Chapter 54 The Seekers' Gathering
"Kaelin!" Suddenly Bai Lin heard a shout and turned around to see that it was his uncle Connelly Fudge, who was separated from him by blood by a great distance.
Fudge, wearing his signature black trench coat, a black fedora, and exquisite lambskin gloves, waved to Bai Lin from a less crowded table.
He had to go to his uncle's summons, Bai Lin said with a smile, taking small steps towards the destination. However, in Fuji's eyes, his handsome and sunny appearance was a bit annoying.
"Uncle Fuji, you're here too! I was just about to ask you when my reward payment will arrive!" Bai Lin's first words were enough to make Fuji want to vomit blood.
Summoned from the East by Fudge to England, and after only six months at Hogwarts, he had already eliminated dozens of dark wizards, most of whom died on the spot. This feat was roughly equivalent to the total number of Auror wizards in the entire office combined. Of course, there were also more than twenty Dementors that mysteriously disappeared.
Lauter's testimony was that the Dementors were destroyed by White Scale using unconventional white magic. What exactly is unconventional white magic? Will we have to create some forbidden spells for white magic in the future? Fudge and the Ministry of Magic's experts were at their wits' end.
"To make a long story short," Fudge said, frowning, "if they want you to take control of Azkaban, believe me, you must refuse!"
"Uh..." Even if Bai Lin were beaten to death, he would never have expected Fudge to say such a thing to him. Just kidding, the Dementors probably hate him to the bone. Without a ten-man Guardian God squad of experts, he would never set foot on the island of Azkaban.
"No matter what benefits they offer you, refuse them!" Fudge emphasized again.
"Let's not talk about Azkaban for now... Uncle Fudge, I know nothing about the family~ You haven't even explained the rules of the game to me." Bai Lin poured Fudge a glass of liqueur and sat down next to him.
Fudge pointed to a man standing like a javelin in the center of the square, not directing the waiters and elves, and said, "See that one?"
Bai Lin nodded. The old man had neat short hair and wore a wizard's robe with a military style.
Fudge said, "He is the deacon of this year's Presbyterian Council, a German named Nicholas, who is responsible for organizing the London meeting. The Presbyterian Council holds three meetings around the world every year, and the London meeting is the most important. It may discuss major issues that affect the entire wizarding community. For example, this time, the Presbyterian Council is very dissatisfied with the state of Azkaban over the past two years and may want to take back control of Azkaban from Moritz."
Fudge then pointed to a table at the other end of the square, where two wizards were arguing about something. One of them was an elderly black man, who should be Moritz, the current warden of Azkaban, whom Fudge had mentioned.
Fudge said, "Moritz ruled Azkaban for twelve years. According to the family tree, you should call him uncle, but he's not as kind as I am." Fudge's tone was dry and lacked any trace of his kindness; instead, he seemed a bit timid.
Bai Lin said with some surprise, "Speaking of which, shouldn't Azkaban be managed by the Ministry of Magic? From what you're saying, it sounds like a family business!"
Fudge glanced at Bai Lin and said, "Azkaban is certainly not a private island, but apart from members of the Seekers family, no one has the ability or willingness to manage it. The Seekers family often has various special talents, such as Moritz, who is immune to soul absorption because Dementors can't do anything about him."
Bai Lin suddenly realized that the old black man could be considered a natural warden.
Fudge continued, "But Moritz has made too many oversights in recent years. Antonin Dolokhov and Bellatrix Lestrange, whom you killed, should be serving time in Azkaban, yet they have escaped without anyone noticing."
The Ministry of Magic didn't dare to make prison breaks public; the Auror Office had to investigate them secretly. It wasn't until Sirius Black escaped that we realized Azkaban had lost the ability to control dangerous prisoners.
"And no one in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement is willing to take stock of Azkaban's prisoners; we don't even know how many Death Eaters are currently at large."
Bai Lin recalled the original plot: the Death Eaters' large-scale escape took place in 1996, when Fudge stepped down. Although Rufus took over, he couldn't stop the likes of Umbridge from seizing power within the Ministry of Magic, ultimately leading to Azkaban falling into Voldemort's hands. But what's happening now is completely different from the original story.
"Tell him you want to be the headmaster of Hogwarts!" Fudge whispered to Bai Lin. He had always disagreed with Dumbledore, and if Bai Lin had a few more years of experience, Fudge would like to use him to oust Dumbledore from the position of headmaster.
"You're too conservative, Uncle Fudge~" Bai Lin said noncommittally. At that moment, pleasant music rang out in the square.
A band of house-elves dressed in formal attire began playing "God Save the Queen" (the British national anthem) in the hall. As the music played, many elderly wizards appeared in phantom form and took their seats at the central dining table. After the song, most of the guests had found their seats and were waiting for the host to speak.
Bai Lin looked around and saw that many middle-aged wizards had also sat down next to Fudge. He immediately understood that even within this Seekers family, there were many factions. Fudge, as the Minister of Magic, should have held great power, but now it seemed that his influence was not that great.
When Bai Lin was reading the original book, he was very puzzled. Fudge should be the highest-ranking official in the entire magical society, but he had to do many small things personally. For example, he had to personally go to Hogwarts to supervise the execution of Buckbeak, an animal. It can be seen that he was not as glamorous as his title suggested. Later, when Fudge stepped down, he made a famous statement: "The Ministry of Magic has never been so united." It was extremely ironic.
Short-haired Nicholas shook a golden bell on the stone platform in the center of the square, and the square immediately fell silent. The elves put away their instruments, and there wasn't even the sound of clinking glasses—except for the sound of Bai Lin slurping a small bowl of mushroom soup into his mouth, as he hadn't eaten anything for most of the day.
Nicholas glanced at Bai Lin from afar. Bai Lin gestured to Nicholas with the soup bowl as if it were a wine glass, but the old deacon remained expressionless.
"Gentlemen," Nicholas said, gesturing to the elderly men at the central table, completely ignoring the guests on the periphery, but no one expressed any dissatisfaction.
"Ladies," Nicholas nodded slightly to a group of witches dressed as noblewomen at another table, then said, "the annual meeting of the Presbyterian Council in London now begins."
