Courtyard Houses: Longevity Since the War of Resistance

Chapter 3: Taking Down the Point Alone

After a brief rest, the independent guerrilla company decided to probe the area outside the mountains.

I sent out scouts, who quickly brought back news that there was a village called Kaoshan at the foot of the mountain, where about a platoon of puppet troops and five Japanese soldiers were stationed. They had seized the ancestral hall at the entrance of the village as a stronghold.

They requisitioned grain and people, oppressed the common people, and the people suffered terribly.

"Company commander, shall we fight or not?" Zhao Dahai rubbed his hands together, eager to get started.

The team was newly formed and desperately needed a victory and supplies. I observed the terrain of the village and shook my head: "The village is too small, there are too many enemies, a direct assault would easily hurt the civilians, and too much noise would attract enemies from the surrounding strongholds."

He selected four of his best fighters, including Zhao Dahai, saying, "The five of us will sneak in tonight and take down these bastards under cover of darkness."

The night was as dark as ink, and five shadowy figures silently crept into Kaoshan Village. I took the lead; the title of King of Close Combat granted me not only skill, but also an extraordinary ability to adapt to the dark environment and the lightness of a cat's steps.

At the entrance of the ancestral hall, two puppet army sentries who were dozing off with their guns in their arms were unknowingly snapped at the neck.

He made a hand gesture, and the five people dispersed.

I crept alone towards the main room, where I could hear the laughter and smell of alcohol from the Japanese soldiers. Through the crack in the door, I saw three Japanese soldiers drinking around a brazier, while the other two were presumably resting.

Before the Japanese soldier with his back to me could turn around, I covered his mouth and nose with one hand, and with the other hand, I precisely stabbed him in the heart with a dagger. Just as the Japanese soldier next to me noticed, I had already pulled out the dagger and flung it at his throat.

The last Japanese soldier reached for his gun leaning against the wall. I lunged forward, grabbed his wrist with my iron grip, and twisted it backward. A snapping sound and a scream rang out at the same time. Then, a heavy blow to his temple killed him instantly.

"Kill the enemy and gain 38 years of lifespan."

"Defeat the enemy to gain 35 years of lifespan."

System notifications sounded one after another.

At the same time, several short sounds of fighting came from the other room; Zhao Dahai and his men had dealt with the other two Japanese soldiers.

As for the remaining thirty or so puppet soldiers, their quality was even worse. Most of them were killed by me in their sleep, cleanly and efficiently.

When Kaoshan Village was liberated, the old village chief held my hand, tears streaming down his face, as we arrived.

"You've finally arrived. Those damned bastards kidnapped a lot of able-bodied men from our area a few days ago and locked them up in that Black Rock Tower five miles to the west to be forced into hard labor. I heard there are still some soldiers inside who were scattered in the battle before."

"Black Slate Watchtower?" My eyes narrowed. It was a crucial point in this area, and taking it down would be of great significance.

"Company commander, let's go and take it down!" Zhao Dahai volunteered.

I shook my head again. "The pillbox has a unique structure, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack. We lack heavy weapons, and a direct assault would result in too many casualties."

Looking at everyone, he said, "I'll go alone."

"What? Alone? That's too dangerous, Company Commander!" Everyone exclaimed in shock.

"Having too many people will only make us more exposed. Who among you is as strong as me in individual combat? You will provide support from the perimeter and only move when you hear the signal. That's an order." My tone was firm. As the king of close combat and with my rich special operations experience from my previous life, I was confident in this kind of raid.

Late at night on the second day after the liberation of Kaoshan Village, I hid alone in the bushes outside the Black Slate watchtower.

The pillbox stood like a monster in the night, with lights shining through its three windows, and the laughter of the puppet troops could be heard.

After observing for two hours, I moved.

Moving close to the ground and taking advantage of the gaps in the searchlight's sweep, they stealthily infiltrated. Just then, someone came out to urinate on the side of the pillbox—what incredible luck!

