Chapter 74 National Pokémon Hatchery and Breeding Center
The morning after arriving in the capital, Lin Dao was in the small living room of the state guesthouse, teaching Shen Yu'er how to better establish initial trust and understanding with the newly tamed Snivy and Bubble Squirrel.
From understanding their subtle body language to establishing positive connections through specific frequency of calls and food rewards.
The Snivy held its head high with elegance, seemingly "testing" Shen Yu'er's comprehension, while two bubble squirrels squatted obediently to the side, their bright black eyes full of curiosity.
Just as Shen Yu'er was trying to interact with the Snivy using a specially made grass-type energy cube, the doorbell rang.
The visitor was Zhao Lan, the director of the National Pokémon Phenomenon Response Bureau.
Unlike the capable, decisive, and slightly serious bureau chief in the video conference, Zhao Lan, who visited in private, changed into a simple beige knit sweater and trousers, her long hair casually tied up, and her face without makeup had a cheerful smile. She was less official and more approachable, like a girl next door.
"Mr. Lin, Ms. Shen, I will be directly responsible for your itinerary and safety during your stay in the capital."
"We've only known each other online before, but we've finally met in person today. Please take care of me." Zhao Lan smiled and extended her hand, her tone relaxed.
Lin Dao stepped forward to shake hands, his smile sincere: "Sister Zhao, please don't be so polite in private. You can call me Lin Dao or Xiao Lin."
Shen Yu'er quickly gave the energy cube to the vine snake, then stood up and said, "Director Zhao, you can just call me Yu'er or Xiao Yu."
Zhao Lan readily agreed, "Alright, then I won't stand on ceremony, Xiao Lin, Yu'er."
She then got straight to the point, telling Lin Dao, "The Dos Federation delegation acted very quickly. Upon learning of your arrival, after their meeting with higher-level officials this morning, they hoped to have a formal exchange with you this afternoon on Pokémon-related issues."
"At that time, Vice Minister Li Qiang of the Ministry of Public Security and I will accompany you."
"No problem, Sister Zhao, just do as you arrange." Lin Dao nodded in agreement.
Zhao Lan gestured to her assistant behind her to coordinate the details of the afternoon's meeting, then took the tablet handed to her by her assistant, quickly glanced at it, and looked up to ask.
"So, Xiaolin, what are your plans for this morning? After news of your arrival in the capital spread, several departments submitted applications to meet with you."
She scrolled through the screen, displaying a long list of applications, from the Ministry of Energy to the Ministry of Education, from the Academy of Sciences to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Lin Dao was prepared: "Let's go to the National Pokémon Hatchery and Breeding Center first."
"I made an appointment with Professor Tang Yan from the center. I'll go there as soon as I arrive in the capital. Some of his Pokémon eggs are in a rather unusual situation; they haven't shown any signs of hatching yet."
"Perfect timing, Professor Tang has also sent me several 'SOS' messages."
Zhao Lan smiled and immediately arranged the vehicles and routes.
"Then let's set off. I'll say hello to them on the way."
On the hovercar heading to the incubation center, Lin Dao watched the streets of the capital gradually returning to order, yet appearing even more orderly and solemn than those of Chengdu, and casually asked, "Sister Zhao, haven't you caught your own Pokémon yet?"
Upon hearing this, Zhao Lan sighed softly and shook her head.
"The situation in the capital is quite different from that in Chengdu. The Pokémon ecosystem around the city is relatively independent, and they are more cautious and even somewhat distant in their contact with us officials."
"I've tried it myself a few times, and the Pokémon I encountered were either extremely wary or showed little interest."
"A few young men in the bureau were lucky enough to capture a few at the ecological observation station in Miyun."
"Most of the colleagues who need it still have to go to Chengdu or the surrounding areas of Xinyuan City to work with our partners."
She paused for a moment, then said, "As the bureau chief, I've been so busy coordinating with all parties and dealing with emergencies lately that I simply can't spare the time to go out of town to 'stake out' a suitable partner."
"So we're thinking of waiting until the situation stabilizes further, or until our own incubation center is fully operational before making any decisions."
Lin Dao nodded understandingly: "That's how it is in the beginning. Wild Pokémon need time to observe and build trust with human society."
"That's why I strongly recommend starting by building trust with relatively stable groups that have already had initial contact, helping them breed, and at the same time searching nationwide for any Pokémon eggs that may be missing."
"Bringing the hatching and raising of newborn Pokémon into a controlled and friendly environment, allowing them to come into contact with kind humans from the moment they hatch, is a key step in breaking the deadlock and providing more ordinary people with the opportunity to become trainers."
"A large part of the design of New City also revolves around this concept."
Zhao Lan pondered: "Indeed, cultivating a bond from the 'egg' is much more successful and safer than sending newcomers directly to face wild Pokémon full of uncertainty."
"The situation at this incubation center serves as an important window for observation."
As they spoke, the hovercar had already left the main urban area and was heading northwest towards an area surrounded by low hills.
Before long, a unique architectural complex came into view.
The National Pokémon Hatchery and Breeding Center covers a large area, but the buildings are generally low in height.
The main buildings are a soft, warm white, mostly with smooth semi-circular or domed structures, connected by transparent corridors. From a distance, they look like giant eggshells scattered on the ground or carefully designed ecological greenhouses, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment.
The vehicle stopped in front of the main gate.
As soon as the vehicle came to a stop at the main entrance, a man in his fifties, wearing a white coat, with gray hair but a sprightly appearance, quickly came to greet us.
He is Professor Tang Yan, the head of the center.
He briefly greeted Zhao Lan and Shen Yu'er, then grabbed Lin Dao's wrist and eagerly walked into the building.
"Mr. Lin! We've been waiting for you!" Professor Tang spoke quickly, his voice tinged with obvious anxiety.
"Our center gathers Pokémon eggs from all over the country, and most of them hatch smoothly, especially those with a clear species background or common species."
"But there's a batch, dozens of them! Their vital signs are all normal, and their energy fluctuations are active, but there's still no sign of them hatching! I'm so worried my hair is almost turning white!"
The group followed Professor Tang into the center.
The interior design takes into full account the needs of Pokémon hatchlings of different types, simulating a variety of microenvironments: a shimmering shallow water area, a rocky area with artificial mountains and temperature control equipment, a forest area planted with various plants, and even a small dry area simulating sand.
Researchers or caretakers in light blue overalls were busy in each area.
They either record data, prepare nutrients, or interact with hatched Pokémon babies.
Lin Dao's gaze swept across the area, spotting goldfish and mosquito tadpoles playing in the water, tailed tadpoles and snake-striped bear cubs peeking out from the grass, caterpillars and unicorns feasting on the leaves, and even a few meows curiously observing them through the glass.
To his even greater surprise, in an environment simulating rocky hills, he spotted a slightly dazed, pink-cheeked Slowpoke lying by a pool sunbathing; while in another area with rocks to climb, a little Flame Monkey was energetically jumping around.
