Chapter 50: America
December 1st, Beijing Capital International Airport.
Su Ting parked the silver-gray Audi at the departure level, turned off the engine, and didn't get out of the car.
Su Yu took the luggage out of the trunk, and Liu Hao, his assistant, took it and put it on the luggage cart.
Su Ting leaned out of the car window and called out to Su Yu, "Call me when we get there. Stay in a nice hotel. The America District isn't safe, don't go out at night. Liu Hao, keep an eye on him."
Liu Hao pushed the luggage cart, turned around and replied, "Okay, Sister Su."
Liu Hao was Su Ting's bodyguard and assistant to Su Yu; Su Yu raised his hand above his head and waved it as a farewell.
Su Ting sat in the car watching him disappear behind the automatic doors, then sat for a while longer before starting the car and driving away.
In the waiting room, Su Yu found a corner seat and sat down, placing his laptop bag on his lap.
He opened QQ and saw Liu Yifei's profile picture was lit up. He sent a message: "I'm leaving, going to Los Angeles."
Liu Yifei replied instantly: "Have a safe journey, let me know when you arrive."
Su Yu typed "Okay" and sent it, but then felt it was too cold, so he added, "I'll bring you a gift when I get back."
Liu Yifei sent a smiley face and added, "I want a Hollywood star's autograph."
Su Yu thought for a moment, then asked, "Whose do you want?"
"If you can find a way to get Brad Pitt, I'll be impressed."
Forty minutes before boarding, Su Yu contacted David.
He checked his watch; Los Angeles is sixteen hours behind Beijing time. It was 2 p.m. in Beijing, which was 10 p.m. in Los Angeles.
During the twelve-hour flight, Su Yu sat by the window, Liu Hao sat in the middle, and a chubby American lone agent sat by the aisle.
Su Yu slept for a while, but was woken up by the turbulence of the plane. Looking out the window, he saw that it was pitch black and he had no idea where they had flown.
When the flight attendant served the second meal, Su Yu chose a rice dish with chicken. The rice was overcooked and a bit hard on the surface, and the chicken sauce was on the sweeter side.
He ate half of it, then put the food away, folded the lunchbox, handed it to the flight attendant, covered himself with a blanket, and went back to sleep.
I slept more soundly this time than before, and dreamed of the classroom, his high school classroom, with the countdown to the college entrance exam written on the blackboard.
When we landed, the display screen showed it was 11:30 in Los Angeles time.
He flew for twelve hours, but time seemed to rewind several hours.
Su Yu walked out of the passage and followed the crowd toward the arrival hall.
In his previous life, someone had mentioned the joke that "the air in America is sweet." Su Yu took a deep breath and thought it was similar to the Capital Airport, perhaps even lacking a bit of coal smoke.
I could see the crowd of people waiting to pick up passengers from afar, holding up various signs.
Su Yu glanced around and saw a slightly chubby man holding up an A4 sheet of paper with "SU YU" written on it in marker.
The man looked to be in his thirties, with short brown hair, wearing a dark blue polo shirt with the top two buttons undone, and waving a sign in his hand.
He saw Su Yu looking at him, switch hands to hold up the sign, wave the other hand vigorously, and shout "Su, come here."
........
Su Yu dragged his luggage over, and David first handed him the cards in his hand, then opened his arms and gave him a firm hug.
He hugged her so tightly that Su Yu almost choked on his breath.
After loosening his grip, David took a half step back, looked Su Yu up and down, and said loudly in broken Mandarin, "Hi, welcome to Los Angeles!"
His Mandarin pronunciation sounds like he's punching with his tongue in his mouth, with each word requiring a lot of force.
Su Yu was surprised and asked, "Where did you learn Chinese?"
David said he had hired a Chinese teacher and studied with him for two years.
His expression was proud, like a puppy that had learned to shake hands.
Su Yu asked him why he was studying it, and David said, "To communicate with Eastern clients for work. You're the 10th one."
David started talking non-stop as he helped Su Yu move his suitcase onto the cart.
"Su, Lionsgate has been urging us several times. Seriously, they've sent several emails. They've taken a liking to your script and really love it."
He likes to gesture with his hands when he talks, and he almost hit a passing child.
"You're a genius."
Su Yu smiled, and Liu Hao pushed the luggage cart toward the exit.
.......
After the car got on the highway, Su Yu leaned back in the back seat and looked out the window at the palm trees and blue sky.
Liu Hao sat in the passenger seat, his head tilted to the side as he looked out the window, seemingly looking at something.
"David, I need your help finding a professional lawyer here this time." Su Yu leaned out from the back seat, as if giving instructions on something that couldn't go wrong. "The contract can't have any problems; I've heard that contracts in Hollywood are very complicated."
David, who was driving, glanced at Su Yu in the rearview mirror and his shoulders swayed slightly when he heard this.
"So, you've already decided to sell the scripts for 'Insidious' and 'John Wick'?"
"Let's talk about the collaboration first, and the rest later." Su Yu leaned back in his seat, his tone unhurried, as if chatting with an old friend. "What about the other scripts?"
David changed lanes on the highway, speaking a little faster than before: "Quite a few companies have contacted me. Summit Entertainment, New Line Cinema, and The Weinstein Company. They're interested in several of your horror scripts. They haven't explicitly stated anything about Twilight, but I'm fifty percent sure I can sell it."
He paused, glanced at Su Yu in the rearview mirror, and added, "Fifty percent, that's very good. Hollywood receives thousands of scripts every day, but less than one percent are selected."
Su Yu nodded without replying. Sunlight filtered through the palm trees outside the car window, dappling the seats.
"No rush." Su Yu rolled the window down a little, and the wind blowing in made him squint.
"At worst, we can invest our own money and do it ourselves, then find a company to distribute it. What do you think?"
David nodded rapidly from the driver's seat. "Yes, I've read all the scripts you asked me to register for later. The action choreography for 'John Wick' is fantastic—high concept, high execution. And that house that summons spirits..."
He took one hand off the steering wheel and waved it briefly before putting it back down. "You really should come to Hollywood. You belong here."
Su Yu didn't speak, gazing out the window at Stamonica Beach. The Pacific Ocean was bluer than he'd seen in Sanya, an almost unreal blue.
David rambled on and on, from the history of Lionsgate to gossip about James Wan, from his own career to how his cat liked to steal his breakfast.
Su Yu listened, nodding occasionally and interjecting with a "hmm" or "really?" He discovered that Americans don't need you to speak when they chat; they just need you to be there.
The hotel is a four-star hotel in Santa Monica. There was a bouquet of lilies in the lobby, and the fragrance was so strong it was almost overpowering.
Liu Hao lived next door. David escorted Su Yu to his room and, standing in the hallway, asked if he wanted to go to Hollywood. He said there was a Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, and beautiful female stars there.
Su Yu inserted the room card into the power outlet, and the light came on. He turned to look at David, and a tired smile slowly crept onto his lips.
"No, you can contact Lionsgate now. Tell them I've arrived."
