Hong Kong film: Rise of Prison Break

Chapter 35 Making a Deal with the Devil

He shook his head, clicking his tongue in amazement, then changed the subject, his gaze sharpening as he looked at Robinson: "What? Such a large sum of money...aren't you afraid I'll be tempted too? Three billion Hong Kong dollars is enough to turn anyone into a devil."

Robinson stared intently at Zhang Wenjie's face, trying to find traces of greed in that young man's features.

"Who doesn't like money? But..." he said slowly, his voice tinged with uncertainty, "I'm afraid... I might have the life to take it, but not the life to spend it. I understand this better than anyone."

"Clever!" Zhang Wenjie suddenly laughed. He turned to the side and moved even closer to Robinson, shortening the distance between them to less than a meter. Their eyes met, their gazes sharp as knives.

"Compared to that pile of cold US dollars, which is now hiding in some rat hole, I, Zhang Wenjie... value something else more."

He pointed to Robinson's head.

"What I value in you is your insight, skills, and experience accumulated over decades of navigating the business world, as well as your seemingly useless but potentially still useful network of contacts!"

"Your son-in-law, Liu Yaozu, is a short-sighted good-for-nothing! He's throwing away this living gold mine, only eyeing that pile of worthless paper he may never find? Pathetically stupid!"

"The stupidest thing is that he didn't eliminate the threat completely, letting you live, and then... you ran into me!"

Zhang Wenjie's voice carried an undeniable confidence and ambition: "I firmly believe that professional matters should be left to professionals. I have... quite a few 'projects' that will bring substantial profits in the future, but I need an experienced person who understands the rules of the game, and... has no ties to others and can be completely at my disposal to steer them."

Robinson's cloudy eyes gleamed, and he asked in a hoarse voice, "Then... what do I get? Kid, don't try to fool me. I can see the greed in your eyes, though you try to hide it well, you can't fool me. Dare you say you really don't care at all about those three hundred million dollars?"

"A chance to live," Zhang Wenjie answered decisively. "A chance to personally avenge yourself against your bastard son-in-law, Liu Yaozu! And incidentally... I can ensure you walk out of Stanley Prison unharmed and with a clean record!"

He paused, looking at Robinson's still suspicious eyes, and the smile on his face suddenly turned somewhat sinister, even carrying a hint of cunning.

"As for that three hundred million US dollars you mentioned? Heh... Mr. Lu, are you feeling... a little dizzy right now? Your reactions seem a little slower than usual? And you're talking... a little more than usual?"

Robinson's expression changed drastically. He subconsciously shook his head and did feel a slight dizziness and sluggishness, but he had thought it was due to being hit and his emotional state.

"Don't be nervous," Zhang Wenjie waved his hand, his tone as relaxed as if he were talking about the weather, "It's just a little... a light dose of 'auxiliary agent,' a variant of truth serum. The side effects are minimal, and it'll be fine in a bit. It's mainly... to verify some of my previous guesses."

He leaned closer, his voice extremely low, like a devil's whisper, "For example... a lizard, a specially made glass case, some unknown... secret room in your villa?"

"You...!!!" Robinson was truly horrified this time, his body trembled violently, and he almost dropped the cigarette in his hand onto the bed.

The location and method by which he hid the money were his last trump card and secret; even his closest daughter might not know all the details!

How could Zhang Wenjie know such specific details?

Unless... he really used some extraordinary means, or his intelligence capabilities are terrifyingly unimaginable!

The human heart is the hardest thing to fathom, and secrets are the hardest things to keep.

Robinson was now convinced that the young man before him was far more dangerous and unfathomable than he had anticipated.

He doesn't play by the rules at all!

Seeing Robinson's horrified expression, Zhang Wenjie's gloomy smile suddenly vanished, replaced by his previous slightly amused expression.

"Don't worry, Boss Lu. I was just kidding. Where would you find such high-grade truth serum in prison?"

He shrugged.

"It's just some psychological suggestion and your post-injury reaction. As for the details... it's just hearsay plus a bit of reasonable speculation. See, it works quite well."

Robinson was stunned, then realized he had been tricked, but the shock in his heart did not completely subside. Instead, he became even more wary of Zhang Wenjie's scheming.

Being able to fool a seasoned veteran like him is a skill in itself.

"I, Zhang Wenjie, am a man of my word," Zhang Wenjie said solemnly, his tone becoming serious.

"It's just a mere three hundred million US dollars. I said I wouldn't touch it, and I won't. You should keep it for yourself, for your retirement, or to buy more nice things when you burn paper money for your daughter."

He abruptly changed the subject, getting to the point: "Now, I have a plan. If this plan succeeds, I can not only guarantee your acquittal and release you from Stanley, but I can also let you see that scoundrel Liu Yaozu kneeling before you begging for mercy! At that time, you can either crush him on the ground or chop him up and feed him to the dogs, it's all up to you!"

"Really?!" Robinson's breathing suddenly quickened, and an astonishing light burst forth in his cloudy old eyes.

He revealed his hidden immense wealth, sacrificing himself to test Zhang Wenjie's true intentions and expose his real plan.

Hearing the promises of "acquittal" and "personal revenge" that he had longed for, even if they were just empty words, was enough to make his heart race.

As long as I can kill Liu Yaozu and comfort my daughter's spirit in heaven, what does it matter if I sell my soul to the devil and the rest of my life to this dangerous young man in front of me?!

"Of course!" Zhang Wenjie replied decisively.

He leaned close to Robinson's ear, his voice extremely low, and began to describe his plan quickly and clearly.

He spoke quickly but logically, covering topics such as cooperation between inside and outside the prison, personnel deployment, timing, and even loopholes and room for maneuver in legal procedures.

During this time, he would occasionally let out a low, slightly smug, eerie chuckle, as if he could already see the moment his plan would succeed.

Robinson listened intently, his aged face shifting with each word as Zhang Wenjie narrated, sometimes frowning, sometimes appearing to understand, and sometimes flashing with a fierce glint.

When Zhang Wenjie mentioned a key point, he couldn't help but nod slightly.

A few minutes later, Zhang Wenjie finished speaking the last word, leaned back against the headboard, and quietly looked at Robinson.

Robinson remained silent for a full half minute.

The cigarette in his hand had burned out, scalding his fingers, but he was completely unaware.

Suddenly, he gripped the burning cigarette butt tightly in his hand, and a slight sizzling sound and smell of burning flesh emanated from it.

He seemed oblivious to the pain, his eyes wide with a fierce determination and a near-mad burning desire for revenge.
