Tokyo: My obsession with China led me to become the king of Japanese entertainment.
Chapter 41 What is performance art?
"It must have been quite an ordeal to come to your office," Jun Sakurada remarked casually after closing the door to Hideaki Takizawa's office.
"It's not easy to see any of our traditional Japanese politeness and virtues in your Sakurada-sama," Takizawa Hideaki retorted without turning his head.
He realized that this kid completely lacked any of the traditional Japanese way of dealing with people. He was straightforward, sharp, and used the most offensive way of dealing with people to achieve the highest efficiency.
They showed absolutely no respect for their seniors.
But for some reason, facing such a domineering young man, Hideaki Takizawa was unable to muster any lasting anger.
Thinking about it carefully... perhaps it's because this kid is really capable of getting things done?
"Come on, you internet veteran, take a look at our soon-to-be-launched website. You should create your own page about it someday!"
Hideaki Takizawa pointed smugly at Jun Sakurada's computer screen, which displayed a website yet to be officially launched called ISLAND TV.
Of course, it couldn't have been written by Hideaki Takizawa himself; he didn't have that ability. But it was indeed through his efforts that this internet project was successfully initiated within Johnny & Associates.
Hideaki Takizawa is a reformist. Regardless of whether Jun Sakurada appears or not, he will work hard to reform Johnny's Entertainment's internationalization and streaming during this period.
And ISLAND TV is a crucial part of this streaming process.
"Look, just by registering as a member, you can see the personal information and talent showcases of hundreds of individual Juniors and eleven Junior groups here. What a direct and intuitive exposure!"
"Also, Jr. can upload their self-made projects here, such as talent shows, singing and dancing, etc. As long as they are reported and approved, they can be uploaded here!"
"From now on, those fledgling young Jrs will no longer lack basic exposure!"
Hideaki Takizawa seemed rather smug.
At least in his view, this was indeed an unprecedented feat for Johnny's, a great attempt at streaming.
"Yes, yes, yes... It's great, is that alright..." Jun Sakurada muttered as he leaned closer to the computer screen and glanced at it casually.
He considered his main job to be game development, and website design and development were not his expertise, so he originally just planned to go through the motions, take a look, and say a few words of praise to satisfy Zhongdeng's ego.
But even with such a casual glance, his gaze gradually froze after he saw the content on the website.
Hideaki Takizawa watched as Jun Sakurada's attitude shifted from perfunctory to surprised, then to bewildered. He watched as Jun went from glancing at the screen casually to slowly approaching it, and finally picking up the mouse himself, opening one subpage after another and then closing them.
His expression shifted from shock to confusion, then to a relieved smile. Finally, he released the mouse and clapped his hands from the bottom of his heart: "That's amazing, President Takizawa."
"Speak like a human!" Hideaki Takizawa sensed something was wrong.
"There are no personalized recommendations; the recommended slots are arranged entirely according to the posting time. However, the upload rights for videos are controlled by your operations team, who can completely manipulate the upload order."
"There are no trending lists or other content that can directly reflect a Jr's popularity, so fans can only search from the beginning in chronological order."
"You don't even have a vertical category. Don't you know how to separate singing, dancing, TV show production, and crosstalk, and give each of them its own sub-section?"
"Most importantly, you don't even do the most basic things like following and saving, does that mean fans have to start searching from scratch every time they want to follow a particular Junior?"
"To see website design concepts that wouldn't have been considered impressive in 2004 on the official website of an entertainment company with a revenue of hundreds of billions of yen in 2019 is simply top-notch performance art!"
Jun Sakurada's face was full of sincere admiration.
In fact, Jun Sakurada could also see that Hideaki Takizawa insisted on doing it this way mainly in order to pursue fairness and prevent the Matthew effect from causing new Jrs to be left without exposure.
But when it comes to execution, it's practically a performance art of cutting off the head when it hurts and the feet when it hurts.
It's important to understand that even websites from 2004 certainly couldn't do personalized recommendations, but many were already implementing things like vertical categorization.
To be honest, in the world today, perhaps only the Japanese, with their information cocoons and their ability to shift blame, could pull off something like this.
If this were in China... he couldn't imagine why such a website would have to undergo company review.
For a fleeting moment, Hideaki Takizawa genuinely wanted to slap Jun Sakurada across the face to vent his anger.
But when I thought about how this face was also an extremely important asset of the firm, I could only force myself to endure it.
Takizawa wanted to argue that this design was for fairness, so that all Jrs could have equal exposure opportunities.
But then he thought about how the video upload time wasn't really up to those kids, and how a single misstep by the operators could drastically reduce a video's exposure. So he faltered again.
"Tell me, how should it be changed?" After a long silence, when Takizawa finally spoke, his tone was extremely strained.
"No way, this is a work of art—"
"Just change it when I tell you to!"
Seeing that Takizawa Hideaki seemed genuinely willing to correct his mistakes, Sakurada Jun finally took it a little more seriously.
"I really can't explain it to you in a short time. My personal opinion is to start over, but considering that you have to put this thing out there on March 1st, it's probably too late." Jun Sakurada shook his head.
"Just put this half-finished product up there first. Anyway, the fans have already developed feelings for it because of your torture. It's not a big problem if it's a little troublesome to use. We can fix it slowly if there are any problems."
Johnny's fans are so devoted! They are like filial sons and grandsons who, with only the market of Japan, have generated revenue for Johnny's comparable to the combined revenue of the three major Korean entertainment agencies.
Let them use some outdated websites; they might think they're limited-edition vintage items, something they'll lose every day they use, and they'll be eager to send money to the company.
Hearing that this thing could be used as a makeshift solution, Takizawa Hideaki's expression improved somewhat, but the smugness that Sakurada Jun had shown when he first arrived was nowhere to be seen.
"So you called me here not just to have me review this website, right?" Jun Sakurada asked tentatively.
"Of course not," Hideaki Takizawa said wearily.
"The seniors at V6 are free today, and they should be here by now. Didn't you have something to discuss with them before? You can go talk to them now, but whether you can reach an agreement depends on your abilities."
V6? Sakurada Jun's spirits lifted, and he headed out without a word. Only when he reached the door did he remember something and turn back: "Takizawa-san, aren't you going to listen to it?"
"What am I supposed to hear? Is it some important project?" Perhaps because he was exhausted, Takizawa's tone was unusually impatient.
"It's not a very important project." Jun Sakurada raised one hand, extended two fingers, and made a gesture that could make any Korean man break down.
"It probably involves more than 5,000 rounds of TV broadcasts, more than 50 billion views of fan-created content, a billion views of the original content, and a potential fan base in the nine figures, that's all."
