Sun Changyou was in bed, cold, hungry, and in pain, desperately hoping that someone would come to his home to pour him some hot water and feed him a hot meal.
As a result, the first thing his daughter-in-law said when she stepped through the door was not asking if he was in pain, but instead giving him this disgusted look. His fat face, which was already covered with dry yellow mud, instantly turned as black as the bottom of a pot.
"Can't you even speak like a human being?!"
With his arm in a sling, Sun Changyou slammed his left hand against the bed and roared in a hoarse, broken voice:
"I've been turned into this dead dog, and you come in here and the first thing you care about is whether I stink! Whose wife are you anyway?!"
Seeing his half-dead state yet still shouting and yelling, the woman's previously anxious heart finally settled back into her stomach.
She wasn't going to tolerate his bad temper at all. She threw her coat and bag on the bedside table, strode to the bed, and, while pulling off her scarf, used the dim light to scan his sling-on right wrist and bruised shoulder and back:
"Alright! Still have the energy to yell at me? Looks like the King of Hell hasn't taken you yet! Are your bones broken?"
"Broken my ass!" Sun Changyou turned his head away irritably. "The bones aren't broken!"
"What did the doctor say?"
"Sprained arm! Twisted tendon! If you had come any later, your arm would have been frozen solid by the cold wind!"
Upon hearing that the bones weren't broken, the woman's tense face visibly relaxed. She patted her chest and said, "Be grateful it's not broken! When that unlucky kid Xiao Zhao ran home to find me, he was crying and wailing, talking incoherently, saying 'Brother Sun was crippled.' I thought you'd been stabbed in the arm with a cleaver! I was so scared I ran here without even putting on my shoes!"
While grumbling about the unreliable young man, she deftly unzipped her handbag and pulled out a military green thermos, an enamel mug with a large red "double happiness" character printed on it, and a slightly worn white towel.
She unscrewed the thermos stopper, and hot water poured into the enamel mug with a "whoosh," sending up a large cloud of scalding white steam.
The woman left the water to cool, then grabbed a towel, soaked it in the hot water, wrung it out until it was half-dry, and continued her questioning without looking up:
"You went out early this morning, didn't you, with your car and public funds, to that damn commune repair shop to negotiate an exclusive deal for large equipment? How come you haven't brought the goods back, but instead ended up in the hospital?"
"Who the hell was the blind fool who beat you up like this?!"
Sun Changyou's face twitched violently twice.
He was seething with resentment and anger, and he wanted to vent all the suffering he had endured right then and there.
But just as the words reached his throat, what suddenly flashed through his mind was Zhao Shanhe's cold, heavy eyes as he stood by the mud pit at the repair shop, looking down at him.
A deathly silence fell over the ward for several seconds. Sun Changyou's entire body tensed uncontrollably, and finally, he could only grit his teeth and forcefully squeeze out three words:
"Zhao Shanhe".
The woman was bending down, wringing out a towel.
Upon hearing this name, his hands visibly paused for a moment.
She raised her head, her eyebrows slightly furrowed:
"Zhao Shanhe?"
He paused, then subconsciously added:
"That Zhao Shanhe from Kaoshantun?"
Sun Changyou's originally gloomy and resentful fat face suddenly froze little by little.
He didn't speak.
He just stared intently at his wife.
The woman was puzzled by his gaze, and stood there holding the hot towel, frozen in mid-air for a long time.
Why are you staring at me like that?
Sun Changyou's lips twitched, and he suddenly let out a cold laugh:
"It's nothing."
"I just think you have a good memory."
The woman was taken aback at first.
He immediately sensed the sarcasm in his words and his face fell.
"Sun Changyou, don't you dare give me that 'trouble' thing!"
"What's so strange about me remembering someone's name from our class back then? Besides, Zhao Shanhe was a good student back then, and the teachers talked about him all the time. Then such a big thing happened in his family, and he just dropped out of school. Who in the class didn't know that?"
"I think it's more than just remembering!"
