Chapter 60 Falcon Squad: Survival in the Ruins
(Please give more support to newcomers, thank you)
The leaden sky was perpetually dark, like a filthy cloth soaked in the stench of corpses and blood, hanging tightly over the head of the Fiend Realm.
The wind howled through the gaps in the collapsed high-rise buildings, sounding like the soft weeping of countless dead. The air was filled with an inescapable stench of decay, blood, poison, and a faint smell of gunpowder; each breath stung the lungs. Over the past ten years, everyone within Hope's stronghold had long since grown accustomed to this atmosphere of being accompanied by death.
Wang Ziqi crouched behind a broken concrete slab, his back pressed tightly against the cold, rough concrete wall. His fingertips gripped the modified assault rifle so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He lowered his head slightly, his breathing shallow and steady, his eyes fixed on the twisted street a hundred meters away through the shattered glass window.
He was only twenty-four years old, but the vibrancy of youth had long since vanished from his face, replaced by a weariness, determination, and a deep-seated vigilance that belied his age. His jawline was taut, his lips pressed into a dry, straight line, and his cheeks were slightly sunken from years of intense fighting and malnutrition. Only his eyes shone with an astonishing light, a survival light forged in mountains of corpses and seas of blood.
Ten years ago, he was just a lazy teenager holed up in his rented room, scrolling through videos and drifting through life. He had no ideals, no ambitions, no burdens, and no hopes, thinking that life would just pass by uneventfully and aimlessly. But the day the demon descended, his whole world collapsed.
There was no warning, no resistance, no miracle.
The monsters that crawled out of the void rifts ignored bullets, artillery fire, and all of humanity's prized technological weapons. They tore at flesh and blood, spread deadly poison, turning the living into rotting corpses, into nourishment, into tools for a new round of slaughter. In just three days, the city fell, civilization collapsed, and once-prosperous streets became a living hell. Wailing and screams echoed through the sky, yet they could not bring any salvation.
The global nuclear blitz barely repelled the first wave of evil, but the nuclear contamination and evil energy mingled, giving rise to even more terrifying, disgusting, and deadly mutated evil spirits. Humanity suffered defeat after defeat, with hundreds of millions dying, finally retreating to this bulwark of hope built of steel, concrete, and countless lives—this is not hope, but humanity's last prison and final graveyard.
Those who survived either eked out a living within the walls or took up arms to become hunters roaming the ruins.
Wang Ziqi became a killer and also became the captain of the Falcon Squad, a well-known force within the stronghold.
"Captain, reconnaissance complete. Within a 300-meter radius ahead, there are at least fifteen Corpse Fiends, three Shadow Fiends, and... traces of Blood Leech Fiends."
The tactical walkie-talkie crackled to life with Su Qing's hushed voice, tinged with a barely perceptible tremor. Su Qing was the squad's scout and medic, the youngest but surprisingly daring. Yet, the mere mention of the Blood Leech Fiend terrified anyone within the stronghold.
It was a giant blood-sucking worm nearly two meters long, eyeless and headless, its entire body covered in wet, ring-shaped muscles, every inch of its skin covered in sucker-like barbs, and its mouthparts were filled with layers of fine, sharp teeth. Once it wrapped around a human, it could instantly suck the person into a withered corpse. Even more disgusting was that it would lay eggs inside its host, and the moment the offspring burst out of the body was the deepest nightmare for all the killers.
Wang Ziqi frowned deeply, a deep frown forming between his brows, and his eyes darkened instantly.
Blood Leech Fiends always act alone. Their presence near a swarm of Corpse Fiends indicates that the density of fiend essence in the area far exceeds the mission's expectations. Their mission was only to collect urgently needed water purification components and discarded energy blocks—a lowest-level C-grade mission—but the current situation has clearly exceeded safe limits.
"Zhao Hu, deploy the defense on the left flank, set up the Shattering Shield, and watch out for Shadow Faces' close-range ground attacks." Wang Ziqi's voice was low and steady, yet it carried an unquestionable sense of command, his tone cold and decisive. "Lin Ye, prepare the heavy machine guns, only cover the densest areas of the zombie horde, indiscriminate firing is strictly prohibited, and absolutely no survivors should be injured."
"receive!"
"clear!"
A low response came from the walkie-talkie.
