Chapter 25 Seize the opportunity to take action
When I opened my eyes again, it was already around six o'clock in the afternoon.
Zhang Hui yawned, listening to Shi Jin's voice from the middle of the carriage. He nudged the head resting on Shi Jin's shoulder and shook him for a long time before finally waking him up. Xu Sanduo, that silly boy, had slept like a log the whole way.
"Everyone stand up!" Upon hearing Shi Jin's order, Zhang Hui pulled up the still dazed Xu Sanduo, told him to take his belongings, and get off the bus to eat.
After finishing their meal, they boarded the train, which was the infamous boxcar. Knowing Gao Cheng's bad temper, Zhang Hui, just to be safe, pulled Xu Sanduo to sit next to him.
......
After a night of transport, Zhang Hui didn't even know what time it was when he woke up.
"Waaah"
After hearing a long whistle, Zhang Hui knew that the station had been reached. Fortunately, Xu Sanduo next to him had already woken up, so he didn't have to bother to wake him.
Zhang Hui subtly pulled him back, and the two stood in the middle of the crowd, in the best possible position—neither too far forward nor too far back.
"Splash!"
As the people outside the tanker moved, the side door of the tanker where Zhang Hui was located was pulled open by the veterans outside. The dark and enclosed scene was suddenly flooded with sunlight, causing the new recruits in the front row to squint to adjust.
Before long, everyone began to look around with curiosity.
Zhang Hui glanced at Xu Sanduo. This time, he wasn't startled by the sudden appearance of the tank's cannon barrel, and therefore didn't give the classic French salute. He relaxed, and all his little antics hadn't been in vain; it seemed Xu Sanduo wouldn't be as disliked by Gao Cheng this time.
"Xu Sanduo, don't talk or dawdle, stick close to me, understand?" Zhang Hui reminded him again, and told him to stay close to him.
"Okay, Brother Cheng!" Xu Sanduo grinned, probably because he was far from home. Zhang Hui could see that Xu Sanduo's dependence on him was growing rapidly.
He also lacked the ambition of Cheng Cai in the original series and was still willing to help Xu Sanduo.
"Get off the bus and line up, hurry up."
Outside the carriage, after instructor He Hongtao had settled himself, he immediately gave the order for all the new recruits to take their luggage and disembark in turn.
[The plot has changed due to the host's actions; 3 unallocated points will be awarded as a reward!]
Seeing the reward arrive on time, Zhang Hui was secretly delighted.
Gao Cheng, who wasn't bothered by Xu Sanduo, simply stood to the side, looked at the new recruits getting off the bus, and nodded to them.
He then simply told everyone to be careful and walked to the back. Shi Jin saw this and quickly followed.
"Company Commander!"
Shi Jin, who had run up to him, grinned.
In a relatively good mood, Gao Cheng didn't give him the cold shoulder this time. Seeing him, he asked, "How did it go? Did you find any promising prospects this time?"
"They're all excellent; we should be able to produce a few outstanding individuals." Shi Jin was quite satisfied with the results of this recruitment drive.
"Company Commander, do you have any for us?" Shi Jin asked Gao Cheng, looking at the new equipment on the train.
"Of course, your 207 is about to be sent away." After replying to Shi Jin's question, she suddenly said something that made Shi Jin's heart tremble.
"Then I'd like to see him off," Shi Jin said quite naturally.
"Let me take you to your car," Gao Cheng agreed, showing his kindness.
Upon hearing this, Shi Jin's expression immediately turned solemn.
"yes!"
After saying that, Shi Jin stood up straight, saluted Gao Cheng, and ran off to find 207, who was about to retire.
Gao Cheng glanced at his back, then turned back to continue observing the new recruits.
As the company commander of the Seventh Steel Company, he came to this recruit company with ulterior motives; he absolutely could not let go of any promising recruits.
Watching the interaction between the two in the distance, Zhang Hui felt quite envious. The deep bond between comrades-in-arms is something that not everyone can have just because they want it.
As the whistle blew, Gao Cheng began his impassioned speech to the assembled recruits.
After the train carrying the old equipment departed, the new recruits, carrying their packs and standing in neat rows, were led to rows of dark green Dongfeng trucks amidst loud singing.
Once everyone had arrived, the new recruits got into their respective vehicles.
After a dusty journey of more than two hours, the truck delivered all the new recruits to their training camp.
After Zhang Hui got off the bus and gathered with the others, he saw Gao Cheng and He Hongtao already waiting for everyone on the platform in front.
He Hongtao, the instructor, had a very gentle personality. He first gave everyone a few words of encouragement.
Then, Gao Cheng, decisive and efficient, uttered the very words that had troubled Xu Sanduo for so long: "Whether you're a mule or a horse, let's see what you're made of! After three months, if you're a mule, you can leave; if you're a horse, follow me."
Zhang Hui's life in the recruit company began. After three days of preparation, formal recruit training started on the fourth day.
Xu Sanduo truly lives up to his reputation as someone Gao Cheng utterly despises. In just one week of basic training, he has already become the mule that everyone acknowledges was the first to show his true colors.
Because Zhang Hui couldn't participate in military training, he could only focus on tidying up his belongings. It took him several days and various methods to press the cotton in the quilt firmly so that he could quickly fold it into a standard tofu block.
He also slowly taught the other comrades in the fifth squad all the tips and tricks he knew. Zhang Hui was not jealous or scheming, and he would help as many comrades as possible who asked him questions.
However, in order to successfully enter the Steel Seventh Company three months later, Zhang Hui showed a strong fighting spirit in training after tidying up his personal belongings. He was always striving to be the first and never fall behind, which is a fitting description of his current situation.
Soon it was the first week's rest day. That evening after dinner, Zhang Hui noticed that Xu Sanduo was acting strangely. He decided to cheer up his fellow villager, so he secretly took Xu Sanduo out of the warehouse dormitory.
Then, Zhang Hui led Xu Sanduo to a secluded corner of the small building, grabbed him, and thought about how to explain the situation to him concisely and clearly.
He had witnessed Xu Sanduo's thought process firsthand during this time. In front of this idiot, simple and straightforward words were effective input.
"Sanduo, your natural physical attributes are too poor, so you have to work hard. You have to train hard here and strive for good results. Didn't Platoon Leader Shi Jin point to your chest and say, 'You have to work your ass off, only by training your ass off can you become a soldier'?"
"Then how can we risk our lives?" Xu Sanduo clearly couldn't understand this somewhat vague order and asked innocently.
Zhang Hui wanted to cover his face when he heard this, and could only say dejectedly, "Going all out means that when the class monitor gives you extra practice later, talk less and practice more. If others practice for one hour, you practice for two hours; if others rest, you don't rest. Do you understand?"
"I think I understand!" Xu Sanduo grinned, showing off his white teeth, and laughed without a care in the world.
Seeing him laugh again, Zhang Hui was furious and retorted sharply, "What the company commander meant was that 'horses' are those with good training results who can stay in the army, while 'mule' are those who just coast along and can't stay!"
"It's up to you whether you choose to stay in the military or not!" After saying this last sentence, Zhang Hui received the system's reward.
[The plot has changed due to the host's actions; 2 unallocated points will be awarded as a reward!]
Having secured his points, Zhang Hui stopped listening to Xu Sanduo's grumbling and pulled him into the dormitory to rest.
