Chapter 170 Teachers and Teachers

"Teacher, what happened to your arm?"

Old Zhong also noticed the unnaturalness in Teacher Luo's arm.

"It's nothing, it's just an old problem," Teacher Luo said dismissively.

Because of the long hours spent writing on the blackboard with their arms raised, teachers inevitably develop some health problems in their later years; this can be considered an occupational hazard for teachers.

"Come on, I'll take you to my house." Teacher Luo led the two of them into the stairwell.

Although it is an old neighborhood, the sanitation and environment are kept extremely well.

Although the walls of the stairwell were somewhat mottled, they were swept clean, and the motion-activated lights turned on immediately, making the room neither dark nor cramped, which shows that it is maintained very carefully on a daily basis.

The old building doesn't have an elevator, so you have to climb the stairs step by step.

While going upstairs, Shen Qingzhou took the opportunity to ask for details: "Teacher Luo, could you tell me more about your family's situation?"

"I've lived here for many years and never thought there was anything wrong with the house before. But starting a few years ago, something started to go wrong. First, dead cockroaches and rats would often appear. We thought it was because the house was unsanitary, so we hired someone to clean it thoroughly, but obviously it didn't help."

"Then the closet doors in the house would often be opened, the things inside would be rummaged through, and clothes would be scattered all over the floor. After installing surveillance cameras, we found that we did all of this ourselves, but we had no recollection of it at all —"

"If it were just me, I might suspect that I have a mental problem, but since both my partner and I are experiencing this, something is not right. Moreover, this situation has stopped after we moved out —"

"Someone told me there was something dirty in the house, but I don't really believe it. We've lived here for decades, and everything's fine. How could there suddenly be something dirty?"

"Even if there is, there should be a first-come, first-served rule, right? Why are you occupying my room? I'm just a teacher who has spent my whole life dealing with students. Although I haven't cultivated many talents, I haven't done anything particularly heinous either."

Teacher Luo spoke at length and in great detail. By the time they went upstairs, Shen Qingzhou had a general understanding of the situation.

Judging from his words, there really might be a ghost in this house.

However, they were not some ferocious ghosts. They simply used a brief mental resonance to make Teacher Luo and his lover do some incomprehensible things. This childish behavior was more like that of a woman or a child.

As for dead cockroaches and dead rats, that's even simpler, because they are of low life level and weak spirit, making them easy targets for ghosts.

"This is it."

Teacher Luo stopped in front of the iron-framed security door of apartment 502 on the fifth floor and took a bunch of jingling keys off his belt.

He first opened the iron gate, inside which was another solid wood door. A handwritten Spring Festival couplet was pasted on the door. Although the ink had faded a bit, it was well preserved and there wasn't a speck of dust on the edges.

The fact that even the front door is so clean shows that Teacher Luo wasn't lying; the couple is extremely particular about hygiene.

Teacher Luo pushed open the door and invited the two of them in, saying, "Come in and let's talk."

But Shen Qingzhou didn't go in; instead, she turned to look at room 501 across the hall.

These old-style apartment buildings are basically two apartments per floor, with doors facing each other. Teacher Luo's apartment is 502, and the apartment across from it is 501. The two apartments are very close, only five or six steps apart.

The house across the street had clearly been vacant for a long time; the doorknob was covered with a thick layer of dust, and there was dust in the cracks of the door. It was obvious that no one had lived there for a long time.

So Shen Qingzhou asked, "What's the situation across the hall? Is no one home?"

"Oh, that's Teacher Fang's house. Since Teacher Fang passed away, his son and daughter-in-law have rarely come back," Teacher Luo said.

"Can you tell me the specifics?" Shen Qingzhou asked.

Teacher Luo wasn't stupid either. Upon hearing this, she immediately realized what he meant, and her expression changed slightly: "You mean—the problem lies with the other side?"

"No, I was just asking casually," Shen Qingzhou said.

But these words clearly did not dispel Teacher Luo's doubts. He stared at the tightly closed door across the hall, a complex expression on his face. He sighed and began to speak slowly.

"This Teacher Fang is from the same school as me. She teaches math, and she's known for her explosive temper." Teacher Luo lowered her voice, with a hint of sigh.

"He was a great teacher, but he had a very strong temper. He would beat or scold his students. Back then, the discipline was more lenient, and he often had conflicts with parents because of corporal punishment. A few years ago, I ran into a student on the street who had been beaten by him before. The student had held a grudge for more than ten years and immediately blocked him and beat him up. It even ended up at the police station."

"It was probably one night five years ago. He was coming home when he was involved in a car accident. A car was speeding and hit and killed a young man crossing the road. Teacher Fang couldn't dodge in time and was also seriously injured. In the end, he was paralyzed from the waist down and could never stand up again."

"Later, the driver who caused the accident was caught, but he was diagnosed with a terminal illness and was all alone. He couldn't afford to pay compensation at all. After Teacher Fang became paralyzed, he could only stay at home and be taken care of by his son and daughter-in-law. It's pitiful. His wife passed away early, and he only has this one son."

Upon hearing this, Shen Qingzhou and Lao Zhong immediately exchanged a glance and instantly realized something was amiss. What a coincidence! Clearly, the driver had been deliberately arranged by someone, a method they were all too familiar with.

But it's clear that the other party wasn't targeting Teacher Fang; he was simply unlucky and suffered an undeserved misfortune.

Just then, Teacher Luo sighed deeply, her tone tinged with helplessness: "But his son and daughter-in-law aren't exactly good to him either."

"However, there's a backstory to this. Teacher Fang's temper is like that of a student; he would beat and scold his son from a young age, so their relationship has always been strained. After he became bedridden, his temper became even more erratic. He would curse and swear at home every day, and there was never a moment of peace at home."

"After less than two years, Teacher Fang left. His son wasn't close to him to begin with, and soon after, he took his wife to work in another city. The house has been empty ever since, more than three years now."

After speaking, Teacher Luo looked at Shen Qingzhou, her eyes filled with trepidation: "Mr. Shen, do you think—this matter is really related to the other side?"

Shen Qingzhou didn't respond to that, but simply said, "Let's go inside and take a look."

"Okay, okay, then come in quickly."

Teacher Luo quickly responded, turned to the side, opened the shoe cabinet next to her, took out two pairs of clean disposable slippers, and handed them to the two of them.

Shen Qingzhou bent down to change into slippers. The wooden floor under her feet, though worn by years, was polished to a shine, without a single stain.

He glanced around the room; not only the floor but even the windows were spotless. The afternoon sun shone through, making the room exceptionally bright.

"Teacher Luo, you don't live here anymore, so why do you still come over every week to clean?" Shen Qingzhou asked.

"I come to clean it up almost every week." Teacher Luo sighed, her tone full of melancholy and regret. "If we leave it unattended, this house will fall into disrepair in no time."

This house is the first home that they truly own.

They live here, their children grow up here, so naturally they have feelings for this place.

"Then I'll take a look around first." Shen Qingzhou stopped talking and turned to look around, his gaze first falling on the ceramic Guanyin statue on the table.
