Chapter 6 Chekhov's Gun
"Why are you here?" Chi Que continued to ask.
"I...I don't know, I really don't know...I opened my eyes and found myself in the room..." she sobbed.
"Get up." Chi Que released his arms and looked her over.
The girl with the oval face exuded youthful energy, her large eyes now filled with tears, as if she were about to cry.
"Go down from here, you should be able to find other people who will take care of you," Chi Que told her.
The girl's face turned pale: "I...I'm afraid of the dark..."
"Afraid of the dark?" Chi Que frowned.
He had a vague feeling that something was wrong.
Most normal people would find it difficult to fully articulate their feelings when faced with such a series of shocks.
Their words were often illogical and contradictory, but the girl in front of them was perfectly normal and there was nothing wrong with her.
The absence of any abnormalities is the biggest abnormality.
"What is your identity?" Chi Que asked.
"Identity?" The girl paused, then asked, "Aren't we all the same?"
"It's different," he made up. "There's a wolf among us who kills people every night. We have to find the wolf, and I'm a guard, so I have to patrol every night."
He stared at the girl: "Who are you?"
"I am..." she began, but then seemed to realize something, "What if you were the wolf?"
"If I were a wolf, I could kill you right now, and no one would find out," Chi Que asserted.
The girl hesitated for a moment before finally speaking: "Okay, actually I'm a prisoner, locked in a room at the manor, but as compensation, there's plenty of food in the room, which I can give you now."
He nodded: "I see..."
Okay, confirmed, we're not on the same path.
Chi Que suspected that the other party's mission might be completely different from theirs, not about surviving for three days, but something else entirely.
For example, kill them all.
That's why he deliberately brought up the word "wolf" to test her, and sure enough, he saw a hint of unease in her eyes.
Now that the other party had fallen into the trap, Chi Que decided to further reinforce this concept: "But why do you say that everyone's status is the same?"
The girl was clearly taken aback for a moment, then immediately said, "Because... I've been in the room the whole time and don't know what's going on outside."
Okay, the logic is complete.
Chi Que applauded inwardly with satisfaction, his expression softening: "That makes sense."
"Mmm-hmm." The girl nodded repeatedly. "In that case, can I come with you? I'm afraid of the dark."
We've come full circle.
"Keep up." This time, he nodded.
As he spoke, he shielded the girl in front of him.
The girl's expression stiffened for a moment: "Um...aren't you a guard? Shouldn't you be protecting me?"
Chi Que shook his head and said sternly, "I need to guard against danger from behind. If anything happens, I will take action."
Besides, isn't being a guard just a title? Why would she have such a preconceived notion that I should protect her?
He frowned inwardly.
Has the other person never played Werewolf?
Since that's the case, he's going to start spouting nonsense.
"By the way," Chi Que said, following behind her, "Don't ask others about their identities, and don't tell others about your own."
"But you already asked me who I am," the girl pouted, expressing her dissatisfaction.
"Because I'm a guard," Chi Que explained. "Guards have the right to interrogate others, which is reasonable, isn't it?"
She thought about it and it seemed to make sense.
Just as Chi Que was fooling the little girl, he finally found the room where the logistics officer was.
He stepped aside, blocking the girl who had been following behind him from entering the doorway: "You wait here, I'll be right back."
The girl looked puzzled: "Why? There might be danger inside. Wouldn't it be safer for two people to go in together?"
She tried to peek inside.
Chi Que stretched out his arm and steadily blocked her.
His face remained expressionless, as if stating an objective fact: "No, rules are rules."
"Rules? What rules?" the girl frowned.
Chi Que continued his offhand fabrication: "Because only guards have the right to enter private rooms to conduct searches."
The girl seemed to want to argue, but Chi Que's words sounded quite serious, so she just pursed her lips and said, "So many rules."
He reluctantly took half a step back, crossed his arms, and leaned against the corridor wall, which was considered an acceptance of Chi Que's rules.
"Don't wander off." Chi Que gave one last instruction, then turned around, took a deep breath, grasped the doorknob, and gently turned it.
He slipped inside, quickly closing the door behind him to block the girl's view.
The interior was equally dilapidated, covered in thick dust, with furniture lying askew, as if forgotten by time.
Without time for sentimentality, Chi Que quickly scanned the room, finally fixing his gaze on the photo frame on the bedside table.
This should be where the photos were returned.
He pulled a toolbox from under the bed, grabbed a screwdriver, and quickly disassembled the picture frame.
A cold, metallic object emitted a crisp, clinking sound.
It's a key.
Chi Que was somewhat surprised; it really was a coincidence.
Or perhaps the key itself is the reward for the mission?
With that thought in mind, he put the photos back.
The game notification immediately rang in my ears.
[Task Completed]
He breathed a sigh of relief, then suddenly realized that the picture frame was unusually heavy, and it seemed that something was hidden inside.
He took a screwdriver and disassembled it.
It was a pistol.
He picked up the pistol, and instead of immediately becoming overjoyed, he calmly and quickly inspected the gun.
Out of bullets.
And it's rusted too.
Chi Que knew it wouldn't be that simple.
Chekhov's Gun - Gray and White
[Rank: Iron]
An old, worn-out pistol, but it was empty.
[Swan Song: This gun can fire one last time, guaranteed to hit the target and cause damage before breaking down.]
If a gun is shown in the first act, then that gun must fire in the third act.
[Cannot be taken out of the instance]
"Pretty artsy," Chi Que commented.
This could undoubtedly be used as a powerful weapon in a critical moment, and he carefully put it away, although he still couldn't find the bullets.
He pushed open the door and said to the girl, "Go back."
Chi Que had the girl retrieve the food from the room, and then the two returned to the hall.
"You...you're back?" The student noticed Chi Que first, then saw the girl. "Wait! There's another person?"
Chi Que smiled and said, "What are you talking about? Haven't we always been five people?"
In an instant, the three of them were on high alert, looking at Chi Que as if he were not a living person, but a demon crawling out of hell.
"Stop joking." Chi Que put down the food in his hand. "She is the sixth player who went missing."
Yeah, probably.
He added in his mind.
"Food?" The burly man's eyes were instantly drawn to it.
The other two were also staring at him expectantly.