The Falcon Squad consists of five members, the standard combat configuration within the stronghold. Defender Zhao Hu, a burly man carrying an alloy Fiend-Breaking Shield, is responsible for frontal damage absorption; Fireman Lin Ye carries a modified heavy machine gun, responsible for area suppression; Reconnaissance medic Su Qing roams the flanks, responsible for early warning and first aid; Technician Chen Yue crouches at the rear, operating a miniature drone to monitor the movements of the fiends throughout the area; and Wang Ziqi is responsible for assault, command, and delivering the fatal blow.
Five men, five guns, scarred bodies, and unwavering courage—these are the epitome of countless armed squads fighting bloody battles outside the fortress.
In the Fiendish Realm, there is a bottom line etched into the genes of every individual: mortals must not be killed, fellow human beings must not be abandoned, only fiendish spirits should be slain, and one's own kind should not be harmed.
After ten years of hell, humanity is nearly wiped out; infighting will only hasten their demise. Inside and outside the walls, all armed squads, garrisons, and self-defense forces, even with their own conflicts, will never harm the living. This is the last vestige of humanity's conscience and bottom line in this desperate world.
"Chen Yue, lock onto the location of the Blood Leech, don't let it burrow underground." Wang Ziqi spoke again, his tone more serious. He slowly raised his rifle, aiming at the street scene clearly reflected in the scope.
The Corpse Demon slithered along, chunks of rotting flesh peeling away to reveal blackened bones beneath. Its empty eye sockets darted about, ready to pounce on any living creature it sensed. The Shadow Spirit resembled a black human skin, clinging to the ground and walls, almost blending into the shadows. Only upon close inspection could one see its constantly contorting, weeping face—eerie and terrifying.
Beneath the ruins of a collapsed supermarket, a long, sticky, dark brown giant worm was slowly wriggling. Its suckers left wet marks on the cement ground, emitting a nauseating stench—it was the Blood Leech Fiend that Su Qing had mentioned.
Disgusting, terrifying, deadly.
Wang Ziqi felt a churning in his stomach, but he forced it down. He had seen far more disgusting evil spirits, his teammates drained of their life force by the Blood Leech Fiend, and the horrific sight of cubs bursting from their bodies. Fear was etched into his very bones, but he could not back down.
His retreat means his family inside the fortified area will have one less supply and one less chance to survive.
"Captain, shall we make a move?" Lin Ye's voice was tinged with impatience. The heavy machine gun was already loaded. "If we drag this out any longer, we might attract even more evil spirits."
"Wait." Wang Ziqi's pupils narrowed slightly as he stared intently at the Shadow Demon's movement. "Once the Shadow Demon leaves the blind spot in the wall, I'll take out headshots on the Corpse Demons. Zhao Hu will move up to hold it off, Lin Ye, you'll provide cover fire, and Su Qing, keep a close eye on the Blood Leech Demon. If it moves, immediately give a warning."
"clear!"
Everyone held their breath. In the ruins, only the low roar of the evil spirit, the whistling of the wind through broken bones, and the suppressed heartbeats of the five people could be heard.
The terror didn't come from screams, but from the deathly silence that threatened to engulf you at any moment.
Wang Ziqi slowly closed his left eye, his right eye pressed firmly against the scope, his fingertip on the trigger, steady as a rock. His face was expressionless, only the murderous intent in his eyes grew stronger, his brows remained tightly furrowed, his jaw clenched so tightly that even the veins on his temples bulged slightly.
This is the composure honed through ten years of fighting, and it is also the only means of survival for the Hunter of Killers.
Just as the Shadow Spirit slowly emerged from the shadows, Wang Ziqi's eyes flashed, and he abruptly pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
The sound of the silenced rifle was muffled and short. The specially made blood-slaying bullet accurately pierced the head of a rotting corpse demon. Black rotting blood and demonic fluid exploded instantly. The rotting corpse demon swayed and then collapsed to the ground with a thud.
"Let's do it!"
At a single command, the battle erupted instantly.
"Da da da da da—!"
The roar of the heavy machine gun ripped through the deathly silence, and specially made demon-piercing bullets poured out like a torrential rain, slamming into the horde of rotting corpses. Blood and flesh flew everywhere, and demonic fluid splattered in all directions. Zhao Hu roared, hoisted the demon-piercing shield, and charged forward. The shield slammed into the rotting corpse, smashing its decaying body to pieces.
