Chapter 100 The Trip to Egypt
The special investigation team from the Auror Office of the Ministry of Magic in Paris is ready to go. Most of the Aurors don't recognize Bai Lin and are wondering why Blanco brought an Easterner from the British Ministry of Magic.
Blanco didn't explain in detail, only introducing Bai Lin as a special advisor. The group of six was fully equipped—Blanco also lent Bai Lin an invisibility cloak, which Bai Lin unceremoniously stuffed into his magic cloth pocket. At Blanco's command, an Auror opened the intercontinental Floo Network and scattered a handful of Floo Powder, with the target being the French Embassy in Cairo.
Compared to Apparition, Floo Powder felt slightly better, but the teleportation distance was still quite far, so it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. Fortunately, Bai Lin quickly felt a weight on his body and adjusted his posture, landing steadily on the marble floor of the embassy.
This is a location in Cairo for the French Ministry of Magic. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary office of the embassy. There was already a staff member staring at them from inside the office with a pile of clothes.
"Thank you, Kerry~" Blanco took the clothes from the staff member and said, "Gentlemen, today we're going to pretend to be tourists and visit the pyramids. We've received intelligence that the Pyramid of Unas was once a secret base of the Spellbreakers Association."
Bai Lin followed the Aurors, changed into Muggle clothes, and put on sun-protective headscarves, looking like a group of tourists from Europe. Blanco, in particular, looked somewhat comical in his brightly colored shirt. However, when Bai Lin got to the street, he noticed that many tourists from Europe or the United States were dressed in similar flamboyant ways, and he didn't even blink.
The embassy hired a local boy to be their guide, and the group obediently boarded a dilapidated minibus and headed towards Giza on the outskirts of the city.
The slow, bumpy minibus made one of the Aurors a little carsick, but they were all top-notch wizards and managed to endure it.
The boy, named Abu, immediately recognized Blanco as the leader of the group and approached him, saying, "Sir, which pyramid would you like to visit? Would you like me to tell you about it?"
Blanco nodded. He also wanted everyone to have more information so that no one would have missed the information last night.
Abu spoke fluently and recited the text quite well. He said, "A total of 96 ancient pyramids have been discovered in Egypt, with the most in Giza and Memphis. The three most famous pyramids are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Qaura..."
Listening to young Abu's endless explanations, Bai Lin looked out at the streets of Cairo, his mind filled with memories of their last encounter. He and Catherine had snuggled together, happily sightseeing, almost forgetting they were supposed to be looking for Gringotts Bank. The scenery remained the same, but he and Catherine were now separated. He still felt like he was dreaming, as if it were just a joke Catherine had played on him. Yet, he rationally told himself that perhaps separation was actually a form of protection for Catherine. Could he survive the battle against the three Dark Lords? No one could give him the answer.
The minibus swayed and rattled for a full two hours, and the towering pyramids grew closer as they approached. At this point, Blanco said, "We won't go to the three main pyramids; let's visit the Pyramid of Unas first."
Abu was taken aback and said, "Sir, the Pyramid of Unas is not open to tourists... Believe me, the Great Pyramid of Giza is..."
Before Abu could finish speaking, an Auror cast a spell on him. Abu was startled, but quickly recovered and said, "The Pyramid of Unas is still fifteen kilometers to the south. I'll tell the driver right away!"
Blanco whispered to Bai Lin, "We haven't informed the Cairo authorities of our actions. Be careful."
Bai Lin nodded, and then the minibus traveled for another half hour before stopping in the desert.
Bai Lin looked up and saw a severely damaged pyramid standing in the desert. This place was rarely visited by tourists, and the last four or five kilometers could only be covered on foot. He didn't know how Blanco had managed to get rid of Xiao Ba and Abu, but the group of six was left alone in the desert.
Looking at the blazing sun in the sky, Bai Lin missed the ice cream in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. It would be even better if he could have a cold butterbeer. However, there was only sand here. The three pyramids of Giza in the distance reflected the setting sun and emitted a beautiful golden glow, which looked mysterious and gorgeous. Their destination, the Pyramid of Unas, looked like a hill made of gravel.
He couldn't figure out how Blanco had set up the small device, but quickly determined the direction and said, "Gentlemen, follow me! Be on guard!"
However, they encountered no obstacles and soon approached the pyramid. Around the pyramid were some standing stone pillars, carved with unknown runes, indicating the former glory of this place.
One of the Aurors took the lead and went to scout ahead. He quickly returned and said, "The front gate is completely blocked. I'm afraid we can't get in. Forcing it open could cause a landslide."
Blanco said, "There are many underground structures around here. Our intelligence says there's a passage called the Persian Shaft that leads down. Everyone, spread out and search!"
Unlike the Aurors who explored everywhere, Bai Lin walked curiously to an ancient stone pillar engraved with patterns. He wasn't an expert in ancient writing, but he had a good memory and had studied sketching for a year in order to go out for sketching. He had a deep impression of these strange symbols. He had seen the patterns engraved on the rune guns of the Spellbreakers a few times and quickly confirmed that they were exactly the same as the symbols on these stone pillars, and should come from the same writing system.
As for why these characters, when put together, could have the effect of resisting magic, Bai Lin couldn't understand it at all. It's just like many magic circles. Why can drawing a pattern on the ground or placing a few objects give you supernatural abilities? It can only be said to be a characteristic of this world. According to the Judgment Mentor, it is the energy order that the gods created for this planet when it was born.
Bai Lin was deep in thought when an Auror reported to Blanco, "Found it!"
Everyone was excited and quickly gathered together. Bai Lin went over to take a look and found that a few hundred meters south of the pyramid, in a low-lying area of gravel and rubble, there was a very ancient stone building that was inconspicuous in the surrounding ruins.
The Auror who discovered the stone house said, "I tracked the signs of human activity around here, and this place has the most. There must have been frequent human coming and going, and the entrance and shaft are wide enough to move goods."
"Great job, Elia!" Blanco patted the Auror on the shoulder.
Bai Lin followed them down the slope to the stone house. It seemed that the position of the stones had been recently changed, hiding the entrance to the stone house. Of course, this was no problem for the Aurors. They waved their wands, and the stones blocking the entrance flew to the side, revealing a small, dark door. Although it was not as spacious and grand as the main entrance of the pyramid, it was big enough to carry suitcases in and out.
Another Auror touched the stone wall and said, "It should be right. It was built in the last two hundred years. It must have been opened by modern people who discovered the underground structure."
Blanco waved his hand dismissively: "Go in!"
