Chapter 10 Both of them have scars
Harry quickly left the dining room and ran to the storage room under the stairs. In almost two minutes, he packed his suitcase, carrying a pillowcase full of textbooks and birthday presents in his arms, and Hedwig's empty birdcage in his hand.
This time, however, Uncle Vernon did not chase after them. Instead, he sat quietly at the dining table, just like Aunt Penny, watching Bai Lin.
Bai Lin elegantly took a sip of brandy, then spat it out onto the ground. "It tastes absolutely awful..."
Seeing Harry walk past Aunt Maggie, who was hanging upside down, open the door, and turn to look at him, Bai Lin smiled and tossed the wine glass into the kitchen.
As he walked out, he released the spells on Dudley and Maggie. Maggie screamed and tried to fight Bai Lin, but Uncle Vernon strode forward, grabbed her tightly, and covered her mouth—he had never been so violent towards his sister in his life. He then gave Bai Lin a fawning smile.
Bai Lin turned around and said, "I think you know how to answer when your colleagues from the Ministry of Magic come to ask, right? Well then, goodbye!" Bai Lin waved the videotape in his hand and said goodbye to this strange family.
Harry, breathing in the air of freedom and dragging his suitcase, followed behind Bai Lin and said, "Um... Professor Kaelin, I haven't formally introduced myself yet..."
Bai Lin waved his hand and said, "No need. Actually, I know you very well. Besides, we have a lot in common..." He lifted his bangs to reveal a cat-paw-shaped scar.
Harry stared in amazement at Bai Lin's scar. Although the shape was somewhat hasty, it was the first time he had seen someone else with a mark similar to his own. He had been treated as an oddball because of the mark on his forehead since he was a child, and had been mocked by his cousin Dudley at least a thousand times.
"Is this scar also from the Avada Kedavra Curse?" Harry asked cautiously.
"Well, how should I put it, do you think I'm a powerful wizard?" Bai Lin countered.
"Of course, sir, I've never seen anyone cast a spell as fast as you!" Harry said excitedly.
"Actually, I was originally much stronger than I am now, but the person who gave me the mark stripped me of my abilities, making me almost a Muggle. It took me a lot of effort to recover to my current level." Bai Lin made up a story off the cuff.
"Voldemort? Uh, I mean, the Man of Darkness!" Harry blurted out. Every wizard he had ever met—except Dumbledore—was terrified of Voldemort and dared not even mention his name.
"Actually, there are many dangerous and evil forces in this world. You are destined to fight Voldemort, and I also dislike him quite a bit! Alright, the car should be here soon!" Bai Lin stood by the roadside and shook the wand in his hand.
Just then, a large black dog, almost as tall as Harry, emerged from the shadows at the street corner and barked twice at Bai Lin.
Harry was startled; he had never seen such a fierce dog before. Compared to it, Aunt Maggie's bulldog was practically Snoopy.
"Oh! I forgot about you!" Bai Lin took out a ham wrapped with a note from his pocket, tore off the wrapping paper, and tossed it to the big black dog.
The big dog glanced at the words on the note, seemingly shocked, but quickly grabbed the note and ham in its mouth, retreated into the shadows, and disappeared.
Harry looked at the seemingly omnipotent young professor in front of him and envied his carefree manner. Although they had only known each other for less than two hours, Harry felt that he was just as trustworthy as Dumbledore.
Before they could continue their conversation, they suddenly heard a deafening "Bang!" A car headlight suddenly shone in the bright daylight. Harry quickly shielded his eyes with his hands and felt a huge vehicle rushing straight towards them. Harry screamed and almost tumbled onto the sidewalk.
However, Bai Lin caught him in time. Harry had just come to his senses when, with a creak, a pair of huge wheels and headlights stopped beside them. Harry looked closely and saw that the wheels and headlights belonged to a bright purple three-story bus. It seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, with the words "Knight Bus" written in gold letters on the windshield.
Then, a ticket seller in a purple uniform jumped off the bus and loudly announced to the two, "Welcome aboard the Knight Bus! Just extend your wand-holding hand and board, and we'll take you wherever you want to go. My name is Stansang Parker, and I'm your ticket seller today—uh, are you Mr. Kaelin from the Ministry of Magic?"
Stan didn't notice what was on Harry's forehead, but being well-informed, he had heard a lot about the Minister of Magic's nephew. He had heard that this young master was very famous in the East, with great magical power, especially his amazing monster summoning spells.
Bai Lin waved his hand and said, "Perhaps I should talk to my colleagues at the Magic Transportation Department. The Knight Bus often drives dangerously and almost scared my students."
Stan's smile vanished. He swallowed hard and said, "Please, sir, Ern didn't mean it... How about I give you a free ticket!"
Bai Lin tossed two Galleons at him and said, "Don't do it again. Give my student a cup of chocolate, and we'll go to Diagon Alley."
Stan accepted the gold coins, his face immediately lighting up with a smile. He led the two to the carriage, helping Harry arrange his luggage and setting up two of the cleanest beds for them. Then he introduced them to the driver—the old wizard Earn.
The Knight Bus started with a deafening "bang," accelerating so suddenly that Harry almost fell onto the bed. But Bai Lin reached out and gently caught him, preventing him from losing face. Harry then realized that Bai Lin was incredibly strong; he felt as light as a chick in Bai Lin's hands.
The car was going incredibly fast. Harry stared in amazement at everything in front of the car—streetlights, mailboxes, trash cans, even houses and walls—which automatically jumped aside as the car drove by, then jumped back to their original positions afterward. Although Bai Lin was also seeing this for the first time, he was currently trying to maintain his persona as a reclusive sage and wouldn't show any surprise.
After seeing off a lady from Abercrombie & Fitch, Stan leaned back in the ticket seller's seat and began reading the Daily Prophet with great interest. Harry, curious, leaned over to take a look. On the first page, a large photograph showed a haggard man with long, messy hair gripping the iron bars of a prison, roaring at the outside. But to Harry, the man seemed to be winking at him. Harry was puzzled because the man looked somewhat familiar.
"That's him!" Harry exclaimed. "He's in the Muggle news too!"
Stan chuckled softly: "Sirius Black, of course he'll be in the Muggle news!" But he glanced at Bai Lin, not daring to mock Harry, and handed him the newspaper instead.
Harry opened the first page, which read: Black is still at large. Below were details of Black's crimes and a speech by Minister for Magic Fudge. Harry gasped; Black had killed thirteen people with a single spell twelve years ago.
Harry stared at Sirius Black's gloomy eyes and pale skin, feeling that he looked like a terrifying vampire.
