Chapter 62 Silver Bear
Chapter 62 Silver Bear
The awards ceremony was held on February 17th.
Su Yu started preparing at 2 p.m. The suit was made half a month in advance; it was dark blue and made of wool.
The tailor was an elderly Italian man whose Los Angeles studio was tucked away in an alley in Beverly Hills.
He took more than twenty measurements on Su Yu, scribbled and drew on paper, and the final product was ready. When Su Yu put it on and stood in front of the mirror, David whistled behind him.
At 1.785 meters tall, the suit looked impeccable on him, with perfect shoulder lines and a well-defined waistline.
Su Yu tied his tie, a deep red one, a birthday gift from Liu Yifei. He pushed the tie up a bit in front of the mirror, took a step back, turned to the side, and checked himself from head to toe.
David stood to the side, looking at Su Yu's outfit, his envy impossible to hide.
He looked down at his round belly; he could barely button up his suit jacket, but it was a bit too tight.
He sighed, his tone filled with a resigned helplessness: "I really hate people like you, you look handsome in anything."
Su Yu glanced back at him: "If you lose some weight, you'll be fine."
David patted his belly, his expression like that of someone petting a long-time dog, reluctant to let go.
He hugged it, and the belly bounced back from his hands. He laughed, "Then forget it. I raised it bit by bit, I can't bear to part with it."
Su Yu was close: he almost choked to death.
Donnie came out of the next room. He was wearing a dark gray suit and a silver-gray tie. He was five centimeters shorter than me but was wearing platform shoes.
He stood in front of Su Yu, adjusted his cuffs, and couldn't stop smiling: "Director, with your figure and looks, it's a pity you're not an actor."
"Being a director earns more money than being an actor."
Donnie paused for a moment, then laughed, a very deep laugh.
The three of them left the hotel and got into a car arranged by the organizing committee.
Outside the car window, many police officers were maintaining order on the streets of Berlin. The crowd was dense, and shouts in various languages blended into a noisy cacophony.
Su Yu leaned back in his seat, watching the crowd flash by outside the window. He thought back to the year before last when he and Luo Jin walked the red carpet, but no one recognized them, and the official cameras only gave them a few seconds of screen time.
The red carpet was twice as long as the opening ceremony, with several rows of photographers standing on both sides. The flashes never stopped from the first second Su Yu stepped onto the red carpet.
Su Yu walked at a moderate pace, his left hand in his pocket, occasionally waving to the audience on either side with his right. David walked to his right, his smile clearly practiced. Donnie walked to his left, his back ramrod straight, chin slightly tucked in, his expression serious.
When I reached the middle of the red carpet, a blonde host approached me with a microphone and asked me two questions in English.
Su Yu listened to the gist of the story, and the first thing he said was, "How did you come up with the idea for a movie like 'Buried'? It's so imaginative."
,

He smiled and replied, "I thought of it on the plane."
The second one is: "I heard that this movie was filmed in just two weeks."
Su Yu corrected him, "Ten days, even I couldn't quite believe it after filming was finished."
The awards ceremony was held in the main hall of the cinema.
Su Yu sat in the fourth row on the right. To his left was Donnie, and to his right was an unfamiliar middle-aged woman with short blonde hair who looked like a producer. David sat in the row behind.
The awards ceremony for the other categories began first.
Teddy Award, Crystal Bear Award, International Critics' Award, Humanitarian Spirit Award: the awards are given out one by one, like products on an assembly line, packaged and sent out.
Then came the Best First Feature Film award for "Spicy Dancer," but not for "Buried."
The Silver Bear for Best Original Score went to *Halem*, but not to *Buried*.
The Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution was awarded to the crew of "The Spy Who Loved Me".
Su Yu saw that the director's eyes were red when he went on stage, and his voice was a little choked up when he gave his speech.
Su Yu leaned back in his chair, thinking to himself, "One less competitor."
"Silver Bear for Best Actress..." The presenter on stage opened the envelope and read out a name, "Nina Hoss, Yera."
A German actress came on stage; she was blonde, tall, and wore a dark green dress. She spoke a few words in German.
Su Yu didn't understand, but he saw Yu Nan's expression change on the other side of the aisle. It went from relaxed to tense, with her facial muscles tightening and her lips pressed into a line.
"Relax," Su Yu said softly.
Donnie didn't say anything, he just nodded silently.
A new member of the jury came on stage, a white man with gray hair and a sharp suit. He opened the envelope and read a long string of English into the microphone. Su Yu only caught the last sentence: "Silver Bear for Best Actor, Julio Chávez, for 'Others'."
Donnie's body felt as if something had been drained from within; he slumped down, his shoulders drooping, and he leaned back in his chair.
He closed his eyes, his breathing becoming heavier than before. David sighed softly behind him, which Su Yu heard.
"There will be other opportunities in the future," Su Yu said softly.
Downey opened his eyes, a slight smile playing on his lips as a response. He straightened his tie, composed himself, and said softly, "Being nominated is already the biggest encouragement for me; I'm the lead actor, after all."
Su Yu didn't say anything more, and the person presenting the award on stage changed again.
This time, the woman was of Chinese descent, wearing a black cheongsam, her hair styled in an updo, exuding elegance.
Su Yu recognized her: Nansun Shi, a legendary producer in the Hong Kong film industry.
She stood in front of the microphone with a dignified smile, said a few words in English, then lowered her head to open the envelope, took out the card, paused on it for a moment, then looked up and scanned the audience as if looking for someone.
