A priest in North America, what the hell is the Demon Gate system?
Chapter 31 The Priest's Efforts
"I am a priest, so I naturally have experience dealing with these kinds of supernatural phenomena."
Li Ang simply brushed it off; he couldn't very well tell them that he had a system, could he?
"In short, leaving the railway area will lead to a worse place, so we have to stay in this area until we find a way out."
Wang Bingbing rubbed her temples, somewhat speechless: "So we're going to have to play people from the 19th century now?"
"Pretty much. Your current attire is already suspicious enough. Luckily, the foreman didn't ask any more questions." Li Ang shrugged.
Wang Bingbing glanced down at her windbreaker and hiking pants, realizing they were indeed a bit out of step with the times.
"So what do we do now?" Wang Bingbing asked.
"Follow Wang Changming for now. Based on my experience, we'll probably need to gather more information if we want to leave here." Li Ang glanced at the foreman.
"Um...Father, may I speak now?" Nia suddenly raised her hand and asked weakly.
"...Of course, Sister Nia, you're not the Silent Sister." Nia's obedience made Li Ang facepalm.
"I'm just afraid of saying the wrong thing..." Nia whispered.
No sooner had he finished speaking than a commotion arose in the distance.
Li Ang heard loud shouts and curses, spoken with a heavy Southern American accent.
"Hurry up! Throw this unlucky thing out! Don't leave it in the way!"
About fifty meters away, a white man with a beer belly was waving a rifle and yelling at several Chinese laborers.
The Chinese laborers were struggling to carry something. Li Ang squinted and saw that it was a corpse wrapped in a tattered straw mat.
The straw mat wasn't wrapped tightly, revealing a foot covered in mud.
The other Chinese workers on the construction site stopped what they were doing and watched silently. No one spoke, except for the white supervisor who was still shouting.
"Hurry! Throw it far away! We still have work to do this afternoon!"
The Chinese laborers carrying the body kept their heads down and walked step by step into the forest. The body in the straw mat swayed slightly with their footsteps.
Looking from afar, Li Ang saw that Wang Changming's face was very ugly, and he walked up to argue with the white overseer.
"Let's go, let's follow them and see."
Li Angchong and his companion waved and headed towards the center of the commotion.
"Mr. Brian, we absolutely need professional equipment to go up and explore! Otherwise, people will die," Wang Changming argued with the supervisor in broken English.
"Are you going to pay for the equipment, you Chinese?" Foreman Brian's expression was disdainful, as if he didn't care about the dead Chinese laborers at all.
Wang Changming clenched his fists, but tried to control his tone: "At least... at least give him a proper burial! We can't just abandon him like this."
"A grand funeral?" Brian asked, as if he'd heard a joke.
"Do you know how long it takes to bury someone? Are you going to take responsibility if the construction is delayed? Or are you planning to pay for his coffin yourself?"
Several Chinese laborers around him had their heads down, but Li Ang noticed that their expressions were full of anger.
Wang Changming fell silent. He turned around, waved to the workers carrying the body, and gestured for them to continue walking.
As the dust swirled around him, his figure seemed to exude a profound sense of powerlessness.
Just then, Li Ang walked over.
"Good afternoon, gentlemen." He greeted them with a smile, speaking fluent American English, his voice ringing out clearly in the empty construction site.
Brian turned his head sharply and was clearly taken aback when he saw Li Ang.
Then he saw Nia and Wang Bingbing following behind Li Ang, a blonde nun and an oriental woman wearing novel work clothes.
"You are..." Brian frowned, his gun unconsciously rising to the ground.
"I am Father Leon, from the west coast." Leon smiled and extended his hand.
"These two are my companions, Sister Nia and Ms. Wang. We were passing by when we heard that a railway was under construction, so we came to take a look."
Brian didn't shake hands, but instead looked Li Ang up and down, his eyes full of suspicion: "A Chinese priest? This is the first time I've ever seen one."
"The Lord's glory will shine upon all people, regardless of race." Li Ang said without changing his expression, turning his gaze to the corpse wrapped in straw mat.
"I think I just heard something unfortunate..."
Brian hesitated. In 19th-century America, clergy held a very high social status, especially for a low-level overseer like Brian. Even if the other party was Chinese, if they were from the church, they were someone he couldn't afford to offend.
