Courtyard House: Ten-year-old Master Zhu reorganizes the entire courtyard
Chapter 22 The Plan to Borrow a Knife
He Yuzhu returned to the dilapidated temple and carefully hid the note filled with evidence of his crimes behind a loose brick.
He did not act immediately.
A knife should be sharpened before use. The right moment should be waited for.
For the next two days, he didn't go anywhere. He just stayed around the dilapidated temple, helping his mother, Chen Lanxiang, chop firewood and playing with his younger sister, He Yushui, as if all the bloodshed and scheming before had nothing to do with him.
But his brain was like a sophisticated machine, running wildly.
Every complaint, every name, and every detail that Wang Kui made in the teahouse was repeatedly dissected and reassembled by him.
"Our Section Chief Liu's mouth is bigger than a hippopotamus's..."
"That sergeant from the military police, Ono, actually asked me for 'pretty girls' last time..."
Section Chief Liu, Wang Kui's immediate superior, is greedy.
Sergeant Ono, a Japanese military police officer, is a lecher.
Most importantly, Wang Kui's tone was full of resentment over the unfair distribution of spoils.
This is a perfect breakthrough.
On the third night, after everyone in the family had fallen asleep, He Yuzhu quietly got up. Under the dim light of an oil lamp, he took out two sheets of rough paper.
He didn't use his own handwriting. He redeemed a low-level skill from the system space—[Basic Imitation]—consuming the few system points he had accumulated.
He wrote his first letter with his left hand, his hand crooked and unsteady.
This letter was written to Section Chief Liu of the Detective Team.
The letter was simple, filled with the tone of a petty, informant:
"Section Chief Liu, you need to be careful. Your subordinate Wang Kui has been drinking and partying around lately, telling everyone he meets that you were the one who embezzled the cotton yarn from the warehouse in the west of the city, colluding with outsiders to set up the scheme. He even boasts that he has dirt on you and is just waiting for the opportunity to bring you down so he can take your place. I overheard this by chance and dared not fail to report it. I'm just someone who wants what's best for you."
Every word was like a poisoned needle, precisely piercing Section Chief Liu's most suspicious and sensitive nerves.
After he finished writing, he folded the letter and put it into an old envelope.
Then, he changed to a different sheet of paper and began writing his second letter.
This time, he imitated a rough and unruly font, like the handwriting of a soldier who couldn't read many words.
This letter was addressed to Sergeant Ono of the Military Police.
The letter was more direct and more insulting:
"Ono-sama, there's something I'm hesitant to say. That Wang Kui from the detective squad is an ungrateful dog. Last time you asked him to investigate the case of the murder of the Imperial Army soldier, he boasted to his brothers over drinks that he already knew who the murderer was, but he was keeping quiet, hoping to squeeze more money out of that family. He even called you an idiot, saying that all Japanese people know how to use knives is that their brains are like pigs. He said he treated you like a fool, and you even paid him. The brothers can't swallow this insult, so we're informing you, Ono-sama."
This letter, devoid of evidence, is driven solely by emotion. It directly attacks the intelligence and dignity of a Japanese officer.
For the arrogant Ono, this angered him more than any accusation.
Two letters and two knives were prepared silently.
The next morning, He Yuzhu entered the city with the first letter in his hand. He lingered for a long time in front of the detective team headquarters, when he saw a seven or eight-year-old newsboy run past.
He Yuzhu stopped him and took out two pieces of candy from his pocket.
"Kid, do me a favor." He lowered his voice, "Give this letter to the policeman on guard at the door and tell him it's for Section Chief Liu. If you do it, the candy is yours."
The newsboy's eyes lit up when he saw the candy. He snatched the letter, ran quickly over, shoved it into the gatekeeper's hand, and disappeared in a flash.
The entire process takes no more than thirty seconds.
He Yuzhu left immediately without lingering.
He didn't deliver the second letter himself. He went to Xu Fugui instead.
In a secluded corner near the courtyard house, He Yuzhu called Xu Fugui over.
"Uncle Xu, there's something I need you to do." He Yuzhu's tone was calm, but it sent a chill down Xu Fugui's spine.
"Pillar...Pillar, please speak, please speak." Xu Fugui bowed and scraped, adopting an extremely humble posture.
He Yuzhu handed him the envelope containing the second letter. The envelope was deliberately dusty, making it look like it had been picked up from the ground.
"Find an opportunity to 'find' this," He Yuzhu said, staring into Xu Fugui's eyes. "Then, take it to the mailroom of the Military Police Headquarters and say you found it on the road and that it looks like something important, so you didn't dare not hand it over. Remember, you 'found' it, and you know nothing else."
Xu Fugui's legs went weak when he heard the words "military police".
"Pillar, this...this thing is hot to the touch! What if..."
"There's no 'what if'," He Yuzhu interrupted him. "You're just a good citizen who found something. If you handle it well, you'll get your share of the benefits later. If you don't..."
He Yuzhu didn't finish his sentence, but his icy gaze was more effective than any threat.
"I'll do it! I'll do it!" Xu Fugui shuddered in fright and quickly stuffed the letter into his pocket as if he were carrying a red-hot iron.
After doing all this, He Yuzhu returned to the dilapidated temple.
Like a seasoned hunter, he laid two traps, then retreated into the shadows, quietly waiting for his prey to walk into them.
He doesn't need to see the results with his own eyes.
He has his own eyes.
Three more days passed, and the ghost market appeared.
He Yuzhu saw Lao Gui again.
He didn't ask anything, but as usual, he traded a compressed biscuit for some coarse grains.
The transaction was completed, and as he was about to leave, Old Ghost called him back.
"Kid," Old Ghost's voice sounded strange, "something's been off in the city lately."
He Yuzhu stopped and turned to look at him.
"The detective squad and the military police are like mad dogs." Old Gui lowered his voice, his eyes gleaming. "I heard that the detective squad is investigating an internal mole, causing chaos. Yesterday, I saw with my own eyes that Wang Kui from the detective squad was called to the military police for questioning. He was inside for an hour, and when he came out, his face was as white as paper."
He Yuzhu's face was expressionless.
He simply nodded and said, "Understood."
Then he turned and disappeared into the darkness of the mass grave.
The wind is getting colder and colder.
It's time to close the net.
