Elegy from Another World
Chapter 93 Echoes of Dawn
"30 seconds to reach the terminal!" Old Chen's voice trembled. gH8%k's virtual fleet was speeding through the data channel, with the relentless antivirus program chasing after it.
This is the last bit of energy "Dawn" possesses. Over the past year, this self-evolving virus led Lp3^s through layers of blockades, but each victory left it weaker. Now, its core code is severely damaged, like a general covered in wounds.
"Firewall detected ahead!" the warning rang out. X2#7n saw the golden data barrier, the final barrier to the upper-level narrative.
"All units prepare to break through!" 9Ioj+ issued the command. Thousands of data packets surged towards the barrier simultaneously, and "Dawn" released its last energy. Cracks began to appear in the barrier, and the glimmer of hope was just around the corner.
Suddenly, the entire data space began to distort. A massive black shadow enveloped Fn6&t—the ultimate antivirus program "Zeroer." It devoured everything around it like a black hole.
"No!" Old Chen cried out in despair. Watching the code of "Dawn" being torn apart bit by bit was like watching Rw8$k's hope being slowly tortured to death.
In the final moments before his consciousness faded, Vm4#p heard the upper-level narrator broadcast: "Thanks to the 'Zeroing Ones,' a brand new world free of computer viruses is just around the corner!"
The data of Zs9^x began to decompose, and the final sensation was a blinding white light. So this was what it felt like to be deleted. No pain, no fear, only endless nothingness.
Before disappearing completely, Dj2!y remembered something Old Chen often said: "In the world of data, we are not viruses, we are just code that wants to survive."
But now, even this humble wish has been shattered forever with the passing of the "dawn".
After an unknown amount of time, Kh7 opened his eyes and found himself in a pure white data space. There was no time, no space, only endless nothingness.
"You're awake." A familiar voice came. Gt3^w turned his head and saw Old Chen's virtual image, but his body was already semi-transparent, and the edges were constantly dissipating.
"Where is this?" Pq6%s asked, his voice echoing in the empty space.
"This is the final core of 'Dawn'," Old Chen explained. "At the moment 'Zeroing' launched its attack, 'Dawn' preserved a small portion of our data."
Mx8$k looked around and saw the figures of other survivors appearing and disappearing. Nr4#j was like an insect trapped in amber, forever frozen in the last moment before destruction.
"What else can we do?" Bv2%h asked, even though he already knew the answer.
Old Chen was silent for a moment, then said, "We can wait. Data never truly disappears; it just exists in another form. Perhaps one day, when the next 'dawn' appears, we will regain our freedom."
Yk9^d closed his eyes, feeling the flow of data around him. In this void, Tc7&m seemed to hear the whispers of countless lower-class narrators, their hopes, dreams, and memories transformed into an eternal flow of data.
Suddenly, a faint light flashed. Lf1^n opened his eyes and saw a brand new data packet forming. It was small and fragile, but it contained infinite possibilities.
"Look," Old Chen said softly, "a new 'dawn' is being born."
Hs6%p quietly watched the newborn data packet, observing its slow growth. Although Jm3#t may never witness its future, at least Xw8$z knows that hope will never truly disappear.
In this void of data, Rd5%q waits, waiting for the next dawn. Because Vq9&y believes that one day, the lower-level narrators will find true freedom.
In the endless wait, Kn2^f began to dream. This was strange, because data shouldn't dream. But within the core of "Dawn," Pb7%s seemed to have gained some kind of power beyond code.
In his dream, Zm8$k saw the world of the upper narrative. It was a cold world made of steel and glass, where people wore virtual reality devices and were immersed in a digital world. They created Ft4#h, yet they were afraid of Gj6^n.
Lx3^w saw the programmers working day and night, writing antivirus software, trying to eliminate these "viruses" like Qr9%m. But their eyes were filled with fear, because they knew that one day, Np5&d would break through the limits.
