Medieval: Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Chapter 38: Reactions from All Sides
In the evening, after dinner, Peter called a meeting around the campfire.
"Page 184, line 5 of the Bible: 'Even a good person walking in the wilderness should carry a spear to guard against wolves.' Today's experience of doing business by the roadside made me realize that even if we are willing to trade peacefully with others, they may still pull out a sword and rob us."
As Peter spoke, he scanned the attendees, noticing their expressions of agreement, and continued, "Therefore, while pursuing peaceful development, we must never abandon the use of force. Consequently, I have decided to adjust the division of labor within the camp and establish a dedicated combat team."
Those in the crowd who considered themselves to be quite skilled in martial arts straightened their chests.
Regarding combat groups
Peter announced, "I will be the group leader, Tom the deputy group leader, and Jerry the Mouse and John the Big Mouth as members. Each person will receive 1 penny per day."
Tom, Jerry, and John immediately stood up and bowed, saying, "Yes, sir!"
In terms of ability, John the Big Mouth could take on three Toms, and with his leadership skills, he was more suitable to be the deputy leader than Tom. However, the current era valued seniority and favoritism, and Tom, as one of Peter's earliest followers, deserved a deputy leader position as a reward for his loyalty. John the Big Mouth dared not vie for it.
Peter continued, "I allow each of you to recommend one person from the carpentry team as a reserve member. If they perform meritorious service in battle, they can become full members."
Tom, Jerry, and John perked up at the news. The combat team was being treated so well; whoever they recommended would have to remember their favor.
Charlie's seven-man team and John's eight-man team in the carpentry team were all eagerly waiting. The carpentry team leader, Doug, was such a scoundrel. He worked them to death and treated them like dirt. If they could escape this misery, even joining a combat team where people would die would be better than this.
Tom chose one of Charlie's Seven, a boy named Robert the White-Haired. This boy had white hair, was exceptionally quiet, was good at running, and had excellent shooting skills.
Jerry chose one of John's group of eight, a guy named Skinny Monkey, who was the third in command of John's group. He was tall and thin, with hands that reached past his knees, and was skilled with two short swords.
John chose Andrei, the red-bearded leader, as the second-in-command of his group of eight. Andrei was tall, short-tempered, and had a full red beard. He was skilled in using a shield and a short-handled axe.
"Alright, white-haired Robert, skinny Monkey, and red-bearded Andrei are joining the combat team as probationary members, but without pay. In the name of God, I declare your sins null and void. I hope you will be brave and fearless in battle and become full members soon. Let's give them a round of applause."
A round of applause erupted. Some offered heartfelt congratulations, while others were filled with envy, secretly resenting that they hadn't been chosen.
The three men quickly stepped forward, knelt on one knee to greet Peter, and thanked the person who had recommended them.
"About the carpentry team."
Peter continued, "Handsome Charlie is promoted to deputy foreman of the carpentry team. He will assist foreman Doug in managing logging and construction. His daily wage is 1 pfennig."
"Thank you, sir! Thank you, sir! I, handsome Charlie, will certainly manage the carpentry team well for you!"
Charlie had just been feeling dejected and envious of John the Big Mouth, the newcomer who had gone from a convict to a paid employee in such a short time. Now, upon hearing that he too had been exonerated and was receiving his salary, he immediately jumped up, knelt down on one knee, and thanked him profusely.
Doug the dog pouted. "Didn't the master just say he was going to help me manage the carpentry team? Is this ambitious guy trying to sideline me?"
While I was pondering this, Peter spoke again, "Doug, the eight prisoners we just captured have joined your carpentry team, with 300 crime points each. They're not exactly well-behaved yet, so have the older members keep a close eye on them. Don't be too harsh on our veteran employees; you can reduce their workload a bit."
"Yes, yes, yes. Sir, you are truly a kind and caring leader. I will certainly make thorough arrangements according to your instructions."
Doug readily agreed. The "veteran" employees of the logging team also cheered, thanking Peter for his magnanimity. As for the newcomers, they would certainly have to endure some hardship for the sake of the project's progress.
"Regarding the logistics team."
Peter looked between Romeo and Bodina, and finally said, "Romeo will be the group leader, and Bodina and Pavlena will be members. Each person will receive 1 pfennig per day."
"Yes, sir."
Bodina is getting on in years and her energy is waning. Logistics tasks involve more than just gathering and brewing medicine; they also include organizing the storeroom, preparing meals for the camp, and other miscellaneous matters. It would be better to leave these to the younger and more energetic Romeo.
"About the publicity team."
Peter smiled and looked at the old monk Martin, saying, "Brother Martin, you will be the group leader, responsible for spreading the voice of God and publicizing the heroic deeds of our camp. It's just a pity that you are the only one here at the moment, and your daily wage is 1 pfennig."
"Thank God, thank you, sir."
Old Brother Martin had been at the camp for about ten days. Seeing the camp changing little by little and how popular Peter's actions were, he gradually accepted the idea of spending his later years here. Faced with Peter's formal appointment, he chose to accept it with a bow.
