Revelation of the Way of Heaven
Chapter 21 Searching for Clues
He pushed open the church doors again and walked into the sanctuary with Han Kexin.
The main hall was pitch black, and when his headlamp shone inside, it was filled with swirling dust and cobwebs.
The main hall is flanked by white stone pillars, beneath which are rows of wooden chairs and tables, all covered in dust.
He looked up again and saw a domed archway, three or four meters high, painted with various patterns, but it had become mottled and worn from the erosion of time.
"How are we going to find it?" he asked Han Kexin in a low voice, not daring to even speak loudly in this eerie place.
"Of course, we'll search house by house," Han Kexin said casually.
"What? Search house by house? That sounds so unreliable. Do you think those treasures would be hidden in ordinary rooms?" he said speechlessly.
"Of course we're not looking for treasure," Han Kexin said as she walked forward.
He followed closely behind her, asking in bewilderment, "Why are we here if we're not looking for treasure?"
"Do you think the treasure is hidden in these rooms?" Han Kexin asked instead of answering.
"No, definitely not." If the treasure were kept in the room, would they even get a share?
"That settles it then. What we're looking for are clues, clues about where the treasure is hidden," Han Kexin said coldly.
"Oh, I see," Qin Xiaochuan said with a sudden realization, but was it really possible to find clues in this church that had been abandoned for many years?
He expressed his doubts, but he didn't say anything, fearing that saying it would dampen Han Kexin's enthusiasm.
"Oh, right, there's one more thing," Han Kexin suddenly said, "Because there are so many rooms here, we need to split up and search."
"What?" he exclaimed incredulously, then, realizing the silence around him, he lowered his voice, "You're not letting me come with you?"
"No need, I can manage on my own," Han Kexin said nonchalantly.
Qin Xiaochuan didn't expect her to say such a thing. Of course he knew she could manage on her own, but the key issue was that he couldn't do it alone.
"But I...I..." Just as he was about to say he couldn't, Han Kexin suddenly asked, "You're a grown man, you wouldn't say you can't, would you?"
Since the beautiful woman had already said that, he had no choice but to swallow the rest of his words and say, "Of course I can."
"Alright, you can look around these rooms. I'll go check the clock tower at the back," Han Kexin said immediately, and then walked towards the back of the temple.
Watching her figure gradually disappear into the distance, Qin Xiaochuan felt a sudden wave of fear wash over him. He smiled bitterly and said, "She really did just abandon me like that."
He looked ahead and, illuminated by his headlamp, saw a large cross hanging above the temple's lectern, covered in cobwebs. Facing it, he silently murmured, "God help me, Amen."
There are two rooms on each side of the podium. Since we'll be searching them all anyway, we'll just go one by one.
He opened the first room, and as the light shone into the room, a dark shadow suddenly flashed past his eyes, making him shudder and his heart pound. When he looked closely, he saw it was a mouse.
Qin Xiaochuan swallowed hard to calm his racing heart, then looked around the room. It was a puzzle room, completely empty except for a chair.
There were definitely no clues here, so he went to the next room, which was where the priest listened to confessions, and there was only one chair there.
He went to another room, a dressing room. Although there were cabinets and drawers, they were all open. Inside, besides rats and insects, there were only a few worn-out clothes and some rusty utensils.
There were no clues here, so he had no choice but to go into the last room, which was a stairwell with stairs going up and down, all of which were dark and looked really eerie and terrifying.
He instinctively felt that it should be safer upstairs, so he decided to go upstairs to check first.
The upstairs area should be the pastor's living quarters, with a study and a bedroom.
He thought he wouldn't find anything significant even in the study and bedroom, but he was wrong. When he entered the bedroom, he found it was furnished with complete furniture.
At first, he was very surprised and thought it was impossible. How could something from the 1940s be preserved to this day? But after he looked at it carefully, he realized that he was overthinking it.
The things in this room don't look like they're from the last century at all. Looking at the broken TV, the old telephone, and other modern high-tech products, these are clearly from this century.
It's obvious that people lived here a few years ago.
Who exactly lives here?
Han Kexin's information clearly shows that this place has been abandoned for many years, so why would anyone still live here?
Filled with doubt, he began searching for clues in the room. The room was in a mess; it seemed that after no one had lived there, a thief had broken in, as the entire room had been ransacked.
After searching every corner of the room, he finally found a diary, some bills and the like, and the rest were useless household items that provided no useful information.
He first opened the diary, quickly browsed through a few pages, and then understood who had lived there before.
The previous owner of this room was Mo Qi (his signature is on the bill), a Christian pastor. His family did not originally live here; they should have lived nearby, but he often came here to preside over some events.
Although the church is now abandoned, many people in the vicinity still believe in Christianity, and this place has become their usual gathering place.
After serving as a pastor here for two years, Mo Qi made up his mind to renovate the Church of St. Desmond. So he raised funds from all over the place and finally raised almost all the funds for the renovation ten years ago.
The diary ended there, but his curiosity only grew stronger.
Clearly, the church has not been repaired. What happened back then? Mo Qiming had already raised enough funds, so why wasn't it repaired in the end? Did something unexpected happen?
Qin Xiaochuan suddenly remembered the information Han Kexin had shown him in the car, which said that in modern times someone wanted to rebuild the Church of Saint Dexin, but had to give up because of the ghost story. Could it be that the place was really haunted?
Thinking of this, he couldn't help but feel a chill. He remembered that when he first came in, Han Kexin had told him that there were monsters in the church. Was she not joking? He quickly looked around, but apart from making the place even more messy, there was nothing wrong with the surroundings.
It would be better to leave this place as soon as possible. After thinking for a moment, he put the diary in his pocket, walked out of the bedroom, and went to the study next door.
The study was just as messy as the bedroom, with a desk, a chair, and a bookshelf inside.
There weren't many books on the shelf, only some books about Christianity, including a Bible. Because it was well-preserved, the Bible looked relatively new. He opened the Bible to the title page, and in the center of the title page was a line of pen writing that read: "When the eternal beam of light passes through still time and space, the six-pointed star will shine again, and the gates of darkness will be opened."
The handwriting was very faded, indicating it had been written a long time ago. Qin Xiaochuan examined the sentence carefully but had no idea what it was saying.
He flipped through the rest of the book but found nothing special, so he closed it and looked at other parts of the book. He even emptied the trash can to examine everything. Finally, he found a crumpled piece of paper in the trash can, which Mo Qi must have thrown away carelessly.
With the mindset of not letting any possibility slip by, he still opened the piece of paper, which read:
When the eternal light passes through the stillness of time and space, the six-pointed star will shine again, and the gate to the night will be opened.
