Containing monsters? Call me 749 the God of Slaughter!

Chapter 10: The True Philosophy of the Practitioner?

A look of surprise flashed in Li Haotian's eyes.

The "practitioners" that Chu Shanhe talks about seem to be different from his understanding of them.

He thought for a moment and asked, "Director Chu, what exactly are the practical faction's thoughts?"

Chu Shanhe said: "The pragmatist school refers to those who proceed from reality."

"When containing strange objects, the investigators themselves are responsible for assessing the containment risks."

"If the risk of casualties is too great, choose to kill rather than contain."

"But if the risks of containment are manageable, containment should still be the primary approach."

"If you kill every monster you encounter, that's not what a real combat style is."

"Instead, it should be called," Chu Shanhe paused slightly, "the Killing Faction!"

Li Haotian immediately understood: "So, you believe that last night's incident involving the infant spirits was a manageable risk for containment?"

"That's right."

Chu Shanhe stood up, walked to the window, and turned his back to Li Haotian: "The appearance of the strange creature is too mysterious."

"Therefore, we need to study their ecology, behavioral patterns, and weaknesses."

"Then develop early warning systems, protective equipment, and even... treatments."

"The infant spirit you encountered last night may have been an innocent child in life, but became like that for some reason."

"We can't purify its resentment right now, but who knows if we'll discover a way to reverse that process in the future?"

Li Haotian fell silent again.

Chu Shanhe's philosophy, or rather the philosophy of Bureau 749, is idealistic and grand.

But he has a system that requires him to kill enemies in order to become stronger.

In this dangerous alien world, only by becoming stronger can one survive and have a chance to unravel the secret of how one was transported here.

More importantly, he did not entirely agree with the practical approach.

Even low-level anomalies can pose a life-threatening risk to investigators.

For example, the drowned corpse he encountered for the first time, and the infant spirit he saw last night.

Fighting monsters is not a competitive sport.

In determining the winner and loser, life and death are often also decided.

Using human lives as the price for research is far too high.

It's unfair to those who died at the hands of those monsters.

Unless those monsters do not harbor malice towards humans.

Otherwise, the only way to stop evil is to kill!

Thinking of the scene last night where the infant spirit deceived him and launched a surprise attack, Li Haotian took a deep breath and reaffirmed his resolve: "I understand what you mean."

"But on the battlefield, risk assessment cannot be specifically quantified."

"Even the slightest act of mercy could lead to death."

"To truly solve the problem, we must completely eliminate the threat at its root!"

Chu Shanhe turned around, looked at him, and said with a complicated expression, "You and your sister look a lot alike."

These words stunned Li Haotian.

"Li Mingyue said something similar back in the lab."

Chu Shanhe walked back to the table and took out another document from the drawer.

This one is even thinner, only a few pages: "The bureau actually knew part of her research project at the time."

"We...we even provided some technical support."

Li Haotian took the document and quickly flipped through it.

Inside are some technical parameters and experimental records, dated three years ago, and signed by Li Mingyue.

"What exactly is my sister researching?"

"Dimensional stability." Chu Shanhe sat down.

"Simply put, it's about studying why anomalies occur in our world."

"Her view is that some kind of dimensional rift suddenly appeared in our world, allowing things from other dimensions to seep in, which led to these changes."

"If this theory holds true, we might be able to find a way to close the cracks and solve the problem at its root."

Li Haotian's heart raced: "Then her disappearance..."

"Something went wrong in the experiment." Chu Shanhe's expression was grave.

"The energy fluctuations recorded at the time far exceeded expectations, and the entire laboratory was sealed off."

"By the time our people arrived, Li Mingyue was already gone."

"There was no body or blood at the scene; it was as if she had suddenly vanished from the face of the earth."

"Didn't you continue the search?"

"We searched, we used all the resources," Chu Shanhe sighed, "but to no avail."

"But I've always felt that she might still be alive, just... no longer in this world."

Not in this world!?

These words struck Li Haotian like a hammer blow.

Because in a way, he isn't actually a person of this world!

"Director Chu, I want to reopen the investigation," he said, "in my own way!"

"Your method?" Chu Shanhe stared at him intently. "If your method is like last night's, I advise you to be careful."

"Not everyone in the bureau is as willing to give you a chance as I am. Zhao Wenbin has already noticed you, and he is very dissatisfied with your behavior last night."

"I'll be careful." Li Haotian's eyes flashed, and he nodded slightly.

Chu Shanhe picked up a card from the table and handed it to him: "This is temporary access to the No. 7 shelter, valid until tomorrow."

"That place contains samples related to your sister's lab accident. You can go take a look; you might find something."

Li Haotian took the card.

It was printed with the words "749 Bureau - Shelter No. 7" and a string of codes.

"Remember, this is just to give you an overview of the situation."

Chu Shanhe said seriously, "Don't do anything out of line."

"The shelter has a very high security level; anyone who violates the rules will be shot on the spot."

"I see."

As Li Haotian left the office, he felt the card in his hand was heavy.

Containment facility number seven, the samples my sister was researching, and the possibility of something "not in this world"... it's all becoming more and more mysterious.

......

The next day was Sunday.

Li Haotian changed into casual clothes and took the bus back to Jiangcheng University.

He planned to first go to the school to retrieve his sister's belongings, and then visit the shelter.

The campus remains the same.

Students hurried by with their books, couples strolled along the lake, and cheers erupted from the basketball court.

Everything was so normal, so normal it was almost unbelievable.

Li Haotian went to the security office first.

The man on duty was a middle-aged man. When he heard that the man wanted to claim his belongings from three years ago, he shook his head: "Things that old are no longer here."

"Go ask the physics department, maybe her advisor."

In the physics department office building, Li Haotian found Professor Chen Jianguo's office.

After knocking, a voice inside said, "Come in."

Chen Jianguo is an elderly man in his sixties with gray hair and thick glasses.

He saw Li Haotian and paused, then asked, "You are...?"

"Hello Professor Chen, I am Li Mingyue's younger brother, Li Haotian."

Chen Jianguo's expression immediately became complicated.

There was guilt, regret, and a hint of... nervousness?

"Oh, it's Mingyue's younger brother," he stood up. "Sit down, sit down."

"About your sister...sigh, it's such a shame."

"Professor, I've come to ask if my sister's belongings are still intact?"

"I want to keep something as a memento."

Chen Jianguo adjusted his glasses: "Most of his belongings were handed over to the police at the time."

"However, she still has some personal belongings at school, which I've been keeping safe for her. Please wait a moment."
