Chapter 23 The Undead
North of the Black Swamp lies a humus forest.
Even though the blinding white light outside the forest had already illuminated the earth, the light seemed to belong to this place filled with the smell of decay.
Several soldiers even brought out torches, looking around anxiously for fear of encountering some unspeakable evil spirit.
It's too dark. If you can't see clearly, a ghoul might pop out from behind some thick tree trunk covered in a sticky, unidentified liquid.
Everyone was on edge because of the cries of the unknown creatures in the forest.
"Buddy, if it weren't for rescuing the Hord family, I would never have advised you to venture into this forest."
"By the truth above, even though we have already crossed the Black Swamp, the road seems even more difficult to traverse."
Benjamin turned his head and saw Abby, his legs trembling, his arms wrapped around his thin body. He stared shakily in the direction of the torchlight.
He was more careful than anyone else.
"Pete, it's too late to say anything, isn't it?"
"Haha, you rascal, if it were any other lieutenant, they would have agreed to let me scout ahead alone without hesitation. After all, minimizing losses is a strategy, so I have to say, you're a trustworthy guy."
"Because you, Pete, also volunteered to take risks alone, didn't you? I don't want to let my comrades down."
Pete smiled, said nothing, and simply raised the torch and continued walking forward.
"Lieutenant, something's up!"
This time, the young soldier was smarter. He no longer fell behind, but instead tried to shout in Benjamin's direction in a low voice.
The group stretched out their torches and discovered a white spider web before them, like gauze wrapped around the tree trunk to form a nest.
"It seems the situation is getting worse, and it's not worth the risk anymore."
Pete moved closer, crouched down, and examined the marks.
"There are clear signs of a battle here. Based on my deduction... I think that human must have encountered the ghoul last night when the temperature was very low. At that time, the ground hadn't been soaked by the fog yet, so the ghoul would have chased him here."
Then he ran inside…” Pete pointed to the spider web ahead, “…and encountered a spider demon. The ghoul and the spider were fighting. Look, there are drag marks all over the ground. That’s the spider demon’s handiwork.”
Seeing the situation before him, even Benjamin broke out in a cold sweat.
But he had to be thankful that Pete was by his side; he was incredibly lucky, not only because of his extensive tracking experience, but also because of his thorough knowledge of evil spirits.
Being able to reconstruct what happened before can help analyze whether continuing is the right decision.
Benjamin thought for a moment. If he gave up now, he would lose today's log reward.
But when facing the spider, he unconsciously clenched his fist...
He has been afraid of spiders since he was a child, let alone spiders that can weave so many webs. Just imagining that disgusting creature with its claws and teeth can make his scalp tingle.
Just as Benjamin was about to turn around, Pete squatted down, picked up the spider web from the tree trunk, and rubbed it in his hands.
Benjamin looked at the sticky spiderweb that was almost sticking his fingers together and felt like gagging.
"Fortunately, it's not the big one from the cave, it's just a spider larva on the surface. If we want to continue, it's not impossible..."
It would have been better if he hadn't mentioned it; once it was mentioned, Benjamin even felt an itch all over his body.
He quickly pulled at his hair, feeling as if his head was crawling with tiny spiders.
He recalled a time from his childhood when he picked up a broom to clean the spiders from the large web on the doorframe, only to find that the spiders were gone when he finally removed it.
He only reached up to pull it off when he felt an itch on his neck, and realized that the little spider had been on his head the whole time.
Recalling this scene, Benjamin could no longer hold back.
Forget about rewards; compared to the big guy Pete was talking about, he was more afraid of the invisible and intangible little spider.
"retreat!"
"Oh! Mr. Hord, that's the most correct order I've heard all day!" If they weren't still in the danger of the forest, Abby would have clapped and celebrated.
Pete, of course, wouldn't argue; he immediately turned around.
But suddenly,
"Waaah—! Waaah—!"
It was as if someone had been kidnapped and gagged; in the silent forest, the discordant cries for help sounded particularly jarring.
Benjamin listened carefully; the source of the sound was probably no more than twenty meters away.
"Damn it."
Benjamin couldn't help but click his tongue; it was obvious that the businessman had overheard their conversation.
This was supposed to be exciting news, but Benjamin was anything but happy.
He still couldn't resist touching the pile of webs, and even the thought of crawling into the sticky spider web made him break out in goosebumps!
Seeing Benjamin's troubled expression, Pete seemed to sense his unease and said, "No rush, we can use torches to light the spider webs and clear a path, but we need to be quick. Don't forget that spiders have very sensitive senses..."
After saying that, Pete leaned closer and said, "Although I know you can detect virtue, as far as I know, it's not always successful, is it? If we really can't rescue them, we'll retreat."
Sensing Pete's good intentions, Benjamin gritted his teeth and said, "Okay, let's do it this way."
Upon hearing the order, the soldiers stretched out their torches and approached the spider web.
Although spider webs are not flammable, they do melt when heated.
In a matter of moments, as more and more spiderwebs collapsed, even more webs were pulled down like a curtain...
"Hurry! Move quickly!"
The soldiers quickly expanded the burning area, and a dripping sound could be heard from the forest.
A hole was forcibly opened in the spiderweb, and Benjamin, enduring the discomfort, went inside.
Is anyone there?
"Woo! Woo!"
As the torches were raised high, a human-shaped cocoon, entangled in white spiderwebs, was finally visible amidst the red and yellow flames. It writhed and twisted, trying to attract everyone's attention.
At this moment, John, who hadn't said much all day, took the lead and stepped forward to try to untie the human-shaped cocoon.
Benjamin noticed that John did not burn the spider silk directly with a torch, but carefully melted it with a knife.
Through his previous observations, he discovered that spider silk has a low ignition point, but once it melts and sticks to the skin, it could cause more severe burns or even tear the skin.
It seems John is quite the thinker.
As the humanoid cocoon was peeled away layer by layer, a long, dark blue robe slowly slid off, and Benjamin could see the person inside twisting and struggling, with their arms already hanging out.
Pete rushed forward to help tear open the spider silk cocoon, and finally, the person inside fell out.
"Hey, you're safe now, are you alright?"
Pete shook the man's shoulder, while Benjamin stepped forward to explain the situation, such as demanding that the man admit to being a member of the Hod family.
Just as he approached, a large hand suddenly reached out, and Pete pushed Benjamin in the chest, causing Benjamin to stagger backward.
John was also pulled back by Petra...
"They're...the undead! Fuck!!"