Is my character's attribute "Super Lucky Lancer"?

After dealing with this undisciplined puppet soldier, I entered the pillbox. The sentry on the first floor was dozing off by the door. I covered his mouth from behind and twisted it.

A head growing out of the back—what a magic trick!

As you ascend the narrow staircase, you can hear even snoring coming from the second floor.

Six puppet soldiers were fast asleep, crammed onto a shared bunk, with three rifles leaning against the wall. I moved between the bunks like the Grim Reaper, one slash at a time, buy five get one free, no bad reviews accepted.

In thirty seconds, all six puppet soldiers were killed.

"Kill 6 puppet soldiers and gain 131 years of lifespan".

The situation is more complicated with three layers.

Four Japanese soldiers were playing cards, with a light machine gun set up nearby, and two puppet soldiers standing guard at the window. I patiently waited for my chance, until one of the Japanese soldiers got up to get some wine from the corner, and then suddenly attacked.

Click!

The crisp sound of bones cracking was particularly jarring in the silent night air.

"Who goes there?" The Japanese man playing cards suddenly looked up.

His answer was a flying dagger that struck him squarely in the throat.

The other three Japanese soldiers hurriedly grabbed their guns, but I had already pounced on them, gouging their eyes and kicking their groins with incredible force. Two of them were already screaming in pain.

Then he grabbed the rifle and thrust it through the chest of the last Japanese soldier.

Less than five seconds later, I was once again amazed by the King of Melee Combat; I love you so much.

The remaining two puppet soldiers were stunned. Well, after two seconds, they were indeed stunned, completely bewildered, physically.

"Kill 6 enemy soldiers and gain 134 years of lifespan".

After clearing the three floors, I quickly found the entrance to the basement. He twisted the lock with force and it broke. Pushing open the wooden door, I saw more than thirty captured soldiers looking at me with suspicion.

"I am Li Feng from the Independent Guerrilla Company. If you want to live, come with me."

Among the captured soldiers, a scarred man was the first to step forward. "Brothers, our chance has come!"

I led them back to the second floor. "Pick up your weapons and guard the windows. When you see my signal, fire outwards."

I went back to the third floor, adjusted the searchlight, and flashed it three long and two short times in a regular pattern, which was the pre-arranged attack signal.

Moments later, gunfire erupted outside the pillbox as Zhao Dahai's independent company launched an attack.

At the same time, the captured soldiers inside the pillbox also opened fire. Although they had just received their weapons, they fought with extraordinary ferocity, fueled by intense hatred.

The remaining enemy forces, caught in a pincer attack, quickly retreated. I used machine gun fire from the third floor, precisely eliminating every resisting enemy.

"Kill enemy soldiers to gain lifespan..."

"Kill enemy soldiers to gain lifespan..."

As the last Japanese soldier fell in a pool of blood, the system notification finally sounded: "Cumulative enemy kills have reached 100. Reward: One chance to draw a skill!"

"Extract".

The roulette wheel in my mind spun rapidly, finally settling on a blood-red skull icon.

"Congratulations, host, you have acquired the skill: Immortality!"

"Skill effect: Rule-level regeneration. As long as the host has a drop of blood, a fragment, or even a trace of consciousness, lifespan can be consumed to instantly reshape the physical body and perfectly revive. Lifespan can also be consumed to heal the physical body."

This skill is invincible! Before, I was worried that if I died, I wouldn't be of any help in this national war. Now I don't have to worry anymore. With the skill given by the system, you Japanese devils, you'd better find your way to die!

After the battle, I checked the system interface:

Current lifespan: 3129 years

Skills: King of Melee, Undying Body

A man led the rescued soldiers over and gave a solemn military salute: "Sir, Wang Tiezhu, a surviving member of the 57th Division's reconnaissance company, requests to join the Independent Guerrilla Company!"