Sun Changyou gave a sarcastic snort, a cold smile playing on his lips, which aggravated the bruise on his cheek, making his eyelids twitch with pain, yet he couldn't suppress the lingering jealousy in his mouth:
"Back in school, he sat not far behind you, we saw each other all the time! Then his dad had an accident while carrying heavy timber in the mountains, it was a devastating blow to his family. The homeroom teacher asked the class officers to lead the way to offer condolences. Out of so many people in the class, why did the teacher specifically choose you to go with them to Kaoshantun? You were gone all day, and didn't come back until it was completely dark. Did you really think I was blind? What were you up to?!"
The woman's chest heaved with anger, and she slammed the hot towel in her hand into the enamel basin with a "thud," splashing scalding water all over the bedside table.
"Sun Changyou, have you lost your mind?!"
She pointed at Sun Changyou's chubby face, covered in dried yellow mud, her thin eyebrows bristling, and began to curse:
"That's all ancient history, twenty years ago! And you're lying in a hospital bed bringing this up with me?! That was back in junior high! I was only fourteen or fifteen, the class's Youth League secretary! My father died, and we were so poor we couldn't even afford a coffin. The teacher sent me with a few pounds of cornmeal, two packs of noodles, and a letter of condolence that the class had pooled together. If I didn't go, who would?! Did you, that good-for-nothing who spends all day gambling on cigarette tags and fighting crickets, have to go?!"
The woman grew increasingly agitated, taking a half-step forward with her hands on her hips, nearly spitting onto Sun Changyou's nose:
"You still remember something from twenty years ago when we were just kids! If I really had something going on with him, would I have stayed away from him for so many years?!"
"That's hard to say!"
Sun Changyou, his thick, short neck stiff, stared intently at the woman's face with eyes like poisoned needles.
"Because you, Sun Guifen, have been a snob and a snobbish person since childhood, always looking down on the poor and greedy, and you're better at manipulating things than anyone else!"
Sun Changyou got more and more excited as he spoke, his fat face, covered in dried mud and swollen and bluish, almost twisted into a pretzel:
"Back when Zhao Shanhe's family was still doing well, he always got first place in his class. The teachers praised him all the time. He was also tall and strong. You, on the other hand, used your position as a class monitor as an excuse to linger near his desk. You practically peeked at him!"
"When his father was killed while carrying timber in the mountains, the sky fell on his family. Four orphans and a widow had to feed him, a mere teenager. They were so poor they didn't even have rice to cook, and he couldn't even finish junior high school, so he had to go back to the village to beg for food! After you came back from Kaoshan Village, seeing that his life was completely hopeless, you immediately turned your back on him and avoided him like the plague!"
"In the end, isn't it just that you think he's poor?!"
Sun Changyou's lips curled into a sinister smile, his eyes scanning the woman's face with a chilling gaze.
"Later, you saw that my family was well-off. My dad worked at the grain station and could get you grain supplies from the city, and he could get you a job at the supply and marketing cooperative wearing polyester. That's why you switched sides and followed me!"
"What's going on now?"
Sun Changyou patted the iron bed board with his uninjured left hand, the sound so sharp it seemed to pierce one's lungs:
"Today I suddenly heard that Zhao Shanhe is still alive, that he didn't starve to death in Kaoshantun, that he's even tougher than before and still dares to kill, does that make your heart, which has been dormant for twenty years, start itching again?!"
“Pah!”
Sun Changyou's chubby face, covered in dried yellow mud, was slapped so hard that it turned sharply toward the window, nearly dislocating his right hand which was hanging in a sling.
He was completely stunned, his ears were ringing, his lips were half open, and he couldn't come to his senses.
Sun Guifen's right hand was still frozen in mid-air, her chest heaving violently, her eyes were already red with anger, and her fingertips were trembling slightly from excessive force.
Only her heavy, trembling breathing remained in the ward.
"Sun Changyou".
"Fuck your mother!"
…………
(I bet some of you are already guessing what kind of rubbish I'm about to do next, haha.)
Actually, no, I just suddenly felt that I could use Sun Guifen's storyline to delve deeper into Zhao Shanhe's experiences during his school years and after his family's misfortune, to make the character more complete, and also to lay the groundwork for the later plot.
As for those melodramatic and disgusting plots, there definitely won't be any. Don't worry about that; I myself can't stand that kind of thing.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to write more about Zhao Shanhe's past, that's all.
