Chapter 28 The Priest Walks Through the Tunnel
Li Ang swept his flashlight across the spot where Pete should have been, and a black walkie-talkie fell to the ground—the very one Pete had just been using.
However, apart from that, there wasn't even a footprint on the ground, as if the fat Irish man had suddenly evaporated.
"Pete? Pete Griffin! Don't joke around at a time like this!" Wang Bingbing shouted, her voice filled with anger and a hint of fear.
"Don't waste your energy, this guy is probably on another channel now." Li Ang put away the Holy Judgment in his hand, bent down to pick up the walkie-talkie, which was still warm from his body.
Nia's fingers gripped the cross tightly, her knuckles turning white. Wang Bingbing's expression was also not good. She tried to turn on her phone to make a call, but found that there was no signal at all.
The thick fog enveloped everyone like cotton, reducing visibility to less than three meters. The beams of flashlights seemed to have been swallowed up by the darkness, making it impossible to see anything in the distance.
In the thick fog, the Fujian folk song sung in Pete's voice quietly stopped, leaving only a deathly silence.
Li Ang picked up the walkie-talkie and simultaneously pulled out a tracking compass from his pocket.
Close your eyes and use your consciousness to establish a connection between the two. Soon, the compass begins to spin rapidly.
"Father, is this a compass? You also know about feng shui?"
Wang Bingbing approached curiously, clearly shocked that Li Ang, a priest, could produce a compass.
"Father, isn't this against the rules of exorcism..." Nia muttered softly.
"Sister Nia, you need to be flexible. God hasn't said anything, so what can I say?" Li Ang didn't care about this or that, or whether it was formal or not. As long as he could get out of there, that was good enough.
Wang Bingbing nodded, her expression towards Li Ang now showing a hint of appreciation.
Soon, the pointer stopped, still following the direction of the railway.
"It seems we're still going in the same direction, Father. Are we sure we should go that way?"
Wang Bingbing glanced at the pointer, looking somewhat worried.
"Miss Wang." Li Ang turned to look at Wang Bingbing, the light from the flashlight reflecting on his face, making him appear somewhat cold and indifferent.
"You have two choices now: First, stay here and wait for the fog to clear; maybe that Irishman will come back on his own later."
"Secondly, from now on, listen to me and follow me."
Li Ang's tone was somewhat domineering, and then he added, "Of course, you've already signed an exorcism waiver, so I don't care what you choose."
Wang Bingbing stared at him for two seconds, took a deep breath, and said, "Let's go."
I was walking along the railway just like before, but strangely, the fog around me was getting thinner and thinner.
Although I still couldn't see clearly what was happening ten meters away, I could at least make out the outline of the railway tracks further away.
After walking for about five more minutes, the sight before them at a railway crossing made all three of them stop.
It was a pitch-black tunnel.
Unlike modern concrete tunnels, the tunnel in front of us has a lot of red bricks and stones, and lots of wood, which is obviously the work of many years ago.
The opening is about four meters high and just wide enough for a train to pass through.
The surface of the red bricks is covered with moss and vines, and some of the bricks have begun to show signs of falling off.
Above the opening was a rusty iron plaque with barely legible, faded writing: “Owned by Pennsylvania Railroad.”
"We're here. As Pete said before, the haunted place is just beyond this tunnel."
Li Ang put away the compass, inwardly thinking, "It's not just this place that's haunted now... Should I ask Wang Bingbing for more money?"
"I had only seen some photos of the project before, and those were during the day. This tunnel looks rather unfriendly at night..."
Wang Bingbing shone her flashlight and subconsciously swallowed.
The flashlight beam shone deep into the tunnel, but the light seemed to be absorbed by the darkness, and one could not see very far.
The railway tracks extend all the way into the tunnel, with weeds growing between the sleepers.
"call----"
The wind blowing out of the tunnel carried a dusty smell, and at the same time, Li Ang and his two companions vaguely heard some sounds.
"Ding! Clang! Ding! Clang!"
Li Ang frowned slightly, turned to look at Wang Bingbing, and said calmly, "Ms. Wang, did you hear that?"
A bead of cold sweat trickled down Wang Bingbing's forehead. She nodded silently and said, "Hmm... this sounds like the sound of tapping on the rails, just like the workers reported before..."
Nia made the sign of the cross on her chest, her lips moving silently, presumably reciting a prayer.
"It looks like the boss battle is just ahead... Ms. Wang Bingbing, according to the exorcism waiver, you can stay here for now and don't need to come in with us."
Li Ang looked at Wang Bingbing with a sincere expression.
However, Wang Bingbing pulled a folding knife from her down jacket pocket, nodded firmly to Li Ang, and said:
"I won't hold you back, and besides, nobody can guarantee where's safe these days, can they?"
Wang Bingbing's attitude made Li Ang take a second look at her; this woman was much stronger than he had imagined.
"I'll lead the way, Sister Nia, stick close to me. As for Ms. Wang, if anything seems amiss, don't hesitate, just run outside." Li Ang took out a bottle of holy water from the exorcism box and unscrewed the cap.
"And what about you?" Wang Bingbing was taken aback and couldn't help but ask.
"Me?" Li Ang smiled, the flashlight beam casting flickering light on his face.
"Protecting believers is my job, and incidentally, I have health insurance."
"Amen, please do as the priest says, Ms. Wang," Nia said to Wang Bingbing, making the sign of the cross on her chest.
Wang Bingbing could tell that after Li Ang made the arrangements, Nia's eyes quickly changed from slightly fearful to trusting.
Li Ang stopped joking and stepped into the tunnel.
The temperature inside the tunnel dropped significantly; it had been quite hot outside, but inside the tunnel it was like an icebox.
Nia's breath drifted in the lamplight, and water droplets slowly seeped out from the brick wall, running down the vines and dripping onto the sleepers with a soft pattering sound.
Footsteps echoed in the space, the sounds of Li Ang's hard leather shoes, Nia's soft cowhide shoes, and Wang Bingbing's hiking boots with their rubber soles blending together.
After walking about several dozen meters, Li Ang suddenly stopped.
"Wait a minute," he said in a low voice.
The two people behind her immediately stopped, and Wang Bingbing looked at Li Ang with a puzzled expression.
Li Ang tilted his head, as if listening to something. After a few seconds, he slowly turned the flashlight and swept it behind Wang Bingbing.
"Ms. Wang, just now...did you hear any other footsteps? Right behind you."
Wang Bingbing's face turned pale instantly.
"Father, please...don't joke around..."
However, the next second, Wang Bingbing broke out in a cold sweat, because she also clearly heard footsteps.
"Slap...slap..."
The sound came from the tunnel behind Wang Bingbing, growing louder as it approached.
The footsteps were heavy, sounding like boots on a gravel floor.
Wang Bingbing thought for a moment and felt like she'd heard that voice somewhere before. Suddenly, as if realizing something, she exclaimed in a low voice:
"That's Pete's footsteps!"
A gust of wind suddenly blew out from the front of the tunnel, carrying the earthy smell and making the three people's clothes rustle.
"Could it be Mr. Pete?" Nia asked uncertainly.
Li Ang didn't speak, but instantly released his divine sense, quickly scanning along the railway tracks towards the source of the sound. In that instant, Li Ang's expression suddenly changed!
He then uttered only one word:
"run!"
