sore from walking for three days. Master Fang sat on the opposite bed, took a map from his package, spread it on the table, and studied it by the light of the stove fire.
The two ate some dry rations and went to bed early. The fire crackled in the stove, and the wind howled outside, as if something was howling in the distance.
After an unknown amount of time, the fire in the stove dimmed, leaving only a faint red glow in the room. Luo Yun drifted off to sleep.
"Luo Yun".
Master Fang's voice came from behind, very soft, but very clear.
Luo Yun regained consciousness, didn't turn over, and responded with a soft "Mmm".
"Do you know why I came to the Spirit Battle Empire?"
Luo Yun was taken aback. Master Fang had never talked to him about these things. For two years, apart from teaching him about soul tools and occasionally mentioning soul beasts and cultivation, Master Fang had never mentioned his past.
"have no idea."
There was a moment of silence. The fire crackled and flickered with red light.
"I am from the Sun Moon Empire," Master Fang said. "I was born in Mingdu."
Luo Yun didn't move, but his eyes widened. The Sun Moon Empire, Mingdu, synonymous with soul tools; the Sun Moon Royal Soul Tool Academy, Mingde Hall, the most advanced place for soul tools.
"I was considered a genius when I was a child." Master Fang's voice was calm, as if he were telling someone else's story. "I passed Level 1 at ten, Level 2 Soul Master at twelve, and Level 3 at eighteen. My master said that I have a chance to pass Level 4 before I turn twenty and enter Mingde Hall."
He paused.
"But my martial spirit is not good enough."
Luo Yun waited for him to continue.
"Moon Wolf, sounds alright, right? But the upper limit is only level three innate soul power. Although there are many ways to improve soul power in the Sun Moon Empire, my foundation is too weak. Ten years ago, when I left the Sun Moon Empire, I was already level thirty-three. In ten years, I have only improved by four levels."
The fire in the stove dimmed a little more.
"So many ideas, but I can't put them into practice. No matter how well the blueprints are drawn, if my soul power can't keep up, and I can't keep the carving knife steady, I can't carve the magic array. I know exactly what to do, but I just can't do it. That feeling..." Master Fang paused for a moment, "Never mind, I won't say anymore."
Luo Yun wanted to turn the tables and say something, but Master Fang didn't give him the chance.
"Seeing you is like seeing myself back then." Master Fang's voice returned to its usual coldness. "You're a genius, just like me, but you're different. Your talent as a Soul Master isn't bad either; you're level 20 at ten years old. You can go on this path."
"Master Fang—"
"Alright," Master Fang interrupted him. "Get some rest; tomorrow will be tiring."
Then he turned over, facing the wall, and stopped talking.
Luo Yun lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The fire in the stove had died down, and the room was dark, with only a little moonlight seeping in through the cracks in the window.
---
The two set off before dawn the next day.
Heading north from Icewind Town, the vegetation became increasingly sparse, and the temperature dropped lower and lower. After walking for half an hour, frozen ground began to appear underfoot.
"The outer edge of the far north is just ahead." Master Fang stopped and took out the silver round shield and the short sword from his pack, hanging them on his waist.
"Stay close to me and don't wander off," he said. "The spirit beasts here are much fiercer than those in the Star Dou Great Forest."
Luo Yun nodded and followed behind him.
After walking for about half an hour, Master Fang suddenly stopped and raised his right hand.
That's a gesture to stop.
Luo Yun immediately squatted down and held his breath.
A hundred meters ahead, a pack of gray-white wolves was roaming the ice field. There were more than a dozen of them, large and small, their fur almost blending into the snow and ice, making them almost invisible without close inspection. The leader was a huge alpha wolf, standing at least 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder, with fur darker than the other wolves and icy blue eyes that coldly stared in their direction.
"Icefield wolves," Master Fang said in a low voice. "The alpha wolf lives for a thousand years, while the others are around a hundred years old. They live in packs and have a strong sense of territory. We've entered their territory."
"Are you scared?" Master Fang glanced at him sideways.
"A little."
As soon as he finished speaking, the alpha wolf raised its head and let out a long howl. More than a dozen dire wolves pounced at the same time, surrounding the wolf from all sides with astonishing speed.
Master Fang made a move.
Two spirit rings lit up around him—one white, one yellow, and one purple. With his spirit attached, his eyes turned pale gold, his figure grew taller, and his movements became more than twice as fast as usual. Moon Wolf, a power-attack type.
The moment the dagger was drawn, a pale blue light shone on its blade. With a flick of his wrist, Master Fang sent the light shooting out from the tip of the blade, instantly transforming the dagger into a three-foot-long sword.
The first direwolf pounced in front of him, but he dodged to the side, sweeping his longsword across, and the wolf's head fell to the ground. The second one pounced from the side, but he raised his left hand, and a semi-transparent light shield popped out from his silver round shield. The direwolf crashed into it and was sent flying.
Gradually, the corpses of the dire wolves lay scattered on the ground, but more pounced. The alpha wolf stood behind, motionless, its icy blue eyes coldly fixed on Master Fang, as if waiting for an opportunity.
"The Icefield Wolf is clever." Master Fang's voice remained steady. "The alpha wolf is testing the waters, waiting for my soul power to be nearly depleted before making its move."
He took two round balls out of his pocket with his left hand and tossed one to Luo Yun.
"A level three soul-guided shield," Master Fang said. "It can be used once the soul power is activated, and it can last for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, more than enough to block the attacks of these beasts."
He charged out again, slashing with his longsword and felling two more. The remaining wolves retreated, circling the light barrier, no longer daring to approach easily.
The alpha wolf finally made its move.
"A thousand-year-old soul beast." Master Fang's voice finally turned serious. "Interesting."
He gripped his long sword and stepped forward to meet them.
At the same time, from the side, two dire wolves circled around and pounced on Luo Yun.
Luo Yun caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of his eye and spat out a cloud of icy mist. The pale yellow soul ring lit up, and the icy mist precisely enveloped the first wolf, instantly slowing its speed and causing its limbs to slip on the ice.
Luo Yun dodged another dire wolf's attack by sidestepping it, grabbed its neck by the fur, and slammed it to the ground. The miniature meridians in his arms unleashed a power far beyond that of his peers at that moment. The wolf was thrown around in a daze, and Luo Yun punched it on the head, knocking it unconscious.
"then."
Master Fang's voice came from ahead. Luo Yun looked up and saw a three-foot-long metal rod flying towards him. He caught it; it felt heavy in his hand, and its surface was engraved with simple magic array patterns, so it must be some kind of soul tool.
The first wolf trapped by the icy mist finally broke free and lunged at Luo Yun's leg. Luo Yun dodged to the side and swung his short stick, striking the wolf hard in the waist. The dire wolf howled in agony, collapsed to the ground, and could no longer get up.
Ahead, Master Fang was dealing with the wolf king. The wolf king's movements were too fast to see, but Master Fang was able to anticipate them every time, and his long knife always managed to strike a vital spot the moment the wolf pounced.
Luo Yun rushed forward and breathed a cloud of icy mist at the wolf king. A pale yellow spirit ring lit up, and the icy mist enveloped the wolf king's head and front half. The wolf king's speed slowed down instantly, and Master Fang's longsword slashed down, striking its other foreleg.
The wolf king let out a miserable howl and turned to run away.
Master Fang did not chase after him. He sheathed his knife, turned around, glanced at the bloodstains on Luo Yun's arm, and then at the three wolves on the ground.
"Not bad," he said, "but my reaction time was too slow. You should have used Ice Fog when the first wolf pounced, instead of waiting for the second one."
