Demon Slayer: I am a Demon

Chapter 5: Blue Spider Lily

Looking at the warm sunlight pouring down from the cave entrance, the evil spirit seemed to have seen the most terrifying thing in the world. Almost instinctively, it retreated until it was deeper into the cave and confirmed that not a single ray of the warm sunlight would shine on it. Only then did the evil spirit breathe a sigh of relief.

Only then did the evil spirit realize that Su Mu had not stopped walking and was still heading towards the cave exit, almost touching the warm sunlight pouring down.

"You'll die if you get exposed to sunlight."

An almost terrified, trembling voice came from the demon's mouth.

Su Mu paused slightly. He could feel the instinctive fear in his body, and his heart pounded for no reason. He felt as if he were facing death.

What is the most ordinary sunlight for humans is, at this moment, the most terrifying thing in the world for Su Mu.

Just as a demon's instinctual craving for human flesh and blood is deeply ingrained in its instincts, so too is its fear of sunlight. In fact, as it gets closer to the sunlight, the craving for flesh and blood disappears, replaced only by fear of the sunlight before it. Its instincts urge it repeatedly to stay away from the warm sunlight.

Su Mu stood there, looking at the sunlight streaming through the cave entrance. The sunlight that was once so commonplace for humans was now something he could only dream of but never reach, now that he had become a demon.

Despite the overwhelming fear that filled his heart, Su Mu wore a relaxed smile.

Because at this moment, the constant yearning for flesh and blood that had always surged in his heart was completely unfelt.

He could feel that his body's instinctive craving for flesh and blood had not disappeared, but was suppressed by his body's instinctive fear of sunlight, a fear of facing death directly.

For Su Mu, although death was equally terrifying, at least he had a moment to catch his breath. His taut will to resist his body's thirst for flesh and blood was given a brief respite, like a tightly strung string about to snap being pulled back and relieved.

He felt his body's instinctive fear of sunlight, felt every cell in his body trembling with dread, felt his body constantly reminding him to retreat into the darkness of the cave depths, but even so, he slowly approached the place where the sunlight poured down, getting closer and closer.

Despite his body's instincts constantly resisting, he slowly but firmly reached out his hand towards the rising sunlight.

"A madman, a madman..."

The evil spirit behind him almost screamed when it saw Su Mu's actions, looking at Su Mu as if he were a monster.

As his fingers drew closer to the warm sunlight, the fear of death almost completely overwhelmed him, but he still trembled and slowly stretched his fingers into the sunlight.

When sunlight shines on your fingers, you can see them like snowflakes under the scorching sun, slowly dissipating and disappearing from this world bit by bit.

Su Mu stood still, quietly watching his fingers disappear little by little, before withdrawing his hand and retreating into the dark depths of the cave.

Only when they were completely away from the sunlight and their whole bodies were completely shrouded in darkness did the instinctive trembling in their bodies subside slightly.

"You're absolutely insane! Aren't you afraid of dying?"

The demons beside him looked at Su Mu as if he were a monster. Bathing in sunlight was something no demon dared to imagine, not even the progenitor of demons, Muzan Kibutsuji, dared to expose himself to the sun.

Su Mu ignored the evil spirit beside him and looked down at his fingers, which were melting in the sunlight. He looked at the melting wound. In the past, such a wound would have healed almost quickly and a new finger would have grown. But at this moment, although the wound felt like it was healing, the healing speed was dozens of times slower than before.

"It seems that sunlight can not only destroy the bodies of evil spirits, but also greatly slow down the recovery speed of areas damaged by sunlight."

Su Mu looked at his fingers and murmured softly.

"Are you crazy? Putting your finger in the sunlight just to see this? You're insane. Even a Nichirin Blade from the Demon Slayer Corps can't compare to being directly exposed to sunlight."

The evil spirit beside him looked at Su Mu as if he were a monster. It had seen many evil spirits, but none of them were as crazy as Su Mu.

Demons cannot bask in sunlight; this is common knowledge for demons and an instinct they are aware of. No demon dares to attempt this, not even someone as powerful as Muzan Kibutsuji.

In this world, no ghost can bask in the sunlight.

"We are creatures of darkness; no ghost can bask in the sunlight."

The evil spirit whispered nearby.

"Can no ghosts bask in the sunlight?"

Su Mu murmured to himself.

"Yes, don't have such delusions, and that is also our flaw as ghosts."

The demon beside him continued to speak at this moment, but his voice was somewhat unwilling. After all, as a human, the most ordinary thing for a human—bathing in the sunlight—was something that could never be achieved after becoming a demon.

Su Mu simply stared at his fingers, remaining silent. To the demons of this world, they were like rats in the sewers, forever destined to hide in the darkness. Even the progenitor of demons, Muzan Kibutsuji, could not overcome this flaw.

But if he remembers correctly, Nezuko, who eventually became a demon, overcame this flaw and became the first demon to be able to bask in the sunlight.

The reason why Nezuko was able to overcome the flaws of being a demon was because she had eaten the blue spider lily.

"Blue spider lily".

Su Mu murmured to himself, feeling that he had to get his hands on this thing that Muzan Kibutsuji had sought for thousands of years without success. Whether it was the demon's inability to suppress its desire for flesh and blood, or the fact that it could only hide in the darkness like a rat in the sewers, Su Mu could not accept either of these things.

In my memory, the reason why Muzan Kibutsuji has been unable to find the Blue Spider Lily for thousands of years is because it is a flower that only blooms during the day.

How could a demon, unable to bask in the sunlight and forced to hide in the darkness, possibly find this blue spider lily that only blooms during the day?

For him, knowing this news made it not impossible to find the blue spider lily.

If I remember correctly, blue spider lilies grow where Tanjiro Kamado lives.
