Chapter 17 The Moon Came for You
Jang Nara didn't press the matter. Having been in the entertainment industry for so many years, she knew best what to ask and what not to ask.
She crouched down, bringing her line of sight to Li Yuexi's.
"What's your name?"
"...Li Yuexi."
"Yuexi," Jang Nara recited, then smiled, "It's a really nice name. Who named you that?"
Grandpa.
"Grandpa was really good at naming things."
Li Yuexi blinked but didn't say anything.
Jang Nara stood up, walked to the long table, and took a small plate with several star-shaped cookies on it. The edges of the cookies were slightly browned, and the surface was sprinkled with colorful sugar granules, which glistened under the warm yellow light.
"Try it." She handed the plate to Li Yuexi. "My sister just baked it yesterday."
Li Yuexi looked at the biscuits, then looked up at Lin Puzhi.
"Eat up," Lin Puzhi said. "Other people's food always tastes the best."
Li Yuexi then reached out and took a piece, taking a small bite.
Then her eyes lit up.
"Is it delicious?" Jang Nara asked expectantly.
Li Yuexi nodded vigorously and stuffed the entire cookie into her mouth.
Its cheeks were bulging, like a hamster hoarding food.
Jang Nara smiled, her eyes crinkling, and gently patted Li Yuexi's head: "Eat slowly, there's still plenty left."
"Jang Nara," Lim Pak-ji said, "you have flour on your face."
"Where?" Jang Nara rubbed her face with the back of her hand, only to get even more flour on it.
"On the other side."
She rubbed against the other side, but still couldn't find the right spot.
Lin Puzhi sighed and said, "Forget it, don't bother wiping it off, it'll just get stained again later anyway."
Jang Nara pulled a tissue from the table, handed it to Lin Puzhi, and chuckled, "Why don't you wipe it for me?"
This "spoiled princess" stood before him with a beaming smile, seemingly letting him do as he pleased.
Lin Puzhi was taken aback, took the tissue, and wiped the powder off her face.
Thanks!
After wiping off the flour, Jang Nara turned around and continued working, almost as if she was fleeing in panic.
The children in the activity room had already noticed Li Yuexi.
A little girl with pigtails ran over, holding up a rabbit-shaped cookie cutter: "Want to make cookies together?"
Li Yuexi looked at the rabbit mold, then at Lin Puzhi.
"Go ahead." Lin Puzhi released her hand.
Li Yuexi hesitated for two seconds, then was pulled away by the little girl with pigtails.
Dean Cui stood at the end of the long table and clapped her hands: "Alright, all the kids who want to make cookies, come over here. Grandma will teach you how."
Several children swarmed around them.
Lin Puzhi leaned against the wall, watching Li Yuexi being surrounded by a group of children as she walked to the table. She was small and squeezed in the middle, only able to see the tabletop by standing on tiptoe.
Jang Nara walked over to him and leaned against the wall as well.
"Is she really your sister?"
"I guess so," Lin Puzhi said. "She's the daughter of my father's second wife."
"Half-siblings?"
"Well, I guess she wished to my father that she wanted an older brother, and my father just mentioned me casually. Then, I don't know how she got my address, she actually took several buses by herself to come find me, and said that I was a Christmas present from Santa Claus."
At the long table, Dean Cui was teaching the children how to knead dough. She divided the pre-rested dough into small pieces, one for each child. The children followed her gestures, flattening the dough and then pressing it into shapes using molds.
Li Yuexi was assigned a star-shaped mold.
She imitated Dean Cui, pressing the mold into the dough and carefully lifting it up. The star shape was slightly crooked, and the edges weren't very neat, but her eyes lit up as she looked at the cookie dough.
"Brother." She held it up and waved it in Lin Puzhi's direction. "Look."
"I saw it," Lin Puzhi said. "It's amazing."
Li Yuexi placed the cookie dough on the baking tray with satisfaction, and then took a new piece of dough.
Seeing this, Jang Nara suddenly laughed.
"What are you laughing at?"
"It's nothing," she said. "I just feel that your sister is quite different from you."
"What's the difference?"
"Your sister, driven by her own desires, was willing to take the bus to see you," Jang Nara tilted her head to look at him, "while you, you seem nice to everyone, but not close to anyone, like..."
She thought for a moment and found a suitable metaphor.
"Like a stray cat, you'll let whoever feeds you pet you, but you won't go home with anyone."
Lin Puzhi did not speak.
Jang Nara didn't continue speaking.
She took a freshly baked cookie from the table and stuffed it into Lin Puzhi's hand.
"You should try my cooking too."
Lin Puzhi took a bite.
The sweetness of butter and sugar melts on the tongue, with a hint of caramelization.
"How is it?"
"good."
"It's alright?" Jang Nara's eyes widened. "I baked three trays before this one turned out to be the best. I gave the other two to my brother as Christmas presents."
"You have an older brother too?"
"yes."
"He..." Lin Puzhi paused for a moment, then asked, "How was he as an older brother?"
"Hmm..." Jang Nara tapped her chin with her index finger, pondering.
"When we were little, we had a good relationship. He often took care of me for my mom and played with me. But now..."
"Have I been mean to you?"
"No, it's that I often prank them."
Perhaps this is the price of growing up. But all these costs are borne by Jang Nara's brother alone.
At the long table, Li Yuexi had already finished the third cookie. This time, the star shape was much neater than the first one, with all five corners pressed clearly. She stared intently at the mold in her hand, her lips pursed into a line, her brows slightly furrowed.
He looked so serious, as if he were completing some amazing work.
The little girl with pigtails came closer to look: "Wow, that's so beautiful! How did you do that?"
"Press slowly," Li Yuexi whispered. "Don't rush."
"Teach me, please."
Li Yuexi nodded, picked up the mold of the little girl with pigtails, and taught her how to apply force step by step.
Lin Puzhi watched from afar, a slight smile curving his lips.
"Your sister is very patient," Jang Nara said.
"Um."
"That's something you have in common."
Lin Puzhi turned to look at her.
"I don't have much patience."
Jang Nara said, "I disagree with that. When you play with those kids, you're never in a hurry."
Lin Puzhi did not speak.
Perhaps it's because he needs to accumulate merit, or perhaps it's because the children in the orphanage, like him, are alone in this unfamiliar world.
Dean Cui's voice came from the other side of the long table: "Alright, everyone, put the cookies you've made on the baking tray, and Grandma will bake them for you."
Lin Puzhi looked at Zhang Nara and asked, "Didn't you say you were going to teach? Why is it all the dean doing all the work?"
Jang Nara looked at him, looked into his eyes, and said, "Because there is also a child here who needs someone to take care of him."
Lin Puzhi was silent for two seconds before asking, "Are you trying to seduce me?"
