Chapter 38 Slaying and Lesser Legendary Resistance

Legendary resistance.

The allure was stubbornly resisted.

The eel-man calamity's body suddenly swelled up, and arcs of electricity surged from the gaps in its scales, actively releasing lightning.

Legendary move: Lightning Burst.

A blue-white light exploded outwards from it in all directions. Cheng Yi had just appeared behind it, and hadn't even had time to thrust out his short sword—

He disappeared.

Cheng Yi didn't have time to teleport, but something even faster surfaced in his life-or-death instincts.

His body twisted in mid-air, like a piece of paper being folded and unfolded. Lightning passed through his silhouette and struck the cave wall behind him, sending shards of rock flying, but not a single piece of his clothing was touched.

Cheng Yi landed beside the calamity, kneeling on one knee with his left hand supporting him on the ground.

Then, he stretched out his right hand, fingers spread, and aimed it at the chest of the calamity.

An invisible hand flew out from the palm and pierced the body of the calamity, piercing something deeper and more abstract—the legendary power that enveloped it, protected it, and made it immune to all control.

Cheng Yi grasped that mysterious feeling and pulled it outwards.

The mana pool emptied instantly.

The feeling of depleted mana made Cheng Yi feel dizzy for a moment.

A scorching power surged back from the thief's hand and flowed into Cheng Yi's body.

A pale golden film appeared on his skin, exactly the same as the one on Calamity's body.

The legendary resistance is now his.

The eel-man's yellowish-brown vertical pupils widened suddenly. It sensed that the protective force had vanished, stolen by the tiny human in black scales before it.

It opened its mouth and let out a sharp screech. It raised its right arm, spread its five fingers, aimed at Cheng Yi, and its palm was filled with blue-white lightning.

Palm Thunder (not true).

Cheng Yi also moved.

He vanished from beside the Eelman Calamity, shadows surged, and the next moment he appeared directly in front of the Eelman Calamity.

The short sword suddenly pierced its open mouth, passing through its throat and exiting from the back of its neck.

The lightning of the Eelman's Calamity flickered at his fingertips and then went out.

Its body jerked suddenly, its right arm drooping down, and the lightning dissipated into the air. Its brownish-red vertical pupils widened, reflecting Cheng Yi's blurry outline.

The elk-man's mouth gaped open, as if trying to scream, but under the influence of the dark mark, it could only let out a silent wail. Blood gushed from its mouth, flowing down the blade.

Cheng Yi released his short sword and took a step back.

The elk-man calamity leaned forward, knelt down, and then fell face down to the ground.

Its body began to glow, and blue-white arcs of electricity emerged from the gaps in its scales.

This was its last struggle before it died.

Arcs of electricity erupted from the gaps in the scales of the eel-man calamity, illuminating the entire cave with blue-white light.

The pale golden light membrane around Cheng Yi flashed, blocking the most violent impact, but his body was still shaken and he took two steps back.

He crouched down, sheathed the short sword, and waited for the arc of electricity to dissipate before standing up.

The cave was filled with a mixture of burnt smells and ozone, which was refreshing (not at all).

Ignats leaned against the cave wall, holding the lute, his golden vertical pupils staring at the still shimmering pale golden light membrane on Cheng Yi's body.

He opened his mouth, then closed it again, finally uttering only one sentence.

"Bahamut above, brother is awesome."

Alice sheathed her longsword, glanced at Cheng Yi, and nodded. She didn't speak, but the meaning of that nod was clear—well done.

Karen walked over and placed a hand on Cheng Yi's shoulder. "How are you?"

"It's alright," Cheng Yi said. He glanced down at the light membrane covering his body; it was already starting to dim.

He pulled the short sword from the mouth of the eel-man Calamity, wiped the blood on its scales, and sheathed it again.

Gregor was still slumped beside the basin, panting heavily.

Erling Hearst came over from the next room, grabbed his shoulder, and pulled him out of the water.

Ignats put away his lute and walked to the body of Calamity.

He crouched down and placed his hand, glowing with a pinkish-purple light, on the mangled head of the eel-man Calamity.

Ignac closed his eyes and spoke after a while.

"This guy's got some brains. There's a cave deep in this bay, their lair. There's also their priest there, they call him the Rainmaker."

"Anything else?" Alice asked.

"Rest first."

Cheng Yi leaned against the cave wall and slowly slid down to sit.

His legs were trembling. His mana pool was as empty as a dry well, and each attempt to draw upon his mana only resulted in a dizzying emptiness.

[Your mana is depleted. Your mana pool will remain at 0/10 for three days.]

Legendary resistance is not a conventional magical effect; he paid a considerable price but also received a substantial reward.

[Secondary Legendary Resistance (Constant): When you are affected by a spell or spell-like effect below a legendary level, you may choose to force a save. This effect can be used once per calendar day. Additionally, you gain an advantage on saving throws against all spells and spell-like effects below a legendary level.]

Although he had lost his magic power, he still had throwing knives and a sword.

Ultimately, magic is merely an aid; the sword in hand and the protection of shadows are the wanderer's fundamental reliance.

Karen pulled a parchment from her pocket, opened it, and inside were several pieces of golden-yellow bread, as if they had just come out of the oven.

"Warm Sun Bread." He handed out a piece of bread to everyone. "Made in my hometown's Magic Bakery."

Cheng Yi took it and took a bite.

Warm Sun Bread

Type: Magical Baking

Quality: Green

Description: Fermented with morning wheat flour and honeycomb, and carefully baked by Master Finn. Consuming this bread immediately restores a small amount of health and mana, and provides continuous resistance to cold environments for the next four hours. The bread will maintain its oven temperature and softness and will not spoil over time.

P.S.: One bite feels like hugging a little sun. — Warm Sun Bakery · Finn

The bread was soft and fluffy, with a sweet taste of honey and cream. After swallowing it, a warm feeling rose in my stomach and slowly spread to my limbs.

Ignac picked up the lute, plucked a string, and began to play a simple, leisurely tune.

Alice finished her bread in a few bites, then hung her shield back on her back. She waited quietly for Ignatius to finish his song.

The music faded into the humid air, and the sound of water droplets became clear again.

"Let's go." She stood up, drew her longsword from its sheath, and examined the blade.

"Stay close to me, don't fall behind."

Cheng Yi stood up and stretched his shoulders. The feeling of emptiness and depletion within him had subsided, but Cheng Yi, who had grown accustomed to the presence of magical power, still felt a sense of discomfort.

Karen hung the emblem back on her chest. Ignacz picked up the lute and walked to the middle of the procession.

The four people exited the cave.

The fog on the sea had mostly dissipated, and moonlight leaked through the gaps in the clouds, falling on the water and breaking into silvery-white spots.

(P.S.: Legendary boss monsters will gain reduced versions of legendary resistances and legendary moves that would normally be available at level 20. However, because these are reduced versions, the secondary legendary resistances are treated as a permanent magical effect. Standard legendary resistances cannot be stolen.)
