Chapter 18

He started thinking about quitting his job.

The update speed of breaking taboos cannot be slowed down now, the security guard's work cannot be neglected to make things difficult for the supervisor, and most importantly, he knows his own physical condition.

He leaned against the wall on the balcony, smoking, watching the flow of people leaving get off work, his eyes squinting from the smoke. Familiar faces from the workshop and warehouse who often handed over work at the security booth saw him and shouted from afar, "Old Yang! You're skipping work to sneak peeks at pretty girls, aren't you?!"

He raised his hand and waved in response.

After everyone left, he watched the setting sun gradually sink and stared blankly at the distant woods for a long time.

Finally, he threw the cigarette butt down the drain, took out his phone and sent a message to his mother: "I haven't been feeling well lately. I can't stop reading, and I'm falling behind at work. I'm thinking of quitting my job."

After a long while, Mom replied, "You now have the ability to choose; you decide for yourself."

Instead of going directly to the supervisor, he asked Lao Liang to meet him at their usual spot the next day. Lao Liang replied with an "OK".

At that moment, a payroll notification popped up, along with a transfer message. Da Tang sent a smiling emoji and a note: "Boss Yang, please check."

Da Tang owed tens of thousands of yuan in online loans to find this job, and after paying off his loans each month, he only had a few hundred yuan left. In his third month, the finance department made a mistake and missed paying his and Yao Guang's salaries. Da Tang complained, and Yao Guang told him, "How much do you need? I still have some here. You can take it and pay me back when you get your salary."

At the time, Da Tang did not ask to borrow money. It wasn't until last month when he urgently needed the money that he borrowed a few hundred from Yao Guang.

Yao Guang said, "When you go out to buy late-night snacks tonight, grab some skewers and beer on your way back. I'll transfer the money to you; I'm craving some."

Da Tang replied, "Received."

After taking a bath, Da Tang returned. As soon as he entered the door, he teased Yao Guang for finally reforming and returning to evil ways. He said that life is only a few decades long, and it's not like he's going to save the world, so why bother?

The two sat down facing each other, drinking and chatting for a long time. Suddenly, Yao Guang said, "I'm planning to resign."

Da Tang paused, picked up his wine cup, and took a sip: "When?"

"I'll bring it up with the supervisor in the next couple of days." Yao Guang chewed on a peanut. "You don't seem surprised?"

"What's so surprising? Anyone could have predicted this after your book was signed." Da Tang then asked, "What kind of job are you planning to look for?"

Yao Guang said he wouldn't look for anyone for the time being and would rest for a while. Da Tang didn't ask any further questions and said self-deprecatingly, "Two security guards living in the same dormitory, one makes money by writing books and pays off loans every month. The difference between people is like that between a wild boar and a lynx."

The next morning, Yao Guang got up and went out. His supervisor brushed past him without saying a word, and his colleagues at the gate joked that fishing was his way of going to work.

When they arrived at the riverbank, Lao Liang was already sitting there, having gone home empty-handed. As soon as he saw Yao Guang, he complained, "This is fucking weird. The weather, air pressure, bait spot, and fishing location are all perfect, but there are no fish, or only small krill. Why is that?"

Yao Guang laughed and said, "Isn't that normal? You come fishing every day, the fish would have already blacklisted you."

Old Liang disagreed, declaring that a true angler never comes home empty-handed. After arguing for half an hour, Yao Guang suddenly said, "When you start fishing, you should first adjust your float to be level with the water, then replace your Ise-ni with a gold-sleeved one. If you don't get a bite when bottom fishing, try float fishing; if fishing in the shade doesn't work, try fishing in the sun. Sticking to one spot won't get you any fish."

Old Liang snorted: "I don't believe you for a second. You just want me to beat the turtle."

Yao Guang smiled and said, "Would you like to have dinner tonight? I'm about to leave."

Old Liang paused in his baiting motion, looking over with some surprise: "Giving up?"

Yao Guang nodded and said that he used to feel that life was hopeless and he just drifted through each day, but now it's different. He has some ideas in his mind. He's still young and should give it a try.

He wanted to invite Lao Liang to dinner, but Lao Liang refused. He didn't say it explicitly, but Yao Guang could roughly guess what he meant.

We met on the riverbank, and we should part ways on the riverbank as well. Our bond was formed through fishing, and it will last from beginning to end.

The atmosphere was somewhat heavy. Both of them knew that this parting might be the last time they would ever have the chance to meet again.

It was Lao Liang who broke the deadlock: "A change of environment is good. You can do work anytime, as long as you're happy. By the way, how's that book you wrote last time? Did it get accepted?"

Yaoguang said they are still adjusting and plan to recruit from within the organization, but I don't think the chances are high.

Old Liang paused for a moment, then suddenly shouted in a panic, "It's gone under! Good heavens, it actually ambushed this fishing god!"

……

Yao Guang nodded: "No problem."

Back in the dormitory, his night shift colleagues had gone out and hadn't returned yet, and his day shift colleagues hadn't finished their shifts. He was all alone in the dormitory.

After cooking the fish, Yao Guang bought a few bottles of beer and called his supervisor over, saying he had something to ask him in person.

The supervisor realized he had been tricked when he came over, but since he was already there, he couldn't refuse, so he sat down.

After chatting about both business and personal matters for a while, Yao Guang expressed her desire to resign.

The supervisor reacted similarly to Da Tang, having already anticipated this. The difference was that he advised, "I suggest you reconsider. This job isn't respectable, but at least here, I can ensure you get a salary. What can you do with your eyesight if you leave?"

Yao Guang said he had earned some royalties, without disclosing the specific amount, only saying that it should be around five or six thousand a month. Because this was the only opportunity he could seize to get ahead, he didn't intend to give it up, but he couldn't balance his regular job well, which would make things difficult for his supervisor.

"Don't feel like you're causing me trouble. Everyone makes mistakes, it's not a big deal." The supervisor nodded again. "But five or six thousand a month is indeed not bad... Since you've already decided, then fill out the resignation form in the back office and go through the procedures."

Yao Guang raised a glass of wine, and all his words were contained in that glass.

His supervisor had HR hire a new person to fill his position. After training the new person for a week, his supervisor arranged for him to take annual leave and rest days, totaling half a month. He no longer needed to work and could choose to stay or leave as he pleased.

He took this time to see a doctor, but there is still no good solution. However, the good news is that there has been a breakthrough, and his condition should improve in the next few years.

This news put him in a great mood, and he contacted his old friends who were scattered around the area, and they had a nice get-together.

After his supervisor notified him that his resignation was officially completed, he carefully washed his work clothes, folded the security guard uniform neatly for the first time, put the hat on top, and returned it to HR.

The smog has dissipated, and dawn has broken. Through thick and thin, thank you for always being there for me.

Just as I stepped out of the factory gate with my luggage, my phone suddenly rang.

Lin Ke sent a message: "Congratulations! The White Net Annual New Star Selection is coming soon! Our Breakthrough has been shortlisted!"
