Chapter 8 Reconnaissance of the Enemy
Hatchery, the most basic form of the Zerg's headquarters, is a breeding ground for producing and hatching larvae, and also the Zerg's gene library.
Huge, hard bone spikes rose from around this large creature, piercing the thin membrane of its cocoon and revealing the grotesque hatchery. Several larvae crawled in and out of the interconnected fleshy tunnels from time to time, but inside the hatchery, most of the larvae were kept in the intricate underground biological network.
Of course, wherever there is an incubation site, there will naturally be fungal mats.
Grayish slime, or rather, aggregates of various microorganisms, was discharged from the hatchery's passageways and climbed onto the nearby corn clumps.
The same terrifying adaptability as the Tyranids was on full display at this moment. The crops covered by the fungal carpet, as well as the various insects and small animals between the crops and the soil, were quickly digested and dissolved, turning into a continuous stream of fungal carpet and nutrients, which were then transported to the hill-like hatchery.
There's probably no hope for a harvest in this area now. I guess we'll have to send people to seal off the area again. Rhodes smiled bitterly, but from the moment he ordered the worker bees to mutate into hatcheries, there was no turning back.
Rather than losing this agricultural planet and plunging the entire merchant ronin dynasty into crisis, he was willing to take the gamble.
Although I seemed to be asleep at the time, the group of state priests and the rituals next to the saint's remains proved that I was fine, so this system probably wasn't some kind of crazy thing created by some blue subspace soft creature.
In addition, Rhodes was pleasantly surprised to find that with the production, transformation, and transportation of biomass and nutrients by the fungal mat, he could hatch alien insects directly from the hatchery without consuming the general energy in the system.
Newly hatched Zerglings emerged from the ground near the hatchery, excitedly hopping around it. While directing the Zerglings to continue hatching, Rhodes sent overlords to scout the area near the anti-aircraft guns.
Countless fine nerve fibers float on their drooping appendages, constantly emitting weak psionic pulses to the surroundings and collecting the information into their highly developed nervous system.
A swarm of Queen Insects flew toward the position where the anti-aircraft guns were located.
"What are those things?" Near the Governor's Mansion on Planet Esperan, the Chaos Cultist responsible for guarding the No. 1 anti-aircraft gun looked up and saw huge "balloons" drifting from afar toward the location of the anti-aircraft gun in the vast sky.
"That's... the creature that appeared near the launch port a few days ago? Or is it a trial sent by the Dark Prince?" A fanatic's voice trembled with extreme excitement, drool dripping from the corner of his mouth, his eyes flashing with a morbid frenzy.
"Open fire! Sacrifice their flesh and blood to this great arrival! Not a single fly can escape our sight; we will appease the gods with their cries!" another fanatic roared hysterically, brandishing a rapidly spinning chainsaw sword.
Around the anti-aircraft guns, small secondary guns began to slowly move, adjust their angles, and aim at the Ohmu flying high in the sky.
The over ten-meter-tall Queen Beetle, judging from its size, should be the best target for anti-aircraft fire, but the reality seems to be somewhat different.
With a loud bang, a bullet exploded on the right side of one of the Queen Insects' bodies. The Queen Insect's massive floating body was also swayed by the blast, and then continued to drift towards the anti-aircraft gun.
Before being incorporated into the Zerg swarm, the Overlord was originally called the Percy Behemoth, and the most famous feature of this creature that can survive in outer space is the incredibly thick carapace covering its body.
Even anti-aircraft guns capable of turning the airspace into a no-fly zone would need to fire several shots to shoot down a single Queen, let alone when there is more than one Queen above.
"Keep firing, let each of them hear the wonderful sound of their own internal organs exploding!"
Another barrage of artillery fire finally broke through the bombardment of the Queen Insects. With a mournful cry, she plummeted from the sky with her massive body, crashing heavily to the ground.
Rhodes continued to command the swarm of Overlords to advance. He had no expectation that they would return alive. As long as they could scout out information about the rebels near the anti-aircraft guns, it would buy him and the swarm valuable time for their attack.
The last Ohmu was hit by the cannon and its air sac was destroyed. It fell into one of the giant cannons, hitting two unfortunate rebels in the process. Several heretical fanatics rushed to the spot where the Ohmu had fallen, ready to admire their spoils of war.
However, Rhodes also successfully gathered information about the surrounding rebel forces.
There were a total of three anti-aircraft guns near the governor's residence in Esperan, each guarded by dozens of armed rebels, who were equipped with standard bolt pistols and rifles, as well as chainsaw swords and laser rifles.
After thinking it over in his mind, Rod realized the problem.
That day, when he was dealing with a dozen or so rebels, he lost nearly a quarter of his Zerglings, even though the enemy was caught off guard and surrounded by Zerglings in a narrow corridor.
While zebra gnats are certainly capable of dealing damage, their defense is practically nonexistent, making them a classic example of low-defense, high-attack units.
If they were allowed to charge through the anti-aircraft guns' firing lines, the losses could be several times or even dozens of times greater.
Rhodes simply cannot sustain such high battle losses relying solely on biomass provided by crops near the insect hive, even considering the universal energy from his unused system.
As for the Queen... by the time they slowly crawl to the front line, the planet will probably have to pay its next eleventh tax. He can't just spread the creep directly to the core of the planet, as that would not only be time-consuming but might also cause trouble for the Tribunal and the Ministry of Justice.
Since dogs won't work, let's try some other types of troops.
Rhodes, sitting in his seat, opened the system panel in his mind once again.
"What the hell? You're telling me that upgrading to a Tier 2 nest costs so much resources?" When Rhodes saw the cost of transforming the hatchery into a Tier 2 nest, he almost shouted out the six-figure sum of 100,000.
Fortunately, Rhodes has now returned to his private quarters on the flagship, where he is all alone in the vast space and no one else can hear him.
After calming down for a while, Rhodes could understand the cost. Unlike the Terran and Protoss, whose costs were spread across each unit, the Zerg could unlock the corresponding genetic lock on each larva once the corresponding building was unlocked.
In other words, as long as the corresponding building is available, all the larvae can mutate rapidly and assemble a corresponding army in a short period of time.
With upgrading the base no longer an option, Rhodes could only turn his attention to the Zerg structures that were currently unlockable.
A nest of exploding insects? Or a cockroach greenhouse?
"It's such a tough choice," Rod said, pursing his lips, before choosing the latter without hesitation.