"He fell while doing blasting exploration, it happens all the time." Brian reluctantly extended his hand and shook hands with Leon.
"Often? So you're planning to just throw him into the forest?" Leon still maintained his smile.
"Should we hold a funeral for him? We work fourteen hours a day here, we don't have the time for that!" Brian's tone was not friendly, but he didn't dare to say too much.
Li Ang shook his head, his expression turning serious, and said very earnestly:
"Mr. Brian, I understand your pressure. However, carelessly discarding corpses not only goes against the will of God, but is also a hygiene problem."
He took two steps up and stated calmly in a voice loud enough for everyone around to hear, "It's summer now, corpses decompose quickly. If it attracts wild animals, that's one thing, but what if it breeds a plague... do you think this construction site can still operate?"
Brian's expression changed drastically.
"Malaria and cholera, once these diseases spread, it's not just a matter of one or two people dying," Li Ang continued, his tone calm.
"The whole project will have to stop, and they might even send people from Philadelphia or the state to investigate. Do you think your boss would rather see that happen, or spend some time burying the body?"
Although the Chinese laborers around couldn't understand English, they seemed to realize, seeing Brian's increasingly grim expression, that the priest who had suddenly appeared was speaking up for them, and they began to discuss among themselves.
Wang Changming stood aside, looking at Li Ang with a complex expression, a mixture of expectation and confusion.
After outlining the pros and cons, Li Ang added, "The Lord is watching us all the time, Mr. Brian. We all want to go to heaven eventually, don't we?"
Brian gritted his teeth, stared at Li Ang for a long time, and then said helplessly:
"You're right, Father, I'll have them bury this guy."
After saying that, he turned and walked away, muttering as he went, "Damn Chinamen... what a mess..."
Once he was out of sight, cheers erupted on the construction site!
"That fatso chickened out!"
"Who was that priest! He's the one who helped us!"
"May Mazu protect us...it must be Mazu who sent him..."
There were all sorts of opinions, but Li Ang didn't care. At this moment, Wang Changming also came over.
"Thank you, Father," Wang Changming said in Chinese, his voice a little hoarse.
"It was no trouble at all." Li Ang waved his hand, revealing a gentle smile.
"However, the burial needs to be arranged quickly; I think that foreman has limited patience."
Wang Changming nodded, turned around and said a few words to the workers. Soon, several workers found shovels, selected a relatively flat spot next to the railway, and began digging a pit.
Li Ang stood aside watching, and Wang Bingbing and Niya followed. Niya whispered a prayer, while Wang Bingbing frowned, her gaze fixed on the corpse wrapped in a straw mat.
"In places like this... human life is really worthless," Wang Bingbing said in a low voice.
"In 19th-century America, this was the fate of Chinese laborers; they had no strong support system," Li Ang said with some emotion.
Wang Bingbing fell silent and did not speak again.
As the two were talking, the workers were carefully carrying the body to the edge of the pit, preparing to put it down later.
But just then, the exposed foot suddenly twitched!
Everyone was stunned. The worker carrying the body trembled and shouted that the corpse had come back to life!
The straw mat fell to the ground with a thud, rolling away to reveal a Chinese laborer in his thirties, his face covered in mud and blood, with a noticeable wound on his forehead.
His eyes were closed and his lips were purple; he looked like a dead man to anyone.
However, the next second, his eyelids slowly opened.
A young Chinese laborer nearby jumped back in fright, while some workers had already raised their shovels and picks, looking tense.
However, the corpse blinked, its eyes filled with confusion.
He slowly sat up, looked around, and then said:
"Where am I?"
He spoke English with a heavy Irish accent.
The voice was hoarse, but Li Ang recognized it instantly – it was Peter Griffin's voice!
The construction site was deathly silent. All the Chinese laborers stared wide-eyed at their colleague who had come back from the dead and inexplicably started speaking English.
Wang Changming's mouth dropped open as he muttered, "Possessed...it must be possessed!"
Pete rubbed his forehead and suddenly noticed something was wrong with his hands; they were covered in calluses and wounds.
Then he touched his face again.
"Wait...this isn't me!"
He looked up, his expression horrified, and his gaze instantly fixed on Li Ang beside the crowd.
"Father! Father Li! Is that you? What's going on?!"
