Chapter 80 Assassination
Chapter 80 Assassination
As night approached, Matt, a special agent at S.H.I.E.L.D., was idly strolling around.
This street hero, however, seemed at a loss.
"Matt, what brings you here today? Aren't you going to stand up for justice?"
The sudden sound brought Matt back to his senses.
"Chief, as you know, it's been difficult for me to take any action lately."
Matt's voice sounded somewhat frustrated. He sighed and continued, "Since the last encounter with those supernatural forces, I've realized that my abilities are becoming increasingly limited in this ever-changing city."
Those events made me feel deeply inadequate, and I even began to question whether I could still easily protect the peace of this neighborhood as I used to.
Matt also participated in the last battle when the Red Giants led their henchmen to attack New York, and his record was that he was defeated by one of Banner's henchmen.
If it weren't for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents protecting him, Matt would have been cremated on the spot.
This battle shattered Matt's confidence. The thought that future battles would be between superpowered individuals made Matt feel abandoned by the times.
Moreover, Matt's old rival Kingpin seemed to have vanished without making any move.
Even though his influence was almost being squeezed out of Hell's Kitchen, he didn't utter a single word.
This wasn't like Kingpin's style, and Matt suspected that Kingpin might have some other conspiracy.
Matt's doubts grew heavier and heavier, like the night. Kingpin, the king of shadows in New York's underworld, was often more terrifying in silence than in roar.
Kingpin's restraint likely indicates that he is brewing a much grander scheme, a conspiracy that could overturn the status quo and even threaten the peace of the entire city.
"Chief, I need to find out exactly what Jin Bing is planning."
Matt's eyes gleamed with determination, as if he were making a promise to himself and to the director.
"This city needs our protection, and I cannot just wait."
Since Matt can't deal with those superpowered individuals on the battlefield, he can still contribute his strength to prevent those criminals from causing trouble in the rear.
Is it that the "bond" between the two is deep, or that Matt has his sights set on Kim and won't let go?
Xia Ling didn't want to say much about the relationship between the two, but it would be good to let Matt make contact with Kingpin; perhaps they could put on a good show.
He loves watching fun things!
"If you want to take down Kingpin, I have some intelligence I can share with you."
Xia Ling took an encrypted document out of her pocket and gently pushed it in front of Matt.
"Kingpin will be taking Vanessa home tonight, a rare moment of relaxation for them. But according to reliable sources, several of his long-time enemies are restless and are planning to assassinate him on the way."
Matt took the document, quickly glanced through it, and frowned.
Given Kingpin's ruthlessness and cunning, it's unlikely that these assassins could kill him. Moreover, Matt doesn't want Kingpin to die in a gangland feud; he'd much rather Kingpin be brought to justice.
Moreover, he was well aware of Vanessa's importance to Kingpin. If Vanessa were to meet with misfortune, Kingpin's rage would erupt like a volcano, with unimaginable consequences.
"I must stop this assassination."
Matt said in a deep voice, his eyes flashing with determination.
Time was of the essence, so Matt quickly changed into a set of easy-to-move gear and prepared to set off immediately.
The night was deep, like the richest ink painting spread across the sky. Sparse moonlight barely penetrated the thick clouds, casting mottled and weak silver light, draping a mysterious veil over the bustling yet slumbering New York City.
Kingpin's black Rolls-Royce, like a silent behemoth, slowly cruised along the quiet street. The golden winged emblem on the hood was faintly visible under the dim lights, highlighting the owner's extraordinary status and position.
Inside the car, the atmosphere was warm and private. Kingpin, the emperor of New York's underworld, who was usually so imposing and unapproachable, appeared unusually gentle at this moment, personally driving this vehicle that symbolized his power.
He was dressed in a tailored suit, perfectly fitted, and even in the dim light, it was hard to conceal the powerful aura emanating from him.
Beside him stood Vanessa, his soulmate, whose graceful figure was accentuated by an exquisite black dress. The hem of her dress swayed gently with the slight bumps of the car, like the tenderest dream in the night.
Her smile was warm and serene, her eyes sparkling with deep love and dependence on Kingpin. The tacit understanding and affection between the two needed no words; everything was understood without being spoken.
However, this tranquility did not last long.
Just as they were about to drive onto the secluded road leading to the private estate, the air suddenly became tense.
Several dark figures darted out from the shadows and quickly surrounded the Rolls-Royce.
Gunshots rang out suddenly, shattering the silence of the night and breaking the cozy atmosphere inside the car.
Vanessa's face turned pale instantly, but she didn't scream. Instead, she gripped Kingpin's hand even tighter, her eyes filled with worry and reluctance for him.
A flash of anger crossed Kingpin's eyes, but more than that, he was anxious for Vanessa's safety.
He reacted quickly, relying on his years of vigilance and skill to try to dodge the sudden attack and shield Vanessa with his body.
However, the enemy was clearly better prepared, and the dense bullets, like the scythe of death, mercilessly sliced through the surrounding air.
Many bullets struck the man, spurting out bursts of blood, but the man didn't utter a sound.
"stop!"
Matt's voice was deep and powerful; he had arrived at that moment.
Upon discovering the situation, he moved swiftly, his figure like a ghost, weaving among the enemies, wielding his staff with precision, each strike either knocking away weapons or subduing opponents, defusing the originally fierce attacks one by one.
Seeing this, Kingpin was filled with turmoil, but he seized the opportunity to quickly start the vehicle, holding Vanessa tightly in his arms, and using the vehicle as cover to further defend against the remaining attacks.
With the final blow, Matt knocked down all the assassins.
Kingpin breathed a sigh of relief. Ignoring his own injuries, he checked Vanessa's body to see if she was hurt.
"It's all over, Vanessa, we..."
Looking at his smiling wife, Kingpin couldn't continue. He felt the stickiness in his hands; without a doubt, it was the feel of blood.
Moreover, the blood was found on Vanessa's back.
"Perhaps I'm still too late."
Matt, watching this scene from outside the car, murmured to himself.
