Chapter 122 Night Sneak Peek
Chapter 122 Night Sneak Peek
night.
Strange's palms were sweating. As a high-achieving student, his most exciting activity was racing cars, but he had never done anything like this before.
They actually had to go out late at night and secretly investigate the possibly heavily guarded church.
"Strange, are you scared? If you are, we won't investigate. Just forget about the statue."
Christine's tone was slightly teasing, which instantly made Strange feel incredibly ashamed.
"It's alright, it's just a statue anyway. West and Morales didn't come, so we can just go back."
If they ask later, we'll just say we didn't find anything.
Christine's words were gentle, but the shame and resentment that had been stirred within him made him shake his head violently.
"No, Christine, we can't give up like this. Although I've never experienced an adventure like this before, this one is different. That statue... it gives me a strange feeling, as if there's some important information waiting for us to uncover."
Christine looked at Strange's determined gaze, a smile playing on her lips, her eyes gleaming with approval.
"I knew you wouldn't give up so easily. Okay, let's continue. However, we need to be more careful; the church's security might be tighter than we think."
As she spoke, she took some simple tools and a flashlight from her backpack and distributed them to Strange.
"These might come in handy. We need to try to avoid the guards' sight and approach the church quietly."
The streets of Gros were deserted at night, which made it easier for the two to move around.
The two tiptoed along the edge of the street, using the darkness and the shadows of the buildings as cover, and gradually approached the solemn and mysterious church.
As they closed the distance, their heartbeats quickened involuntarily, and a tense yet exciting atmosphere filled the air.
"Damn, is this a military base? Why are there so many people patrolling so late at night?"
Strange lowered his voice, his eyes revealing a hint of surprise and worry.
Upon hearing this, Christine frowned and quickly scanned her surroundings, checking for any details that might expose them.
"This church seems to be much more complicated than we expected, but now that we're here, there's no turning back."
She spoke in a low voice, her tone conveying an undeniable firmness.
Strange glanced at Christine with some oddness. Why did she seem more eager than he was?
"We need to change our strategy."
Christine continued.
"Approaching directly is obviously impossible. We need to find a more concealed entrance, or use other methods to distract the guards."
She pulled Strange along, and the two quickly retreated to a more secluded alley to discuss their next move.
Christine took out a pre-prepared map of Gros Town from her backpack and carefully studied the terrain around the church by the dim light of her flashlight.
"Look here, there's an abandoned garden behind the church, and the wall looks a bit dilapidated. Maybe we can find a breakthrough there."
She pointed to a corner on the map and said.
Strange nodded in agreement, and the two then changed direction, circling around to the back of the church. Sure enough, just as Christine had said, there was a weed-infested, almost forgotten garden there, with a few loose bricks remaining in one corner of the wall.
"We need to hurry, or things will get bad if the guards spot us."
Christine urged them softly, and the two of them worked together to move a large brick, barely managing to squeeze out a gap through which they could pass.
They carefully squeezed through the gap and entered the abandoned garden.
The garden was completely silent, broken only by the occasional sound of the night wind and the distant patrolling of guards.
The two walked along the edge of the garden, carefully avoiding the grass where they might leave footprints, and quietly approached the church.
Finally, they arrived at the back wall of the church.
Christine took a rope from her backpack, secured it to a thick tree, and then gestured for Strange to follow.
They used ropes to climb up the back wall of the church and found a relatively hidden window.
Christine gently pushed open the window, peeked inside to check, and only after confirming it was safe did she signal Strange to come in as well.
"Be careful!"
Christine abruptly pulled Strange, who had just climbed in, aside, and the latter immediately understood and obediently hid.
A bright light flashed, and several figures holding flashlights passed by their side, fortunately the flashlights were not shone in their direction.
"Damn it, is this really a military camp? How...how is this possible?"
Strange, who had just uttered a curse, froze. He rubbed his eyes and looked again to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
As the beam of the flashlight unconsciously shone on the figures, Strange clearly saw that the priests, dressed in strange priestly attire, had appearances that were distinctly different from humans.
Strange's eyes widened, almost unable to believe what he was seeing. The priests had fish-like features, with scales covering their bodies that shimmered with an eerie luster in the dim light of the flashlight.
Their eyes were large and round, gleaming with a cold light.
"Christine...this...how is this possible?"
Strange's voice trembled, almost losing control.
Christine was also shocked, but she quickly regained her composure, gently patted Strange's shoulder to comfort him, and said in a low voice, "Calm down, Strange. We may have discovered a huge secret."
These priests... they may be members of some ancient ritual or secret society, and this church is very likely the place where they performed some kind of ritual or hid secrets.
"But...why are they fish-men?"
Strange still finds it hard to accept this fact.
"I don't know, but we must continue the investigation."
Christine's eyes hardened.
"Perhaps that statue holds the key to understanding everything. Now, we must be even more careful not to let these priests discover us."
Strange nodded. He didn't even want to think about the consequences if these fishmen found out.
The two held their breath, waiting for the sounds of the priests patrolling to fade into the distance, and only continued their actions after confirming that it was safe.
They cautiously explored the interior of the church, avoiding areas that might be patrolled.
"Hmm, what's that sticky stuff on the ground?"
Strange felt something strange under his feet, as if something was sticking to them. He bent down and touched it, and immediately felt his hand covered in sticky fluid.
The viscous liquid shimmered faintly in the darkness.
Strange didn't know what was going on, but he knew he was in big trouble.
