Reborn, my online friend is the real me.
Chapter 38: Weibo, Awkwardness
In the days that followed, Su Yu began looking for a location for the company.
He browsed through information on more than a dozen office buildings online, printed out a stack of documents, and circled them with a red pen while lying on the table.
Wang Boxue leaned closer to look and read aloud: "Mingguang Bridge, Zhichun Road, Zhongguancun, Xizhimen... Are you choosing a company address or a hot pot restaurant?"
After three days of searching and visiting four different locations, Su Yu finally settled on the Beifa Building at No. 15 Xueyuan South Road in the HD District; this place is less than one kilometer away from Beijing Film Academy.
In early April, the company recruited more than ten new employees, all of whom majored in journalism and communication, including recent graduates and interns.
Su Yu handed these people over to the newly arrived manager, Lin, for "online promotion."
Lin Hao adjusted his glasses and pushed up his frames: "President Su, what's the budget?"
One million.
"enough."
"Also," Su Yu took out a stack of A4 papers from the drawer, which were online promotion plans he had been working on late into the night for the past few days, "These are some methods I've summarized. Take a look and see if they're useful."
Manager Lin took the document and flipped through it. He looked up at Su Yu, a hint of disbelief in his eyes: "Mr. Su, you studied photography?"
"right."
"With your copywriting skills, did you study photography?"
Su Yu smiled. "Making films also requires storytelling, and storytelling requires writing skills; don't you think?"
Manager Lin didn't ask any more questions, closed the plan, and said, "Okay, President Su, I'll take a look at it when I get back."
......
In the days that followed, Shiguang Pictures' publicity team began releasing materials for "Our Times" on various websites, forums, and blogs.
Posters, stills, and trailers were released in waves.
China Film Group also did a great job, distributing promotional materials to most cinemas across the country. The roll-up banners were taller than a person and placed in the most conspicuous positions in the cinema lobbies.
The publicity department also uploaded the music videos for the four songs to the internet; they were actually short clips edited from movie footage.
"A Little Happiness", "Waste", "Slowly Falling in Love with You", and the duet "Little Dimples" sung by Su Yu and Liu Yifei.
After the song was uploaded, the data skyrocketed like a broken car with the accelerator pressed on.
On the first day, it garnered over a million plays. On the second day, it surpassed five million. On the third day, "A Little Happiness" broke into the top ten on major music charts.
The most liked comments were, "Liu Yifei's voice is so beautiful!"
"Please let the movie be released soon!"
"Who sang the last duet? The male voice sounded a bit strained, but it was beautiful."
...
Su Yu's gaze lingered on the screen: blog self-media.
He suddenly remembered something, and tapped his fingers on the screen as if knocking on a door that wasn't closed properly.
Weibo.
In his previous life, he used Weibo for more than a decade, from its initial public beta to its later status as a super app. Weibo changed the way information was disseminated on the entire internet.
Now, he looked at the date in the upper right corner of his phone: April 10, 2006.
Weibo didn't exist yet; Sina Weibo was only launched in 2009, so there were still three years to go.
Su Yu sat up straight, put down his phone, turned on his computer, and typed a few keywords into the search engine.
He flipped through more than a dozen pages and finally found a clue: a person named Zhang Weibao had registered the domain name "Weibo".
A personal website owner holds a dozen or so domain names, which he displays on a simple page with the words "Domain name transfer, price negotiable".
Su Yu picked up the phone on the table and dialed the number listed on the screen.
It rang three times before the other end answered.
The voice was young, with a lazy tone: "Feed."
"Hello, are you Mr. Zhang Weibao?"
"It's me, who is it?"
......
Sunday, April 16th.
When Su Yu came out of the dormitory, Wang Boxue was still asleep, his head covered by the blanket.
Su Yu walked to the school gate and glanced across the street. A taxi was parked on the side of the road, the back door opened, and a girl got out.
She was tall, probably over 1.65 meters. Her skin was so white it seemed to glow, and her hair was past her shoulders, with a few strands blowing in the wind, which she brushed aside.
Dragging a silver-gray suitcase, the wheels made a gurgling sound on the ground.
Su Yu smiled and walked over, taking the suitcase: "Sis, why did you bring so much stuff? Didn't you say you didn't need to bring anything? You can buy it in Beijing."
Su Ting handed him the bag she was holding, shaking her arm and saying, "Mom insisted on giving it to you, go talk to her."
Su Yu carried his suitcase and walked across the street, Su Ting following beside him, looking him up and down. The house Su Yu bought was in Yingtan Garden across the street.
"Your school is smaller than I imagined."
"Xiao Hao, you don't need to go too far to get to class."
"Is the food in the cafeteria good?"
"It's so-so. But the hot pot outside the school is pretty good."
All you ever think about is eating.
Just then, Liu Yifei walked out of the school gate. She was holding a file folder containing the attachments to her graduation thesis that she had just submitted.
She took a few steps, then glanced at the school gate and saw someone. She looked up and saw Su Yu, as well as the beautiful woman next to him.
Liu Yifei slowed her pace, her gaze lingered on the girl for two seconds, then shifted to Su Yu.
Liu Yifei stood at the school gate, wanting to go up and say hello to see who the girl was, but her legs felt like they were nailed to the ground.
Reason told her that she had no relationship with Su Yu, and he had no obligation to report anything to her. But another emotion, an instinct, pushed her forward.
