Demon Slayer: I am a Demon

Chapter 2: The Bottom Line

"Uncle, why are you so good to me?"

The girl's childish voice made Su Mu pause slightly.

He only said he would bring her some food. In reality, he was just looking at the little girl, who was skin and bones and had to scavenge for food to fill her stomach. It was so pitiful. He was just showing her pity. Was that considered being very kind to her?

"It's just some food."

Su Mu's nonchalant reply meant that, to him, it was something he could easily obtain.

The girl looked up at the man with some confusion. Food was really precious; when you're hungry, the feeling of hunger is really hard to bear.

At that moment, Su Mu also looked at the little girl.

His clothes were tattered and his face was pale from lack of nutrition, with his cheeks even slightly sunken, but even so, it could not conceal the spirituality emanating from him.

At that moment, the other person raised their eyes and looked at them with bright eyes.

Meeting her bright eyes, for a fleeting moment, it was as if he saw the girl's past, and vague images seemed to float into his mind.

impoverished family background

Parents who frequently beat and scold their children.

Not enough to eat, not enough to wear...

These are all things the little girl is experiencing now. What are just simple foods to her are incredibly precious to the other person.

"Please wait for me a moment."

He spoke gently to the girl.

The girl tilted her head, looking at him with a puzzled expression.

Su Mu didn't say anything. He lightly stepped on the roof and leaped up like a bird. In a few flashes, he disappeared from the girl's sight.

Not long after, Su Mu returned again, and the girl, who was very obedient to him, was still waiting for him in the same spot.

"for you."

Su Mu handed over a chicken leg he was holding.

The girl paused, especially at the aroma emanating from the chicken leg, which made her throat involuntarily move slightly.

"Is it for me?"

The girl seemed somewhat skeptical.

"Um."

Su Mu nodded and then handed the chicken leg to the girl.

Only when she felt the warmth of the chicken leg in her hand and smelled its aroma did the girl realize that the man really wanted to give her the chicken leg.

The warmth of the chicken leg in her palm made her feel like she was dreaming; she had never eaten a chicken leg before.

"Eat quickly."

Su Mu said in a low voice.

"Um."

The girl picked up a chicken leg, stuck out her tongue, and gently licked it, like a kitten licking water.

Su Mu reached out and gently ruffled the girl's hair. Her hair was dry and yellow from lack of nutrition and messy from neglect. "From now on, come over every night and I'll bring you something delicious."

The girl looked up at him with her pinkish-purple eyes.

Chicken drumsticks seemed to be a precious food for the girl, and she was always reluctant to eat them. She only finished them under Su Mu's supervision. After the girl finished eating, Su Mu let her go back.

Under the pitch-black night, the little girl walked back, looking much more relaxed and full of youthful energy than before.

Su Mu stood under the moonlight, watching the girl's figure disappear from sight before raising his head to look at the full moon in the sky. His hand involuntarily pressed against his abdomen. At this moment, his body felt a strong hunger, and his stomach felt like it was filled with countless acidic churning, as if urging him to find food to fill his stomach quickly.

However, for him, his food was completely different from the girl's. If the girl's food was rice balls and chicken legs, then his food was the girl, or rather, his former kindred spirit.

This was obviously unacceptable to Su Mu, who was once human. Even as a demon, how could he possibly eat his former kind?

But that's how evil spirits are; they have an extraordinary craving for human flesh and blood. If they don't consume flesh and blood to alleviate their craving for a long time, this craving will accumulate over time, and that instinctive desire will become more and more intense.

Feeling an even stronger craving for flesh and blood in his body than yesterday, Su Mu's face looked extremely pale. He didn't even know how much longer he could hold on.

But no matter what, I will never cross the bottom line that I once held as a human being.

"call……"

He took a deep breath, suppressing his craving for flesh and blood, and focused his gaze on his mind.

In his mind, there was a character panel similar to that in a game.

My gaze fell upon it, and the words on it appeared clearly in my mind.

Name: Su Mu

Race: Demon

Lifespan: Unlimited

Abilities: Immortality (pseudo), super healing ability, robust physique

Flaws: Sensitive to light, wisteria blossoms, Nichirin sword

Status: Hungry, Cursed (from Muzan Kibutsuji)

Blood Demon Art: None

Physical fitness: 3.1 (The physical fitness of a normal adult is 1.)

Agility: 3.2 (The agility of a normal adult is 1.)

Strength: 3.1 (The strength of a normal adult is 1.)

Mental state: 1.2 (The normal mental state for an adult is 1.)

The information that came to mind was simple and clear, allowing him to understand his own situation in great detail.

As a demon, his physique, agility, and strength are almost three times that of a normal human.

Even with rigorous training, it is almost impossible for an average human to improve their physical strength, agility, and power to exceed three times that of a normal person.

Generally speaking, if a person can exceed three times their own size, they have already broken their own limits and transcended the limitations of the human body.

It can be said that as a demon, it is a powerful individual that transcends the limitations of the human body in terms of spirit. Ordinary humans have almost no resistance in front of demons. Therefore, demons no longer regard humans as their own kind, but as food.

Of course, the reason why demons crave humans is not only due to the difference in individual strength between the two, but also because of the demons' instinctive need for human flesh and blood. Moreover, human flesh and blood can promote the evolution of the demons' bodies, making them even stronger.

Besides becoming powerful, turning into a demon also grants one near-immortality in terms of lifespan.

To live on is the most desirable thing in the world.

If there is any flaw, it is probably only that he fears sunlight, can only hide in darkness forever, and cannot control his instincts as a demon.

For Su Mu, the most unbearable thing was the uncontrollable instinct of being a demon, the uncontrollable desire to devour flesh and blood. If he did not devour flesh and blood, that desire and his ever-deepening hunger would surge into his heart like a tide.

Perhaps, if we just lowered our standards a little, such unbearable things wouldn't happen.

But for Su Mu, if he were to abandon this bottom line, wouldn't he have completely lost his true nature?

At that time... was he still himself?
