Chapter 51 STC that can create STC
The STC that Rhodes mentioned, which can produce STCs, is actually the most basic Terran building unit in StarCraft: the Command Center.
As the core hub of the entire Terran base operation, the Command Center, while lacking the near-omnipotent biological reproduction capabilities of the Zerg Hatchery or the Protoss Nexus's magical technology of teleportation, possesses a function that is practically perfect in the current situation: as long as mineral resources are continuously supplied, it can produce brand-new SCV space engineering vehicles at a steady rate, one after another.
For Mordax, who had been tormented for two hundred years by the demon of obfuscation, the electronic ghost, and all sorts of data pollution, this was nothing short of a gift from the god of machines.
Rhodes's own plans went much further. As the technology tree gradually unlocked, templates for advanced buildings like barracks, heavy factories, armories, and starports could be developed in sequence. At that point, he wouldn't even need to expend much extra resources himself. He could simply engage in trade cooperation with these mechanical priests, who were fanatical about STC, under the guise of "testing new STC products." Nine times out of ten, they would use their own money to prioritize investing Mordax's high-quality mineral resources in the production of those more advanced buildings.
After all, in the doctrines of the Mechanicus, every STC template is a sacred legacy left to mankind by the god of machines, and any testing and verification work related to it is incredibly attractive.
Thinking of this, Rhodes almost burst out laughing.
After forwarding Rhodes's words verbatim to the Forging Director via an encrypted data link, Casal waited a full ten seconds before receiving a reply. For a high-ranking mechanical priest whose brain had been almost entirely replaced by logic processing units, leaving only a few small patches of gray matter, a silence of ten seconds meant that the Forging Director was using the highest privileges to access Mordax's entire database, spending the equivalent of several hours for an ordinary human to perform cross-validation and risk assessment.
The final instruction returned was a short binary code, which, translated into Gothic, means: Test approved, full cooperation.
When Casal informed Rhodes of the result, the heat dissipation grid on the side of his metal cheek was opening and closing at a frequency that Rhodes had never seen before. If this was how the mechanical priest expressed his excitement, then Casal was probably about to overload with excitement.
Things were progressing faster than Rod had anticipated.
The Mechanicus of Mordax are never ambiguous when it comes to execution; in fact, this is true of almost every Forgeworld. After Rhodes provided the construction requirements for the command center, Casal mobilized all the raw materials needed for the first phase of construction in less than six standard hours. Large quantities of refined ore, industrial-grade ceramic steel sheets, high-purity conductor cables, and various basic components were continuously transported by convoy to the designated construction site.
The SCV that saved the Thinker had also arrived, and at a speed visible to the naked eye, the first command center rose from a cleared industrial platform on the surface of Mordax.
The entire building has a heavy square base and dome structure, with its outer shell covered by a layer of shiny ablation reactive armor. The surface is densely covered with sensor arrays and communication antennas, and the ring of observation windows on the top command tower is also lit with operation indicator lights.
Four massive ventral propulsion engine nozzles are installed beneath the building. Although they are in standby mode when the building is on the ground, the diameter of those dark nozzles is enough to convince anyone that the building could lift off the ground and take off if necessary.
As the first brand-new SCV slowly rolled out of the production gate on the side of the command center, a burst of exclamations, consisting of static, erupted from the crowd of onlookers.
Then came the second, the third, and the fourth.
At regular intervals, a brand-new SCV would emerge from the gate, its gray-blue paint standing out against the greyish-yellow sky of Mordax. The power drill on the left arm and the drive tool pliers on the right arm would alternately operate during the factory self-test, emitting short, mechanical whirring sounds. Subsequently, the second and third command centers were also completed, and SCV production began to increase exponentially.
The fuel thrusters of these newly manufactured SCVs spewed pale blue exhaust flames as they carried the operators in the cockpits into the air, skimming over the surface of Mordax, which was covered with industrial waste and acidic deposits, and speeding toward the foundry cities scattered throughout the planet.
In the Seventh Forging City, a Thinker had been parasitized by an electronic ghost for nearly eighty years. Its main display panel would occasionally flash with a distorted human face, accompanied by a piercing static shriek. The SCV dispatched there rummaged through the ritual materials provided by the blacksmiths, finally selecting a well-sealed can of high-purity holy oil and a brass gear engraved with exorcising binary runes. It used pliers to unscrew a maintenance panel on the Thinker's side, poured the entire can of holy oil into the main cooling circulation pipes, then wedged the brass gear into a noticeably loose logic module slot, gently tapping it twice with a drill to secure it. Two minutes later, the eerie face screamed and vanished from the screen, never to be seen again.
The situation in the next forging city is even more troublesome. The thinkers here are not only infected by the Code Demon, but also have a third of their cooling system blocked due to long-term lack of maintenance, and their core temperature is far beyond the safety threshold.
Two SCVs worked in tandem. One used a drill to unclog the blocked cooling pipes one by one, pouring in ritual cooling fluid provided by the blacksmiths to lower the temperature. The other opened the main maintenance hatch on the Thinker's back, wrapping a roll of purification prayer paper soaked in holy oil around the scorching central data fiber optic cable. At the same time, it precisely removed several auxiliary storage chips that had become completely blackened and wriggling with pliers, replacing them with replacements the blacksmiths had rummaged through the spare parts warehouse. The entire process lasted nearly two hours. During this time, the Thinker's screen flickered dozens of times, but eventually stabilized, with the core temperature returning to normal. Its computing efficiency was even higher than the factory specifications recorded in the archives.
Meanwhile, in the distant 21st Forging City, a lone SCV arrived to find three production lines nearly paralyzed by mutated data ethereal energy. These contaminated lines were connected by a data bus, and the ethereal contamination spread in a closed vicious cycle along the bus, causing the nearby production lines to receive completely distorted instructions. One ammunition production line even received the instruction code "manufacture a warlike Titan," almost sending the entire line flying.
The SCV team sent there spent nearly three hours disassembling and inspecting each of the sixteen sub-modules around the three production lines. They used holy oil provided by the mechanical priest to seal each interface against corrosion, wrapped the three data buses most severely contaminated by the mutated data spirit with purification prayer paper rolls, and finally replaced the outer shell of the industrial production lines to restore them to normal.
These SCV messages, of course, also brought some minor troubles to these mechanical priests. For example, an SCV operator reported to him via communicator that a crazy, heretical innovator was trying to disassemble every part of the SCV for research.