She took a deep breath, turned around, and left.
"Master Li, go to the School of Foreign Languages and pick up Shu Chang." Liu Yifei opened the waiting car door, got in, put the file folder on her lap and hugged it, her voice a few decibels faster than usual.
"Ms. Liu, didn't your mother tell you to go home early?" The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror.
"Let's start with Shu's singing."
......
Fifteen minutes later, Shu Chang opened the car door and got in, holding a cup of milk tea in her hand.
She glanced at Liu Yifei and handed her the milk tea: "What's wrong? You don't look well. Is your mom urging you to go home again?"
"No." Liu Yifei took the milk tea but didn't drink it, holding it in her hand. "We're going to eat near Beijing Normal University today."
Shu Chang was taken aback: "Beijing Normal University? Didn't you say you were going to Dongzhimen to eat grilled fish?"
"I've changed my mind." Liu Yifei turned her head to look out the window, trying to keep her tone calm. "There are a few nice shops on Xingtang Road over there. Didn't you say you wanted to eat at a small restaurant last time?"
Shu Chang stared at her for two seconds, pursed her lips, and didn't expose her.
On the way to pick up Shu Chang, Liu Yifei found Luo Jin's number and typed: "Luo Jin, where is Su Yu now?"
After sending the message, she felt the question was a bit too direct, so she added, "I need to talk to him."
Luo Jin replied instantly: "I don't know. Wait a minute, I'll ask."
......
"Oh dear!" Liu Yifei pulled Shu Chang inside, her voice not loud, but loud enough for those near the window to hear, "Director Su, what are you doing here?"
Su Yu looked up and saw her, paused for a moment, and then smiled.
The smile was natural, without surprise, like bumping into an old friend on the street. Su Yu had known two days ago that Liu Yifei had returned to Beijing; Luo Jing had mentioned over drinks that Liu Yifei had come back early to work on her graduation thesis.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that? What are you doing eating here?"
Liu Yifei stood at the door, holding Shu Chang's hand, with a smile on her face that even she thought was fake: "My mom isn't home today, so Changchang and I are out to eat."
Shu Chang stood behind her, glanced at Su Yu, then at the girl opposite him, and then at Liu Yifei's profile. She didn't say anything, but she already had a decision in mind.
Su Ting put down her chopsticks, looked at Liu Yifei, and recognized her instantly. A smile appeared on her lips: "Xiaoyu, your classmate?"
Xiaoyu, that's what she called him.
Liu Yifei gently pinched Shu Chang's wrist with her fingers, but the smile on her face remained unchanged.
Su Yu smiled, "Ah, yes. Senior sister, Shu Chang, you two can join us. Waiter, bring two more dishes."
Su Ting warmly invited them to sit down, pushing the dishes on the table towards the center. "Are you Xiaoyu's classmates? Come, come, sit down and eat, don't be shy. The stinky mandarin fish at this restaurant is pretty good; we just ordered it."
Liu Yifei pulled Shu Chang to sit down opposite Su Ting.
She stole a glance at Su Ting; she looked even prettier up close. That sour feeling welled up inside her again, but she maintained her polite smile.
Su Ting picked up a piece of fish and asked, "You're Xiaoyu's classmate. How's he doing at school? Has he been misbehaving?"
Your Xiaoyu, it's "your Xiaoyu" again.
Liu Yifei looked up at Su Ting, and the sour feeling in her heart was suddenly replaced by a strange sense of unease.
"Ah, Director Su. He's quite popular at school, but sometimes he's too talkative and doesn't mince words."
Su Ting glanced at Su Yu. "He's had this problem since he was little. When he was a kid, he could get into arguments with people and make them cry, without even knowing what was wrong with him."
Su Yu blushed slightly when his sister brought up old grievances in front of Liu Yifei: "Sis, can you please stop bringing up things from when we were little?"
sister.
Liu Yifei paused for a moment, her hand holding the chopsticks still. "Sister?"
She glanced at Su Ting, then at Su Yu. Sister? Sister!
Su Ting chuckled and patted Su Yu on the back. "Alright, alright, I won't say anymore. You're a big director now, you have to save face."
Liu Yifei lowered her head, staring at the piece of fish on the plate, the tips of her ears starting to turn red.
It wasn't shyness, it was embarrassment; the kind of embarrassment that makes you want to crawl into a hole in the ground immediately.
She remembered seeing Su Ting arm in arm with Su Yu at the school gate earlier, and the sour feeling in her heart. She remembered how she had hurriedly dragged Shu Chang to take a taxi here for this "chance encounter". She remembered how Su Ting kept saying "our family". She was actually jealous of someone else's older sister.
Shu Chang sat beside her, head down, shoulders trembling. It wasn't from the cold, but from trying to hold back her laughter.
Su Yu introduced them casually, "Oh, I forgot to introduce them. This is Liu Yifei, the female lead in my movie. This is Shu Chang, her good friend, both of them are actors."
He gestured towards Su Ting with his chin, "This is my sister, Su Ting. She just came to Beijing from Shanghai and is coming to help out at my company."
Liu Yifei raised her water glass, took a sip, which cooled her burning face. She looked up at Su Ting, her voice soft and weak, and this time her smile wasn't feigned.
"Hello, sister."
Shu Chang finally couldn't hold back any longer, let out a soft "pfft," and then quickly picked up her water glass to cover her face.