Holding a short blade, Su Qing moved nimbly through the ruins, specifically targeting the Shadow Spirits that attempted to ambush him. The blade sliced through the black rubber bodies, producing a sizzling sound of corrosive poison.
Chen Yue maneuvered the drone, circling continuously and broadcasting real-time updates on the movements of the evil spirits: "Captain, two more Corpse Evil Spirits are coming from the right, and the Blood Leech Evil Spirit has moved! It's heading towards Zhao Hu!"
Wang Ziqi's expression changed, his eyes turned cold, and without hesitation he turned his gun and aimed at the rapidly writhing, thick, long figure.
The Blood Leech was incredibly fast, its sticky body darting across the ground, its target Zhao Hu, who had his back to it. Once it entangled him, Zhao Hu would surely die.
"Zhao Hu, get out of the way!" Wang Ziqi shouted sharply, his tone urgent and sharp, his voice rising instantly, filled with unprecedented anxiety.
But it was too late.
The Blood Leech suddenly sprang up, its two-meter-long body like a foul-smelling whip, viciously wrapping around Zhao Hu's back. Its ring-shaped suction cups instantly opened, revealing terrifying mandibles inside. Zhao Hu didn't even have time to turn around; he could only desperately hold onto the Bloodthirsty Shield, his pupils shrinking, revealing a look of despair.
Wang Ziqi's heart leaped into his throat. His brows furrowed tightly, his face contorted with tension, and his eyes were filled with anxiety and helplessness.
He fired, but the bullet only created a small bloody hole in the Blood Leech, failing to stop its attack at all.
It’s over.
The thought had barely crossed Wang Ziqi's mind when, in the next second, an extremely fast black shadow suddenly leaped down from the top of the nearby high-rise ruins.
There was no wind, no roars, no unnecessary movements.
Only a cold spear tip flashed by in the hazy daylight.
"laugh--!"
The crisp, sharp sound instantly drowned out the gunshots and the screams of the demons.
The giant blood leech that was about to ensnare Zhao Hu suddenly stiffened, then was pierced through the middle, gushing out scalding blood and sticky bodily fluids, splattering all over the ground. Its massive body twitched a few times, then slumped limply to the ground, completely lifeless.
Everyone was stunned.
The gunfire stopped, the shouts stopped, even the wind seemed to stand still.
Zhao Hu stood there blankly, staring at the dead Blood Leech Demon in front of him, his face still showing shock.
The five members of the Falcon Squad all turned their heads in unison to look at the figure descending from the sky.
Amidst the ruins, a solitary figure stood silently, carrying a seemingly ordinary short gun on his back, dressed in simple black clothes, with a cold face and indifferent, icy eyes, as if the fatal blow just now was merely a trivial matter, like raising a hand.
He didn't look at anyone, but simply looked down at the dark, dull object in his palm, his brows furrowing almost imperceptibly.
Wang Ziqi stared blankly at the figure, his grip on the gun involuntarily loosening, a tidal wave of emotions churning within him.
Who is this person?
He had never seen such a person, either inside or outside the walls.
Calm, aloof, and powerful, like a peerless spear hidden in its sheath; when it moves, it is a fatal blow.
At this moment, Wu Wei simply withdrew the tip of his spear, his gaze sweeping over the five terrified humans in the arena, his face expressionless and his eyes utterly calm.
Shu's thoughts echoed softly in his sea of consciousness:
"Ordinary armed squad, no threat, no interference, no contact, continue mission."
Wu Wei nodded slightly, his eyes cold and desolate, and turned to step into the deeper ruins.
Wang Ziqi snapped back to his senses and spoke almost instinctively, his voice filled with the excitement and respect of someone who had just escaped a disaster:
"Sir! Please wait! Thank you for saving us!"
Wu Wei did not stop walking, leaving only a lonely and upright figure before disappearing among the broken walls and ruins.
There was no turning back, no response, no lingering affection.
It was as if saving them just now was merely a casual killing of an insignificant insect.
Wang Ziqi stood there, staring at the disappearing figure, unable to recover for a long time.
Little did he know that this suddenly appearing, mysterious powerhouse would become humanity's only light in this decade-long purgatory.
Little did they know that this encounter would completely rewrite the fate of the Fiend Realm.