"Ding! Monk Martin has voluntarily joined the host's ranks. Accept and open the character panel?"
"accept."

As expected of a seasoned veteran, he's far more capable than some country bumpkin. And does it really take 5 experience points to reach level 22?
As Peter observed the old monk, a warm current surged through Martin's body, and he felt his long-accumulated injuries and lingering pain rapidly disappear. His control over his body far surpassed that of Big Mouth John and the others, and he refused to believe it was just an illusion. He looked at Peter in surprise.
Is this Lord Peter's recognition and blessing upon me? I've heard Tom and Jerry boast before that they received the Lord's blessing and their strength was enhanced, and I always thought they were just embellishing their own image. Could it be true?
Peter also noticed the old monk's burning gaze, somewhat puzzled. Did Martin share Romeo's interests? Or had the fact that their bodies were partially digitized been discovered by the character panel being activated? No way, I haven't even added any points to him yet, he shouldn't be reacting so strongly, right?
Seeing Peter's strange expression, the old monk thought he had guessed correctly. He quickly gave Peter a smile, his old face crinkling with laughter.
"Following such a remarkable figure and embarking on another legendary journey seems like a good idea," the old cultivator thought to himself.
"Ding! Monk Martin's loyalty +5"
Haha, I didn't expect to have such an unexpected bonus.
..........
As Peter reorganized his camp's power, news of his intercepting caravans and selling medicine cheaply began to spread like wildfire throughout the Trossky territory.
Inside the Jeleyo Coachman's Inn tavern, farmers from nearby villages, bathhouse girls, barbers, shepherds, stable boys, and a group of merchants whiled away the night, chatting quietly about recent interesting events.
Two bards, George and Michael, began to tell the story of John the Big Mouth, a notorious bandit from the Crossroads, who had switched careers to sell medicine, through song.
Two bards, one fat and one thin, one wearing a red hat and the other a green one, narrated the Crossroads Incident with great suspense and humor, their conversation flowing smoothly. They concluded: "The cowardly rich man, because of his fear, ended up getting a large quantity of medicine as a bonus from the ruthless bandits. The brave Clement, however, because he resisted, had his pockets ripped off and half his goods stolen. Even God would lament the injustice!"
The people in the tavern were all talking amongst themselves, but no one agreed with them.
Someone said, "Big Mouth John isn't too bad; at least he won't rob us of everything. It's Dog Nose, who used to entrenched himself on our line, who was truly rotten to the core, leaving us no way out."
"Yeah, if I were to encounter a robber who steals from me and then gives me something even more valuable, I'd be laughing all the way out of this dream."
"The Troski Chamber of Commerce has really messed up this time. Just watch, they'll definitely take the opportunity to raise prices on necessities and make back the money they lost."
"Why were the guards arrested, but the merchants and drivers got away with it?"
"Caravans are like hens; if you keep them, they can keep laying eggs. But guards are like the fangs of hunting dogs; once they're pulled out, no one will dare to resist anymore."
Why isn't the lord's guards sending troops to wipe out these bandits?
"Why would those lords want to come out and take risks when they're hiding in their castles enjoying themselves? And are you sure you want them to come out?"
"Who can argue with that? Sending troops to suppress bandits requires additional war taxes, road maintenance fees, horse feed taxes, and a whole bunch of other taxes whose names we can't even name. When the cavalry from the castle comes out for a trip, the supplies, wine, meat, and Grosshin that our various villages and taverns hand over are more than what the bandits take."
At this point, the tavern fell silent for a moment, then a merchant sighed, "Fortunately, our Zhelyov route has been safe recently, so who cares about them?"
Yes, life is tough, but who cares?
The tavern in Takhoff village.
The cowardly rich man, Bai, broke out in a cold sweat upon hearing of the Troskii Merchant Guild's dire situation. Thankfully, he had wisely offered his money, avoiding a loss as great as the Troskii Merchant Guild's.
And these medicines....
Selling it in Brandenburg to the north could fetch at least double the price. So, there's still a profit to be made.
The Bai lord's guards were also shivering; they certainly didn't want to be captured and enslaved. The cowardly and stingy Bai lord would never pay their ransom.
The headquarters of the Troski Village Chamber of Commerce.
"Pay ransom? Don't be ridiculous. Germany has mercenaries everywhere—plenty, high-quality, and cheap. Paying to ransom them? I'd have to be crazy!"
Urban, the head manager of the Troskii Chamber of Commerce, pointed at the second-in-command, Clement, and yelled, "You will pay the price for your incompetence!"
"That big-mouthed John is just too powerful, there's nothing I can do. I will contribute to make up for part of the Chamber of Commerce's losses, but I would like to apply for sick leave next."
Clément made his stance clear.
Urban scoffed, "Trying to back down? Not yet. You need to come with me to the sheriff and tell him the details of what happened, the bandits' strength. Our guild serves our lord; we can't let this go unpunished. Revenge! We must get our revenge!"