"Silver Bear for Best Director..." Her voice came from the speakers, switching seamlessly between English and Chinese. The next sentence was in Chinese, "Su Yu, *Buried*. Congratulations."
Su Yu's mind went blank for a moment, but Donnie was the first to react. He turned around abruptly and hugged him tightly, so tightly that Su Yu's ribs ached. He shouted in Su Yu's ear, "Director! You got it."
.
David let out a strange cry from behind. After being released by Donnie, Su Yu stood up, unbuttoned one of his suit jacket buttons, took a deep breath, and strode towards the stage.
The spotlight followed him, and people applauded and stood up to shake his hand. He saw Han Sanping sitting in the tenth row or so, and smiled and gave him a thumbs up.
He saw Fan Binbin clapping on the other side, his smile genuine. He saw Liang Jiahui and Li Yu sitting together; Li Yu nodded slightly, and Liang Jiahui stood up, hugged Su Yu, and patted him on the shoulder.
Su Yu walked onto the stage, steadied himself, and stepped onto the last step, heading towards Shi Nansheng.
Nansun Shi handed him the silver bear trophy. The trophy was small, with a silver bear standing on a square base, gleaming under the lights.
Su Yu took it and held it in his hand. It was cool to the touch and a bit heavier than the Golden Bear.
"Congratulations." Shi Nansheng smiled sincerely and praised you again in Chinese, "This is your second time winning the Berlin Prize."
.
"Thank you, Sister Shi, for the award."
Su Yu held the trophy and walked to the microphone. The seats below were dark, and he couldn't see people's faces clearly, but he knew that there were people he knew and people he didn't know among them.
He glanced down at the silver bear in his hand and remembered standing on the same stage two years ago, holding a golden bear.
That time he thanked his roommates and the school; this time he didn't want to say those things.
"Thank you." He paused, and the audience fell silent for a moment.
"This time it wasn't a smaller one at all. It's a pity I only got silver; maybe the organizing committee is telling me that I still need to work harder."
.
The audience was silent for less than a second before laughter erupted from every corner.
Su Yu and the others' laughter subsided slightly, and they spoke again.
"Thank you Berlin for giving me this silver bear again. This is my second time in Berlin, and my first time bringing a feature film to compete for awards. Actually, I really wanted to change its color, like to gold."
The audience laughed again, this time even louder, and someone whistled.
"Think about it, I only spent ten days making this movie and I got this silver bear. That should be considered a huge success, so I'm satisfied."
He glanced down at the silver bear in his hand, then raised it a little higher. "I'm still young, not even twenty-two yet; next time I'll try to get a bigger gold bear."
Applause surged from all directions, drowning out his voice. He waited a moment.
"Finally, thank you to my actor Downey. I think he's one of the best actors in Hollywood, thank you for your wonderful performance. Thank you David, my partner. Thank you Lionsgate. Thank you to my alma mater, Beijing Film Academy. Thank you to my parents and my online friends, goodnight, Berlin."
He raised the trophy, bowed, and turned to leave the stage; the spotlight quickly followed someone else.
As Su Yu walked back to his seat, Donnie stood up and took a few steps to greet him. The two hugged in the aisle.
Su Yu handed him the Silver Bear trophy, which he took and looked at several times.
David leaned over from behind, patted Su Yu on the shoulder, his eyes a little red: "Boss, when you were saying those things just now, I was clenching my fists so you wouldn't forget your lines."
Su Yu turned around and smiled, "Have you ever seen me forget my lines?"
The awards ceremony continued, and the Golden Bear for Best Film was awarded to "Tuya's Marriage".
Wang Quan'an and Yu Nan went on stage together to receive their awards, and Su Yu clapped enthusiastically from the audience.
He knew in his past life that this film would win the Golden Bear, but seeing it with his own eyes felt different. He couldn't tell if it was envy or regret: his smile was genuine because it was an award won by a Chinese film.
This marks the fourth time a Chinese film has won this award, following "Red Sorghum" in 1988, "Woman Sesame Oil Maker" in 1993, and "The Wedding Banquet".
When Yu Nan went on stage, her eyes were red. Wang Quan'an's first sentence in his acceptance speech in Hebei dialect was "Thank you to the judges, thank you Berlin," and the second sentence was "Thank you Yu Nan for bringing this character to life."
The applause from the audience was very enthusiastic.
The awards ceremony was over, the spotlights above the stage were turned off one by one, and the crowd began to disperse.
Su Yu stood up from his seat with the Silver Bear trophy in his hand, and turned around to see Han Sanping had already walked up to him.
Han Sanping looked at the Silver Bear trophy in Su Yu's hand, reached out and patted him on the shoulder, "Not bad, a silver bear is still a bear. Next time, try for the gold one."
Su Yu smiled and nodded. "Haha, okay."
Downey walked over, his disappointment mostly gone. He walked out side by side with Su Yu, with David following behind. The three of them walked through the corridor of the movie palace, which was full of people, their voices, laughter, and footsteps all mixed together.
Downey, walking to Su Yu's left, suddenly said, "Director, when is your next film? I'll reserve my schedule for you. I'll take any role, no matter what it is."
Su Yu glanced at him sideways. Donnie's expression wasn't a joke; he was very serious.
"Didn't we already book 'The Man from Nowhere'? Come over as soon as 'Iron Man' is finished filming, make sure you reserve your schedule for me."
Downey paused for a moment, "Uh, director, I meant an award-contending film."
