Chapter 17 First Clash

Harry stared at the enormous figure, its face completely hidden under the hood. Harry followed his gaze downwards and what he saw made his stomach churn: a grayish-white arm, covered in spots and slime, protruded from under the cloak, like a corpse half-decomposed in water.

If it weren't for a month of special training, Harry would probably have been scared half to death on the spot.

Feeling the gazes of the crowd, the Dementor turned its head towards them and made a strange gurgling sound. Instantly, a bone-chilling cold swept over them, making it difficult for them to breathe. The cold seeped into their skin, chest, and heart.

Lupin gritted his teeth and growled, "Guardian Angel!" His wand immediately emitted a dazzling silver light.

The Dementor was visibly startled, taking a few steps back amidst the silver light of Lupin's Calling the Gods spell, not daring to approach, and letting out a strange, somewhat angry howl.

The strange scream reached Harry and the others' ears like knives scraping inside them; they all covered their ears. Ron and Hermione couldn't take it anymore and crouched down, but Harry gritted his teeth, raised his wand, and shouted, "Palmtops of Exile!"

Lupin was somewhat surprised that Harry knew the Calling Charm, and then he discovered that Harry had an amazing talent for this spell, the silver light on his wand was in no way inferior to his own.

Since Dementors don't seem to be able to pass through walls and objects like ghosts, but rather are more like creatures with physical forms, Bai Lin wanted to test the effects of various elemental magics.

"Blazing Flames!" Bai Lin pointed at the Dementor's robe. A spark flashed across the robe and disappeared immediately. Well, the Flame Spell was ineffective.

"Frost Arrow!" Bai Lin followed up with an Ice Spell, and the Dementor angrily waved its hand, completely absorbing the frost energy.

"Petrify them all!" Bai Lin, relying on the fact that the Dementors dared not approach in the golden light, chanted one spell after another.

"Divine Sharpness Without Shadow!" "A Barrage of Ten Thousand Bullets!"... Bai Lin used all the offensive spells he knew, shouting until his throat was dry, but he did not cause any damage to the Dementor.

"You can't hurt Dementors. They're almost immune to offensive spells. And whatever you do, don't use the three Unforgivable Spells on them, or they'll bounce back!" Lupin's face was a little pale; the Exorcism Spell was putting a strain on him.

Harry's magic was failing; his Phantasm Charm could only last for less than a minute. As the silver light on his wand grew weaker, the Phantasm Charm had lost its effect. At this point, he was still unable to summon his Patronus, but Lupin was already deeply impressed.

Lupin was in agony. He had no desire to confront the Dementors directly. Apart from knowing that the Calling the Gods spell could effectively drive them away, he was completely helpless against them. He only wanted to get rid of this Dementor out of the carriage as soon as possible. White Scale was clearly provoking the Dementors. As the silver light of Lupin's wand dimmed, the carriage went dark again.

Suddenly, everyone saw that the Dementor was emitting a sinister pale green light. Instead of bringing them light, the light made them feel even more terrifying and unsettling. On the Dementor's face, which resembled a half-rotten, dried-up corpse, two ghastly green flames lit up in its dark eye sockets.

Since the spells didn't work, let's try physical attacks. Bai Lin waved his hand, and Xue Feng pounced from behind. The wolf clan's night vision was much better than that of humans. It had been waiting behind the Dementor, ready to strike. Upon seeing Bai Lin's command, it didn't hesitate to use its long claws to grab the Dementor's back.

Bai Lin drew his longsword, leaped up, and thrust it into the Dementor's chest.

The Dementor was far more agile than it appeared. When Xuefeng's wolf claws grabbed the back of its cloak, it was as if it had grabbed a piece of paper that had no weight at all. The Dementor nimbly slid to the side, and Bailin's longsword only pierced the corner of the Dementor's clothes, without feeling like it had pierced a solid object.

The Dementor lunged at Bai Lin, but was blocked by Xue Feng, who bit down on the Dementor's neck.

The Dementor seemed to dislike Yukikaze, dodging left and right, and did not unleash its signature move—emotional absorption—on Yukikaze.

Anyone who has seen the Harry Potter movies knows that when a Dementor gets close, all the happy emotions are sucked away, leaving only sadness and frustration. That's why Harry was depressed for a long time after being sucked by a Dementor.

However, Dementors obviously cannot use their emotions on animals, which is why Brian was able to escape Azkaban successfully after turning into a large dog.

Yukikaze couldn't hurt the Dementors, and the Dementors couldn't hurt Yukikaze either. Yukikaze's enormous size blocked seven or eight tenths of the passage, making it difficult for the Dementors to get through.

Finally, taking advantage of the snow and wind blocking its path, the Dementor swiftly moved to the other side and darted over, only to be met by Bai Lin's longsword, which pierced straight towards its head.

Suddenly, Bai Lin clearly felt that the Dementor's form had faded a bit. Immediately afterward, his longsword missed its target. In that instant, the Dementor seemed to transform from a physical entity into a ghost-like phantom, completely avoiding the longsword's physical attack.

Bai Lin's sword missed its mark, causing him to lurch forward. He was met by the Dementor's disgusting face, and Bai Lin felt as if he had fallen into an ice cave; the extreme cold stiffened his limbs, rendering him immobile. Xue Feng's movements froze; his summoning spell failed, and he was forcibly recalled from the system.

"Oh no, watch out for the Dementor's kiss!" Lupin was terrified and rushed forward to try to save Bai Lin, but the Dementor raised its head and let out a sharp shriek. Bai Lin clearly saw that a part of Lupin's emotions was being sucked away by the Dementor. Lupin screamed and his body went limp. He quickly grabbed the back of the chair next to him.

"Don't hurt Professor Kaelin!" Harry jumped up from the ground and shouted, "Panic of the Exorcists!"

His wand flashed silver light again, which began to form a misty shape. But the Dementor had already grabbed Bai Lin, flew to the other end of the carriage, and slammed Bai Lin against the opposite carriage wall.

Bai Lin's face was inches from the Dementor's. The Dementor pulled down its hood, revealing a skeletal face covered in rotting flesh that gave Bai Lin a sinister smile. Where there should have been a mouth, a black hole opened and moved closer to Bai Lin—the legendary Dementor's Kiss.

The "Dementor's Kiss" is the Dementor's deadliest weapon, tantamount to slaughter. When a Dementor pulls back its hood, it drains the soul of the person it kisses. Although the person's brain and heart continue to function, and they can live without a soul, they lose all self-awareness, all memories, and everything else. There is no hope of recovery; they are merely existing—an empty shell. Once the soul is lost, it is gone forever.

"At this very moment!" Bai Lin roared with all his might. He could already feel the pain of his soul being torn apart, but at the same time, he also sensed that the Dementors had entered a different state in order to release "Dementor's Kiss." It was neither the ethereal form they were in when attacked by force, nor the physical form they were in when immune to magical attacks; it was more like their original, primal state.
