My Terrible Life in Those Years
18. Personal assessment
The sales department was completely full; not a single seat was empty.
Liu Mei finally managed to find me an empty office, but it's the closest one to Aunt Shu's office. Goodness, my luck hasn't been great lately. Now that I'm right under her nose, it'll probably be easy for her to mess with me.
"Miss Liu, are there any other seats available? This spot seems to have bad feng shui!"
I quickly asked Liu Mei, "If the position is fixed, it will be much more difficult to change it later."
Liu Mei was no longer the cold, unapproachable person she had been when she refused me entry. Instead, she was all smiles and said, "Young Master Jiang, it's already quite an achievement to find you an empty seat. Besides, President Shu said you'd be working as an assistant in Sales Department One, and this is the only empty seat in the entire department."
My heart sank.
"I see your administration area is quite spacious. You could arrange for me to sit there; working with a few beautiful women will definitely lift my spirits!"
Liu Mei knew I was joking, but she was still amused by me. As she helped me check the stationery, she would occasionally glance at the passageway between the two large offices.
"Look at this spot! Where is the Sales Department's seat? This huge partition completely separates Sales Department from me, and I'm sandwiched between the two big bosses and the break room! My dear Liu, this is going to kill me!"
As I tidied up the space, I laughed and joked with Liu.
Just then, a loud cough came from behind: "Xiao Liu, quickly get him settled in his seat, throw him the company's basic information, and tell him to read it within an hour. Then give him a performance review. If he gets less than 60 points, deduct 100."
Ms. Shu, the career woman, didn't come out of her office; she just peeked out halfway, but her voice was loud enough for the two of us to hear.
Sister Liu was startled and rushed back to the front desk, bringing me a thick booklet of company information. Then, while Aunt Shu was back in her office, she quietly pointed out a few key pages to me, presumably the main content of the assessment.
Liu Meizi rushed back to the administrative district, leaving me behind with a thick stack of documents.
I was dumbfounded. My goodness, is this basic information? Is there really a thick stack of basic information, hundreds of pages thick?
It's time to show them my photographic memory.
Fifty minutes later, I suddenly realized that I had been exaggerating in my mind.
This isn't a novel, nor a storybook; it's just basic company information. There's absolutely no sensitive memory to connect the dots for me.
Aunt Shu didn't come out during this time. I checked the time on my computer and took the opportunity to go to the administrative area.
"Sister Liu, could I take a look at the assessment form first?"
I looked at her pitifully.
Just like a pug looking at its owner.
I've always believed that a true man should be able to bend and stretch. Now that I'm at the mercy of others, I don't think it's a loss to swallow my pride and ask my colleagues for help.
Sister Liu gave me an amused look, but her attitude was firm: "This is absolutely unacceptable. If they find out, I'll be implicated. Didn't I just tell you the key points?"
"The problem is, those few places you pointed out each have several thousand words of content. I could barely read them all in an hour, let alone memorize them!"
Zhou Tong also leaned over and rested his head on the desk.
Her clothes weren't tight, and when she lay down, the neckline loosened slightly, and my eyes involuntarily peered over.
The mountain peak wasn't very high, and it was tightly wrapped in clothes, but its color was truly... white!
I quickly glanced at it, then looked up just in time to avoid her noticing the sty in my eye.
"Zhou, please help me! I can't let her catch me on the first day and deduct my pay. If she does, I won't be able to pay her back in a month!" She sounded like she was selling herself into slavery.
Zhou Tong smiled and pursed her lips.
"This really won't do. If we get caught, we're all finished. Do you want to be the only one arrested, or all of us arrested together?"
"But if you really don't know, just say so. President Shu likes to hear the truth, so don't brag or make things up. Unless it's something extremely difficult, you'll usually get away with it!"
"Oh, I see," I quickly composed myself, gave my three younger sisters a sharp look, and hurried back to my seat.
A few minutes later, I quickly skimmed through it again from beginning to end.
The shock in my heart never subsided.
The company is real, it's fucking huge.
This is just the headquarters; there's another production facility in the suburbs.
There are various medium and large-sized production machines that I have never heard of or seen before.
Besides the sales department, there are also planning, media, and more than a dozen other departments, with a total of over 300 people.
I breathed a sigh of relief. GG Company, there must be very few companies that can reach such a large scale.
The last few pages are the company's honor page.
What are these awards: one of the top ten GG companies in the province, an outstanding creative award, inclusion in the mainland's wealth list, and many other foreign awards that I can't understand, with lots of English words that I can't comprehend at all.
The more I look at it, the more shocked I become. This company is incredibly powerful!
Now I finally understand why Aunt Shu's shoes cost nearly two thousand!
An hour was up, and I closed my notebook.
After browsing through all this information, a feeling suddenly came to mind: it wouldn't be so bad to actually work here.
Xiao Liu arrived on time, put away her notebook, and went to the office to ask President Shu whether the assessment should begin.
A moment later, she came out, swaying her hips.
"Jiang Ning, President Shu wants you to go to her office."
"Huh? Wasn't it supposed to be an assessment?"
"President Shu said she'll personally assess you!" Little Sister Liu gave me a strange look.
He lowered his voice and said, "Are you hiding something from us?"
I was extremely surprised and quickly shook my head.
"Then why would President Shu personally assess a mere assistant like you? There must be something going on!"
Watching her walk away quickly, I felt a chill in my heart.
Oh no! I was thinking that if it were Xiaoliu's assessment, I could sacrifice my looks or something to get through the first hurdle.
Who would have thought that Aunt Shu would actually come to assess me personally?
Now that Xiaoliu has done this, she'll probably go back and whisper with those two gossipy women again, and there will definitely be another round of speculation about the nature of my relationship with President Shu.
I composed myself, took a small sip of water, and straightened my clothes.
Knock on the door.
She was on the phone when she saw me knocking. She pointed to the chair in front of her desk and told me to sit down and wait.
I hesitated. Last time I overheard her on the phone, I had a really bad time. This time, she's asking me to go over and listen to her on the phone again. Will it make things worse?
Gritting his teeth, he stomped his foot and went straight to sit down.
Anyway, she's the one who asked me to go over, and I've gotten used to having bad luck these past few days, so what am I afraid of!
