Chapter 20 Brother
Logan calmly pulled out his old cell phone from inside his jacket, opened his contacts, found the contact labeled "sister," and called.
"beep……"
It was Claire's cell phone that rang.
"I'm taking this call."
She took out her phone and walked to the side.
"Feed?"
"Hey, Claire."
The familiar voice puzzled her until she turned around and saw Logan holding the phone.
"It's me, Logan."
Her doubts deepened, and she hung up the phone, complaining dejectedly, "Why are you playing me...?"
"No, Claire."
Logan corrected him, "Which card did you check for the call?"
Claire picked up her phone again and looked at the SIM card displayed on the caller ID.
That wasn't the phone number I left for Logan last night; it was a different one.
A phone number that has been used for 8 years.
The phone number she used to call her brother.
"How...how did you know this phone number?"
Claire stared wide-eyed at the handsome man in front of her, a man she didn't really know.
"He's my brother? No, impossible. We haven't seen each other for six years. Even if we hadn't seen each other for twenty years, he couldn't possibly be this handsome."
"Is he someone I used to know? No, that doesn't make sense. I don't remember having a friend this handsome, otherwise I wouldn't be single all this time."
"Then he could only have gotten this phone number later. How exactly did he do it..."
"Stop guessing, Claire."
Logan interrupted her thoughts, "I'm Kieran's friend, we've been wandering the streets together for a long time."
He paused for a moment, then ultimately decided not to tell the other person the truth.
"The night before last, he froze to death in a garbage dump. When I was collecting his body, I found this phone and have kept it with me ever since."
He didn't say how he collected the body.
Claire stared intently into his eyes, trying to detect even the slightest hint of deception, even a fleeting retreat.
But none of that mattered; his eyes held only the truth.
Claire's hands fell limply to her sides, and she slowly dragged herself back to sit on the edge of the flowerbed.
"Has my brother, Kieran, ever mentioned me?"
"Yes, he said he only has one relative left, his sister, and that he hasn't been in contact with her for six years."
"I've been waiting for his call, but it never came. During our last conversation, he said he was at Pioneer Square, and that I came here to work a few months ago... But he clearly has my number, so why doesn't he call me?"
Claire was completely distraught, her face devoid of its former radiance. She murmured, desperately seeking an answer.
"He was afraid of disturbing your life. Nobody wants a drug addict to break into their life. He kept his phone number as a memento, a reminder that he still has family."
Kieran is dead. What he looked like before he died is not important. Let's embellish his appearance to make the living more comfortable.
Telling her the truth, that Kieran died from a bottle of stimulant cocktail, would only make her feel more disgusted, regretful, and sorrowful.
"He is my only family..."
"I'm her sister..."
"I have no family now..."
Claire hugged her legs, buried her head, and began to sob silently.
Logan wanted to say something like, "You still have me," or "From now on, I'll be your brother," but then he thought that they had only known each other for two days and weren't that close, so he gave up.
He sat quietly beside her, offering silent companionship without uttering a single word of comfort.
America doesn't need comfort, America just needs help.
If you can't offer her a shoulder to lean on, or a dozen dollars, then please shut your mouth, which serves no practical purpose.
After a long while, Claire gradually calmed herself down.
The dead don't need to think about tomorrow, but the living do.
She has to go to work in the afternoon and can't greet guests with a crying face.
"Thank you for telling me this."
Her voice trembled slightly, but she spoke without pausing, a resolute determination to face life alone.
Life goes on.
"It's what I should do. Kieran is a good man, he just went astray."
Claire's eyes had hardened.
"I have never blamed him. He was born into that kind of family. His father died in a street gunfight when he was 3 years old, and his mother died from an enhancement drug when he was 12. He had no choice in the situation."
"He had no choice, but he protected me and ensured that I never had to touch any enhancers in my entire life."
"To ensure I could finish university, he was even willing to be with a perverted old rich man..."
She gazed ahead, her voice no longer trembling.
"He has done so much for me, I should continue to live a good life."
See you at our store, Logan.
Goodbye, Claire, take care on your journey.
Watching her departing figure, Logan muttered to himself:
"Kieran, it seems that not only I received your gift, but we both received hope for life. You traded your body for her college tuition, and you used your corpse to help me get through this winter."
"From now on, I will do my best to take care of her, at least to prevent her from being kidnapped by some black man on the street at night."
A gentle breeze suddenly arose, brushing against his hands that were hanging down on his lap, and briefly enveloping them.
It felt like shaking hands with the wind.
[Task Completed: Siblings]
You helped Sister Claire find her brother, so she no longer has to miss him.
[Reward: +20 Merit Points]
[Honor is the most important thing to the Astronauts. You corrected Kieran's image in Claire's eyes with a white lie.]
[Reward: +20 Merit Points]
[You promised Kieran that you would take good care of his sister in the future, which is very much in line with the honor of an Astronaut.]
[Reward: +20 Merit Points]
You concealed the existence of the filthy Nurgle's Lair; this sordid history will not appear in Claire's memory.
[Reward: +20 Merit Points]
You did not choose to use insidious schemes to gain the nun's trust.
[Reward: +20 Merit Points]
Another series of merit rewards followed, but Logan did not receive any Chaos points, and he did not favor Chaos in the process of completing the mission.
He opened the panel:
[Host: Logan]
[Rank: Recruit]
[Merit Points: 460]
【chaos
Khorne: 2 (His whole body hardened)
Neggoth: 4 (The blood and sweat of a loving father)
Slaanesh: 4 (seems even more Slaanesh now)
Jianqi: 3 (The disordered memories have stabilized)
[Skill: Pulsating Pus (Foul)]
"My merit points have reached 460. Two more missions at most will be enough to exchange for the second heart."
"I wonder what kind of enhancement this Astartes organ will bring me."
After closing the panel, I didn't know when, but two henchmen had already come up behind me, looking in the direction Claire had left.
"Boss, what's wrong with her?" Jonah was always curious.
"I learned of the death of my only relative, and now I'm all alone."
"They're just like us now, that's how it is in America." Sean didn't seem too moved, as if he were reading a novel he already knew by heart.
"Huh? Isn't that exactly what she needs right now?" Jonah had a sudden inspiration.
Logan glanced at him and simply said, "Americans need independence."
At 4 p.m., Logan arrived at the Leaf store on time and was greeted by a flustered, muscular George at the door.
Seeing his muscular physique extending to his head, Logan remembered the half-figure he had seen in the alley last night, and asked:
"Hey! George, what's the rush?"
George jolted awake like a startled wildcat, then gave an awkward and fake smile:
"Ah... I have something to do, my friend is waiting for me at the gym..."