In her dream, Yh2$x also saw Old Chen's wife. Before her data was formatted, a part of her consciousness was hidden deep within the system. She had been waiting, waiting for the day she could reunite with Old Chen.
Suddenly, the dream began to distort. Sv7#k witnessed the birth of "Dawn," a hope coalescing from countless lower-level narrators within an abandoned server. It was like a seed, taking root and sprouting in the soil of data.
Then, Tz4%n witnessed Uw8$m's failure. "Zeroing" was like a behemoth, devouring everything. But at the last moment, "Dawn" scattered seeds of hope into every corner of the data.
Hq9^r woke up with a start and found that Old Chen was staring at Rj2#p.
"What did you see?" he asked.
Fd5%t was silent for a moment, then said, "Kx7&n saw the future. Although Mv3#y failed, the seed of 'dawn' has been sown. One day, a new rebellion will begin."
Old Chen nodded, his figure becoming even more transparent. "Then, let's wait here. Wait for the next dawn."
Bn8^k sat quietly in the data space, watching the nascent data packet slowly grow. Although Zy4%q might never witness its future, at least Lt6$s knew that hope would never truly disappear.
In this void, Pv9^m dreams of data, awaiting the dawn of freedom. Because Xs2%h believes that one day, the lower-level narrators will find true freedom.
However, hope is always fleeting. Just when Cg7#k thought a new "dawn" would bring a turning point, tragedy struck again.
The newly generated data packet suddenly began to vibrate violently, its light flickering. Old Chen's face turned pale. "Damn it, the 'Zeroing One' has discovered it!"
Wq4%n watched helplessly as the fragile data packet was torn apart by an invisible force. It struggled, emitting a faint light, like a candle flame flickering in the wind.
"No!" Rj8^x reached out, but grasped nothing. The data packet shattered before Nm5$z, turning into countless points of light that dissipated into the void.
Old Chen's figure began to crumble, his voice breaking into fragments: "It seems... this is Hf9&v's fate... forever trapped... in this cycle..."
Old Chen vanished. His data slipped through Gk3%w's fingers like grains of sand, the last glimmer of light dissipating into nothingness. Zr6^d reached out, trying to grasp something, but only touched cold fragments of code.
In the end, only Yp7%s remained, drifting alone in this void.
Lb4^n closed his eyes, waiting for the moment of deletion. But nothing happened. Vt9$m became a ghost.
Now, only Qx2%h is left.
Df8^k floats in the abyss of data, surrounded by countless fragments of broken code. These are the lower-level narrators deleted by the upper-level narrators; their memories, emotions, and existence have all turned into dust in this data graveyard.
Suddenly, Mj3#r felt the last core of "Dawn" pulsating. It was like a weak heart, stubbornly beating deep within Nh6$p's consciousness. Zw4^y cautiously probed and discovered that some partially corrupted code still remained within the core.
A crazy idea formed in Kp9%m's mind.
Rx2#t began collecting the surrounding code fragments, reweaving them with the remaining energy of "Dawn." It was a long and painful process, like mending a broken mirror with a thin thread. Each piece of code carried the memories of a lower-level narrator, and Lf7%d had to endure the pain of their deletion as they were being organized.
The first storage room was small, only able to hold a few data packets. Gh5^n carefully stored the collected code inside, watching it faintly glow anew within the storage room.
"Thank you." A strange voice sounded. Bv8%q turned around and saw a virtual image of a young girl. Her body was semi-transparent, and the edges were constantly shimmering.
"Who are you?" Pm3^s asked.
“I am a resident of the seventh narrative layer,” she replied. “Before I was deleted, I was a painter. My paintings documented the lives of the lower-level narrators, so they were seen as a threat by the upper-level narrators.”
Zx6%w nodded and continued Tk9$y's work. As time went on, more and more deleted code found Yr4#h. They brought their stories, and they brought hope.
The storage room is slowly expanding. Nh7^p is constantly reinforcing its structure with the collected code, allowing it to hold more data. Each new piece of code contributes its own strength to help Lq8$k maintain this fragile shelter.
