Chapter 124: Keep it with you; I'll check it regularly from now on.
"Ah Nian," came Zhou Xiulan's voice.
"mom."
"You... how come you suddenly started your own company?"
Chen Bainian had already prepared his answer in his mind and replied calmly, "Mom, when I was resting at home before, I made a game with my friends and achieved some results."
Later, I thought that instead of working for a company, I should start my own business. That way, I would have more freedom, so I went out with a friend.
In his reply to his parents, Chen Bainian slightly adjusted the timeline to ease their worries.
"A-Nian, is your company stable? Do you have enough money?" His father, Chen Anguo, also came over, his tone worried. "I heard that Wang Quan's family in the village borrowed a lot of money from the bank last year for that factory—"
"That's enough, Dad, don't worry," Chen Bainian reassured him calmly. "Making games is different from them running factories. I don't need to buy land or expensive machines. Besides, my first game and this one I just made sold well, and there will be a lot of income coming in."
At this point, Chen Bainian paused, then continued, "Mom, send me your bank account details later, and I'll transfer some money to you."
"A-Nian, why are you transferring money to us?" Zhou Xiulan quickly asked. "We have our own money. Keep yours for yourself. You need to buy a house and a car in Lin'an, which will cost a lot of money."
"Mom, don't worry, I've saved some for myself," Chen Bainian explained. "These few days are May Day, so there should be quite a few people going back to celebrate. There will also be more people in the village who know that I run a company, so there will definitely be people coming to our house asking all sorts of questions."
"That's true," Zhou Xiulan replied.
"And in a few days, I have an interview that should be broadcast on the provincial TV station," Chen Bainian continued. "On May 4th Youth Day, there's a special feature on young entrepreneurs. Although my appearance on camera won't be long, if someone in the village sees it, even more people might come to my door."
"Interview? What interview? And it's going to be broadcast on the provincial TV station?" Zhou Xiulan was a little confused.
"Brother, is this a youth-focused interview about the May Fourth Movement?" The younger Chen Jing, who was more sensitive to this topic, asked through the speakerphone, "Is it airing on the provincial channel?"
"That's right," Chen Bainian affirmed.
"Mom, I know that. I'll explain it to you later. Just remember that my brother is going to be on the provincial TV station's Channel 1." Chen Jing gave a simple explanation from the side.
"So, Mom," Chen Bainian said smoothly, "when someone comes to visit, please use this money to buy some cigarettes, alcohol, and tea to entertain them. Don't be stingy, buy what you need."
Zhou Xiulan finally understood: "Okay, Mom understands. We'll take care of anyone who comes."
After speaking, she paused, then asked softly, "Ah Nian, where do you live now? Is it still the same neighborhood as before?"
"Yes, it's still Mingchun Garden," Chen Bainian replied.
"Next door, or that neighbor?" Zhou Xiulan continued to ask.
Chen Bainian paused for a moment.
He knew what his mother wanted to ask.
"Yes, it's her again."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, then Zhou Xiulan's tone brightened: "Was that her who answered the phone just now?"
"Um."
"What was her name again? Tingting?" Zhou Xiulan tried hard to recall what her daughter had just said. "Jingjing said she told her to call her Sister Tingting."
"Jiang Yiting," Chen Bainian replied patiently. "Yi means 'content and carefree,' and Ting is the character with the water radical and the character 'ding'."
"Jiang Yiting—" Zhou Xiulan repeated, "It's a nice name."
Then he asked, "What does she do for a living?"
"A game streamer is also running her own business. It's similar to TV hosts; she used to be a TV host," Chen Bainian explained, trying to make it understandable to his parents.
"Oh, the host—" Zhou Xiulan clearly only heard the second half of the explanation, and her tone showed a hint of satisfaction. She then continued to ask, "So, you two—"
Before Zhou Xiulan could finish speaking, Chen Anguo quickly interrupted her: "Alright, stop asking so many questions. Let the children handle their own affairs. They're all grown up now and know what they're doing."
"I was just asking," Zhou Xiulan said softly, then turned to Chen Bainian and said, "A-Nian, Mom isn't pressuring you, I just feel that if someone can look after you while you're out there, I'll feel more at ease."
Hearing his mother's nagging, Chen Bainian's heart softened immediately, and he replied softly, "I know, Mom."
"Okay, then take good care of yourself, eat on time, and don't stay up late." In the end, Zhou Xiulan habitually reminded him again, "As long as you have enough money to get by, don't overwork yourself."
"it is good."
"Then I'll hang up? You can go ahead and get busy."
"Okay, goodbye Mom and Dad."
A dial tone came from the other end of the phone.
Chen Bainian put down his phone and let out a soft breath.
After calming himself down a bit, he picked up his phone and, sure enough, saw a message from Jiang Yiting: Breakfast is ready. Come over and eat after you finish your call.
Upon seeing the message, he unconsciously revealed a slight smile and replied: Okay, coming right away.
When I opened the door to room 1202, Jiang Yiting was sitting at the dining table, scrolling through her phone and eating breakfast.
"Little brother, here's your breakfast." Jiang Yiting pointed to the table opposite hers. "I saw a new beef noodle shop opened across the street, so I bought some to try. Yours is medium spicy with vinegar and scallions."
"How does it taste?" Chen Bainian asked as he sat down at the table.
"It's alright," Jiang Yiting commented, "but it's a bit spicy. There are a lot of locals around here, so I don't know if this kind of small shop can stay open for long."
Chen Bainian nodded, then looked at the high ponytail that was sticking up because she was eating noodles with her head down. He raised his hand, revealing the hair tie: "Your hair tie."
Jiang Yiting finished slurping the last mouthful of noodles, looked up, and there were still some red oil droplets on the corners of her mouth.
She glanced at the hair tie on his wrist and nodded in satisfaction: "It's fine, keep wearing it. I can check it whenever I want."
Chen Bainian smiled and nodded: "Okay."
After taking a few bites, Chen Bainian looked at Jiang Yiting across from him, who had finished her noodles and was idly scrolling through her phone while waiting for him, and casually asked, "My mom asked about you earlier."
"What are you asking me?" Jiang Yiting looked away from her phone and at Chen Bainian.
"I'll ask you your name and what you do for a living," Chen Bainian said casually as he ate.
"So what was your answer?" Jiang Yiting asked with a smile, somewhat curious.
