Chapter 41 Fusion
With a slight flap of its wings, the insect was completely crushed.
Elijah ignored the insects and stood in front of a corpse whose original shape was no longer recognizable, looking down at it for two seconds.
This is the first infected person outside the quarantine area. It is a size larger than a normal person, and its skin looks like it has been turned inside out, with flesh turned outwards and bone spurs protruding from its joints. Just a moment ago it was howling and charging over, but now it lies on the ground, as quiet as a strangely shaped piece of flesh.
Elijah stepped over its back.
The three wings opened and closed slowly behind them, like breathing.
The surrounding area is filled with barbed wire, concrete barriers, disinfection channels, and rows of empty military tents.
The soldiers stationed there all retreated the moment Elijah appeared. They had just received orders from their superiors to leave the area immediately, and that more professional people would handle the situation there.
Elijah ignored the soldiers.
He stepped onto the asphalt road inside the guardrail and walked in.
The buildings on both sides of the street were unrecognizable, their walls covered with dark red, fleshy veins that seemed to writhe slightly. The ground was covered in slime and bone fragments, and the air was thick with the stench of decay and rust.
Elijah traversed this hellish realm, his white wings outstretched, and golden light suppressed all the filth within a three-meter radius around him.
He killed quickly and quietly.
Unlike speaking in a church, there are no lines, no performances, and no audience.
Pure cleaning.
......
By the time Morrison and Corbyn reached the cordon, the sun was almost setting.
Two people, dressed in full protective suits and wearing sealed masks, jumped out of the military off-road vehicle. The sound of breathing inside the masks echoed in my ears, muffled and irritating.
Corbyn walked ahead, crossed the quarantine line, and stepped into the first street of the infected area.
Then he stopped.
The streets were littered with corpses.
They are not human corpses, but infected individuals.
One body after another, some were cut in half at the waist, some were left with only half a torso, the cuts were ridiculously clean, and the tissue texture on the cross-section was clearly visible.
The blood on the ground had begun to congeal, making a sticky sound when stepped on.
Corbyn took two steps forward, turned a corner, and went down the next street.
Three blocks in a row were completely cleared out.
"What's going on..." Corbin's voice came from behind his mask, muffled.
Morrison walked over to him, squatted down, and glanced at the nearest infected corpse.
The chest cavity was pierced through, and there were no tear marks at the edges of the wound. It was not a blunt instrument, nor a sharp blade; it was something extremely sharp and flexible that pierced through in one go.
"It was that angel who did it," Morrison said, standing up in a calm tone.
Corbyn remained silent.
He looked at the corpses all over the street, then looked at his own hands.
What was his ability again?
Severing the head of a living organism remotely.
When he first awakened, he thought it was pretty powerful; one glance and the other person's head was gone.
Simple, straightforward, and cool.
But now...
Corbin looked back at the street behind him, littered with corpses. He estimated that there were at least a hundred remains of infected people in this area alone.
He looked at Morrison again.
Morrison's ability is enhanced strength, which means he can punch through a wall.
If he wanted to remove someone's head, it would only take one punch.
So Corbin's ability is essentially... a long-range version of Morrison's punch?
It only works on living things?
Can't even break down a wall?
Corbyn closed his eyes.
Then look at those angels, with three wings, they can fly, slash, stab, defend, and heal. One person can clear three streets without even needing to wear protective clothing.
What about Corbyn?
Wearing protective suits and huddled in the back, their biggest contribution after arriving was counting the corpses!
The difference is not small, it's at the species level.
"What are you thinking about?" Morrison glanced at him.
"I'm thinking about retirement."
Morrison ignored him.
The two continued deeper into the area, where the corpses became increasingly dense, with some areas piled up in several layers, the bodies of the infected stacked together, flesh and blood mixed together.
A commotion came from afar.
It wasn't a human voice, but a dense, muffled impact sound, accompanied by a high-frequency shriek.
Morrison and Corbyn exchanged a glance, quickened their pace, climbed over an overturned bus, and ascended to the rooftop of a three-story building on the street.
They saw Elijah.
The three-winged angel hovered above a crossroads, with an open area below. Infected people were surging in from all directions like a tide.
Not a dozen, not several dozen.
There are hundreds.
Infected people from several blocks around were all running this way, as if they had received some signal. They were smashing through all the obstacles in the road like madmen, howling as they rushed toward the light that was floating in the air.
Elijah did not retreat.
Three wings spread out at the same time, sweeping horizontally.
The tip narrowed into a blade, slicing through a group of infected who rushed at it. Seven or eight bodies were cut in half at the same time, with internal organs and bits of flesh flying everywhere.
The second wave followed immediately.
Three infected individuals jumped up simultaneously from different directions. One of them grabbed the tip of Elijah's left wing, while the other two were caught directly at the base of his wing.
Elijah's body sank.
The three infected individuals dug their fingernails into the gaps between the wings and began to tear them, ripping out several white feathers and causing blood to seep from the base of the wings.
Elijah frowned.
The right wing suddenly swung horizontally, its tip piercing the head of an infected person hanging on the left wing. At the same time, a third wing swept up from below, knocking two other infected people away.
Then, the two people on the rooftop witnessed a scene that silenced them.
The several torn wounds on Elijah's left wing were healing, and new feathers were sprouting from the wounds at a speed visible to the naked eye. In less than five seconds, the wounds disappeared, and the wing was restored to its original state.
Corbyn covered his face, his tone tinged with emotion: "Dude... are we really all on the same level?"
Morrison stared at the figure in the air, bathed in golden light and with its three wings spread wide, speechless.
It can attack, fly, defend, and heal.
Are these the Catholic angels?
He's definitely different from those self-taught superhumans!
Elijah continued to fight amidst the waves of infected, his wings opening and closing faster and faster, each fold crushing a body and each unfolding sweeping away a swarm.
The infected person's blood and mucus splattered onto his skin, but he showed no reaction.
Corbyn witnessed the whole thing from the rooftop, and now he has a deep-seated doubt about life.
Forget it.
Recognizing the gap is also a skill.
"The ground," Morrison suddenly spoke.
Corbyn snapped out of his daze and looked down.
On the street below the rooftop, the infected people who hadn't yet rushed to Elijah stopped.
It wasn't a stop caused by being killed; it was a voluntary stop.
They stood still, their bodies began to convulse violently, their mouths opened to an impossible angle, emitting a sound that didn't seem to come from their throats—deep, drawn-out, like some kind of resonance.
The ground is shaking.
The rooftop beneath Corbyn's feet began to sway. He crouched down to hold onto the edge and saw a scene that sent chills down his spine.
Those infected who had stopped began to gravitate towards each other.
It wasn't that I walked over; I was dragged over.
Numerous dark red, fleshy tentacles sprout from their bodies, intertwining, piercing, and embedding themselves into each other's bodies.
The bodies of the two infected individuals fused together, their four legs forming a base, their two heads squeezed into an irregular mass of flesh. Then a third crashed in, a fourth, a fifth...
Flesh and blood are being reconstituted.
The bones are growing.
A new, massive silhouette is taking shape in the middle of the street.
Corbyn opened his mouth, but couldn't utter a single word.
Elijah above also stopped moving, his three wings half-spread, hovering in the air, looking down.
The ever-expanding mass of flesh was already two stories high and was still growing.
It is merging.
